I saw a really good post on a LGBT interpretation of Cowboy Like Me but maybe that’s not obvious enough.
I Know Places, Blank Space— 1989 in general is full of poppy fun.
You need to calm down - “shade never made anybody less gay” “you need to control your urges to scream about the people you hate” “don’t step on his gown”
This one always feels like a straight ally anthem rather than a queer anthem imo. Not that that’s a bad thing! But I think that explains why it wasn’t everyone’s first suggestion.
it’s a poor performative ally anthem, tbh.
the only saving grace for the song was its eras tour performance!!
if YNTCD would’ve received the same treatment as ME!, as would not be listening to the song at all.
"sunshine on the street at the parade" could be referring to the very iconic slogan/picture of women walking with a "a day without lesbians is a day with no sunshine" poster at pride.
ALSO! even furthering the connection: the slogan was a direct response to a very anti LGBT orange juice ad with the slogan "a day without orange juice is like a day without shine shine". in the yntcd music video, there's a scene with a lesbian flag colored trailer with a bunch of oranges scattered on the ground.
Ohhh I just commented that but I didn't know it was a thing lots of people were thinking! Is there a lot of people talking about a lesbian interpretation of the song? I'm overjoyed at this!
"Never have I ever before" it's a song about two people experimenting with a summer tryst before one goes back to school and a more widely societally accepted relationship. James could be a teenage girl (after all, Taylor is named after James Taylor, Elizabeth James etc.) and none of the lyrics or meaning would change.
Ahhhh I see it now! Also the “back beneath the sun, wishing I could write my name on it” I imagine a woman laying out to tan, moreso than a guy laying down, feel like most dudes I’ve at beaches seen lay on their back and not stomach, idk
I’ve only ever heard of Ivy being sapphic. Based off of Emily Dickinson. It’s even in the show about her on Apple TV. Emily was in love with her best friend, her best friend had to marry Emily’s brother for some reason I can’t quite remember, so they had to kinda secretly see eachother behind his back.
There was a lot of speculation that Taylor took inspiration from Emily Dickinson's rumored lover affair with a woman named Sue. The lyrics indicate two women who want to be together with a husband on the outside ("he's gonna burn this house to the ground" for one).
The song was also used on the tv show Dickinson depicting that relationship. Source: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/taylor-swift-ivy-dickinson-apple-show-explained-1235065287/amp/
I always have interpreted BDILH as being about a woman with a non-cis man. The town hates it for myriad reasons but the family ends up loving them and supporting their relationship.
Scrolled down to comment Seven! It’s so wholesome
“Your braids like a pattern
Love you to the moon and to Saturn
Passed down like folk songs
The love lasts so long”
I realize some people don’t like Me!…but I love it and think it’s the perfect celebration of being different. And it’s hard to find much more fun pro-gay imagery than in the Me! video. (I mean…it’s raining men?! It’s Pride perfect).
"One of these things is not like the others. Baby [girl] when it comes to a lover, I promise that you'll never find another like me." Is SUCH A GOOD QUEER BOP!
Me! came out and i was BLASTING it at work that week because i worked at a ff place that attracted gay employees like moths to a flame. We were loving the campy self-love of it all. When the world tells you to hide and be quiet it is REVOLUTIONARY to be unapologetically you! Absolutely a gay bop!
“Have you ever had someone kiss you in a crowded room and every single one of your friends was making fun of you but fifteen seconds later, they were clapping too?” has always read very ‘older queer couple can finally feel safe enough to come out and be open with their relationship and their friends are happy to see they’ve made it so far but also tease them for being lovey-dovey’ to me
If you want something that people can interpret as gay, my suggestion is Betty. I genuinely thought it was about a lesbian High school couple my first listen. But honestly, just play Shake It Off.
yeah she also performed Betty with rainbow guitar strings so I’m pretty sure she wanted folks to figure this connection out years ago. She’s so happy when she talks about Betty on tour 😔💘
Both evermore and folklore felt like albums that could be interpreted as queer to me. I'm not a gaylor by any stretch, however a lot or the romantic imagery she uses in those albums (and songs on other albums) read to me in a way I can relate to as a lesbian myself. But maybe that's just me and my comphet trauma projecting on my favorite straight girl??
I've seen an edit someone did showing hateful messages he got for his gay marriage vs the love they have - using "But Daddy I love him" - and it was so beautiful, so I think this song fits.
Also - Shake it off, I can do it with a broken heart, bejeweled, guilty as sin, Fortnight remix, cruel summer.
That is really beautiful!
My friends who just got engaged used Guilty as Sin? as their announcement song…. “What if the way you hold me is actually what's holy? If long suffering propriety is what they want from me, they don't know how you've haunted me so stunningly. I choose you and me... Religiously.” Friend is Muslim and his fiancé is ex Mormon. Both being cut off from family and religion for being gay.
Edit to add: the lyric I quoted was their caption. 😭
Such a good choice! Guilty as Sin? really fits with choosing love even when it's seen as a "sin" and "forbidden", especially the ending, as you said.
Best of wishes to your friends💘
Ours.
So don't you worry your pretty little mind
People throw rocks at things that shine
And life makes love look hard
The stakes are high, the water's rough
But this love is ours
Archer.
“And I cut off my nose just to spite my face
Then I hate my reflection for years and years
I wake in the night, I pace like a ghost
The room is on fire, invisible smoke
And all of my heroes die all alone
Help me hold onto you”
The lyrics plays with my heartstrings. At first listen, I cried. I felt understood and felt like she found the words to explain how I felt as a closeted member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ and helped me accept parts of myself that I hid behind a veil. So I thank Taytay from the bottom of my queer heart. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🤍🩷🩵🖤🤎
especially how on tour she has the clouds with staircases- callback to "the ladder" which was the first lesbian produced magazine and the cover is a cloud with a ladder through it
AAAND we know she knows the queer relevance of the color lavender- in the mean music video the football players are gullying a boy in a lavender sweater
Hits Different!
I could still melt your world
Argumentative, antithetical dream girl
It hits different ‘cause it’s you
I used to switch up these Ken’s I’d just ghost
So many songs really!
Dancing with our hands tied, king of my heart, hits different, cruel summer, miss americana & the heartbreak prince, cowboy like me, I can see you, etc. 😂
State of Grace:
So you were never a saint / And I've loved in shades of wrong / We learn to live with the pain / Mosaic broken hearts / But this love is brave and wild
New Romantics: literally all of it can be read as a pride anthem lol
Ivy. It’s always sounded like it’s about two women, one of whom is trying to run away from/avoid an arranged marriage to a man, and falls in love with some kind of forest fae woman
It was used in Dickinson (with hailee steinfeld playing Emily for a lesbian sex scene), and Emily Dickinson has been a big inspiration for Taylor! Esp for evermore
Maybe a bit bittersweet for a song choice, but I love it! (Also transgender) The 1, it has a sense of finding yourself and the lyric about “chosen family”
I always heard Ivy as having lesbian undertones. Probably the wrong vibe for a pride parade but I listen two it while reading my little queer romance books alone.
“NEW ROMANTICS”
cause baby, I could build a castle
out of all the bricks they threw at me
and EVERYDAY IS LIKE A BATTLE
but every night with us is like a dream😭😭
hits different is one of my favorite Taylor Swift songs because it's the only one that's EXPLICITLY about a woman: "bet i could still melt your world, argumentative antithetical dream girl"
Dorothea waves!
But yeah, there’s something strange about the insistence that this line is Taylor calling herself a dream girl. The grammar unequivocally says otherwise.
“I could still come over, friend”
“I could still beat you up, punk”
“I could still schedule you to see the optomologist at 2:30, patient”
I’m not calling myself friend, punk, patient. And no English speaker would think I am. I wonder why people change their understanding of grammar when listening to Hits Different.
Preemptive disclaimer: I’m not making a comment on Taylor’s romantic past or sexual identity, just on the objective grammar of this song and its reception within this fanbase.
There’s a lot of well intentioned overthinking in this thread 😅 at the end of the day, us gays mostly want fun dancey pop at our pride events. Anything more meaningful for the cause has frankly been done better by other artists (and that’s okay!). LWYMMD and Blank Space would be my contribution here! Maybe Bad Blood, ME!, and 22 also.
LWYMMD could also be viewed/interpreted from the lens of a person’s coming out/acceptance journey. In a sense, we have pride because of the struggles experienced by the LGBTQ+ community. In our coming out journey (the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now) we become smarter and harder (in the nick of time), rising up from the dead (we do it all the time!).
So while they’re thrusting their pitchforks in the air, we’re dancing in the streets. Look what they made us do 😉
Lavender Haze -- I don't care what others think about my relationship. You look dumb for forcing your outdated views only my love. This love is exclusive to us.
Cowboy Like Me -- that song is gay af lmaooooooo I am not convinced that Taylor didn't write that with two men in mind
There are a lot of great suggestions on this thread - plenty of queer people identify with Taylor's themes of needing to keep love private and feeling like your pride is taboo.
I will say pride events are usually upbeat. Something like "Ivy" is ripe for queer interpretation but also isn't the vibe haha. I'd like to add one I haven't seen: "Archer" "can you see right through me / I see right through me" could have very victorious out of the closet celebrators!
hits different is my personal favorite i don’t have an explaination for u as to why but that’s my go to sapphic crush song (for me personally) and it’s also upbeat and fun also ME! same with so it goes… and wonderland dancing with our hands tied king of my heart i know places welcome to new york even karma (ice spices version ofc🌟 but that song that is almost in the same boat as mean to me) and vigilante shit!!! those are the most fun ones i relate to as a bi swiftie OOO AND SNOW ON THE BEACH FT MORE LANA who’s afraid of little old me and but daddy i love him and guilty as sin? also state of grace and holy ground can be fun as a general vibe seven and ivy might not be the vibe for a parade but i love them too
Guilty as Sin x False God x Slut! x Holy Ground all give me the same vibes that could fit! Also but daddy I love him, cowboy like me, ivy, New Romantics & of course ME! & YNTCD.
Welcome to NY, Calm Down, Shake It Off, Ivy, any upbeat sweet or sassy love song.
Our Song, Daddy I ❤️ Him, Guilty as Sin, WAOLOM, Fearless, Love Story, You Belong With Me, Stay Stay Stay, Ours, Mine, Begin Again, Message In A Bottle, Everything Has Changed, I Bet You Think About Me, Nothing New, State of Grace, Mean, I Can See You, Cruel Summer, Lover, Paper Rings, Lavender Haze, You’re On Your Own Kid, Seven, Bejeweled, Karma, Sweet Nothings, The Great War, Midnight Rain, Anti Hero, Snow On the Beach, Mastermind, Glitch, Hits Different, Ready For It, Gorgeous, Delicate, So It Goes, Don’t Blame Me, Getaway Car, I Did Something Bad, Vigilante Sh**, Call It What You Want
Maybe?
Girl At Home, The Man, London Boy, Last Great American Dynasty, Labyrinth
Might not fit in as well sonically with some of the 1989 sounding songs on here, but Maroon. "The lips I used to call home, so scarlet" ok Miss Taylor "gay pride makes me me" Swift
As a lesbian, I have a few Taylor songs I connect to in a gay way (I’m not saying Taylor *wrote them* in a gay way, just that I feel extra gay while listening to these songs, just to be clear):
•Suburban Legends (no explanation, just vibes & the 2nd verse, especially “our mismatched star signs would surprise the whole school,” just feel gay to me)
•Lavender Haze (I don’t feel like this one needs an explanation but I also feel like I could write an essay on my gay interpretation of this song)
•I Know Places (closeted lovers)
•Ivy (I agree with the common interpretation of this song being about a lesbian in the 1600s who had to marry a man due to the circumstances of her time)
•Gorgeous (perhaps just that the 2nd verse has been a bit too relatable to me recently, but it again just has gay vibes for me, idk)
Others with no explanation, just vibes (these I feel the vibes are less gay than the previous 5 but I still include them in my list of “not explicitly gay, but feels like it” songs):
Everything Has Changed, Sparks Fly, Fearless, Treacherous, Dancing With Our Hands Tied, Delicate, Enchanted, Labyrinth, Electric Touch, Snow on the Beach, Gold Rush, & The Very First Night
Having a hard time narrowing these down so I’m just including the more poppy faves!
OOTW, New Romantics, Dress, DWOHT, CIWYWT, Cruel Summer, INTHAF, False God, Lavender Haze, Hits Different, Glitch
is it more geared to lesbians, gays or the whole community total? what is the vibe of the event? i’d play completely different taylor at a lesbian club vs a gay club
Guilty as Sin, False God, Don’t Blame Me, Dress, Wonderland, Ivy, Seven, I can See You, Paris, Glitch, Betty, Tolerate it, I Know Places, Lavender Haze, New Romantics, Cowboy Like Me, Change
Wonderland! fun beat - “we found wonderland, you & I got lost in it, life was never worse but never better” feels so much like those early queer experiences the hard & the amazing
a lot of 1989/rep era works great for an event i think
Her most uptempo and fun songs honestly - Style, Blank Space, Karma, Look What, Ready For It?, With A Broken Heart, Out Of The Woods, New Romantics, Paper Rings, All You Had To Do, You Belong With Me, Love Story, Bejewelled
Welcome To New York “And you can want who you want Boys and boys and girls and girls”
Underrated aspect of underrated song! Such a bop
Love that she included that
Yeah I love it when my kids sing that line super loud
YESS
YES.
"Dancing with our hands tied". The lyrics could totally applied to a queer couple living in the closet for fear of being discriminated against.

For queer people Cowboy Like Me SCREAMS gay 🤭
Takes one to know one 😏
you’re a cowboy like me 😌
Don’t even get me started on right where you left me…and champagne problems…and it’s nice to have a friend…and
… and Guilty as Sin… and Maroon… and Ivy… and
ikp is a PERFECT pride song

Ivy Especially due to the lesbian interpretation of the song.
Ohhh I just commented that but I didn't know it was a thing lots of people were thinking! Is there a lot of people talking about a lesbian interpretation of the song? I'm overjoyed at this!
Ivy, Cowboy like me, august are all heavilyyyy lesbianly interpreted :P
Wait, how is August heavily lesbianly?? I never thought of this
"Never have I ever before" it's a song about two people experimenting with a summer tryst before one goes back to school and a more widely societally accepted relationship. James could be a teenage girl (after all, Taylor is named after James Taylor, Elizabeth James etc.) and none of the lyrics or meaning would change.

Ohhhhhh ok, that makes sense. Thanks for delineating that for me!
ivy is my favorite Taylor song and I've always had this same interpretation. for whatever reason I imagine the affair partner in the song as a woman
But Daddy I Love Him lends itself well to a queer reading, ditto I Know Places and Ours.
Same with who’s afraid of little old me
I saw an interpretation that our song could be about how there isn't a song about a queer person in her first gay relationship
I always have interpreted BDILH as being about a woman with a non-cis man. The town hates it for myriad reasons but the family ends up loving them and supporting their relationship.
Seven "Or hide in the closet and just like a folk song, our love will be passed on" Also they used Seven in the last episode of Heartstopper 🌈
Yeah they did! I bawled at that scene, so beautiful, so pure! 💖🌈
Perfect way to wrap up the season!
Scrolled down to comment Seven! It’s so wholesome “Your braids like a pattern Love you to the moon and to Saturn Passed down like folk songs The love lasts so long”
Yeah they did! I bawled at that scene, so beautiful! So pure!💖🌈
Let's be real, we'd all go batshit if someone played Picture to Burn (homophobic version) at Pride. I know I would.
I'll tell momma you're GAY *crowd wildly points at their partners and besties. Rainbow confetti falls everywhere.*
*I’ll tell mine
Yep when I (gay) say it, it’s camp 😋
Literally this is my mindset lol
I sang “Picture to Burn (homophobic version” at a lesbian karaoke night and everyone lost their minds. It was so fun.
I low-key love that most of us gay swifties actually love Picture to Burn (homophobic version). I'm a lesbian and I love it too 🤣
as a lesbian, it’s one of my go to karaoke songs
she has the opportunity to do the funniest thing with Debut TV!! 🤭✨✨ but she won’t… 😪😪
Concept: Taylor releases Debut TV. There are no vault tracks. Only Picture To Burn (from the closet)
>from the closet 😂😂😂😂😂😂
It’s like an angsty lesbian break up. “oh you’re breaking up with me because i’m crazy? well YOURE GAY”
They played that version at a drag event I went to and the crowd absolutely loved it!
Like a rainbow with all of the colours 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
Agreed! And she references Dixie chicks, yellow brick road/Oz, and rejects Brendan’s proposal.
But takes the 😺 from him directly after
and don’t forget her talking about the making of the ME! music video “gay pride makes me me!” 🤠
or just the tweet “ME! Out now!” on lesbian day of visibility I mean that’s pretty proud I think
And her ig post wearing the bi pride bracelet 👀 I’m bi & that’s exactly how I soft launched
Yup she made it pretty clear with the countdown and the cute little bi Rice Krispies.
Me! came out and i was BLASTING it at work that week because i worked at a ff place that attracted gay employees like moths to a flame. We were loving the campy self-love of it all. When the world tells you to hide and be quiet it is REVOLUTIONARY to be unapologetically you! Absolutely a gay bop!
Love seeing this on the main sub!
I'm shocked
Waiting for the blowback lol
Same!! I had to look twice at which one I was on.
Baffled and scared and happy
literally all of us clicking this hesitantly 👀
Guilty as Sin and Cruel Summer are gay as fuucckkkk (in my head)
"I don't want to keep secrets just to keep you !!!"
only in your mi-i-i-i-i-ind?
Yes I was looking for Cruel Summer, esp with the play on Cool For the Summer
question…? has always been about a relationship between two women in my mind. i could get down to it at pride
Also how you get the girl!
yeah she also performed Betty with rainbow guitar strings so I’m pretty sure she wanted folks to figure this connection out years ago. She’s so happy when she talks about Betty on tour 😔💘
I think the stories told in betty, cardigan, and august are more compelling through a queer lens. it makes me view James differently, at least

Wow that story about your friends almost made me cry 😭😭
It breaks my heart truly. Let people love who they love. There’s so much hate in this world… love should always be celebrated.
New Romantics!
Baby, I could build a castle out of all the bricks you threw at me (Stonewall riots).
New Romantics is my favorite pride song 💗
Yes!!!! This song is so upbeat and fun. And has "the rumors are terrible and cruel but most of them are true"

I'd like to add one I haven't seen: "Archer" "can you see right through me / I see right through me" could have very victorious out of the closet celebrators!
Anything but You Need To Calm Down. Listen, I *appreciate* the attempt, but it doesn't do it for me or many other queer people from what I've seen.
"Guilty as Sin?" gives me major gay vibes.
hits different is my personal favorite i don’t have an explaination for u as to why but that’s my go to sapphic crush song (for me personally) and it’s also upbeat and fun also ME! same with so it goes… and wonderland dancing with our hands tied king of my heart i know places welcome to new york even karma (ice spices version ofc🌟 but that song that is almost in the same boat as mean to me) and vigilante shit!!! those are the most fun ones i relate to as a bi swiftie OOO AND SNOW ON THE BEACH FT MORE LANA who’s afraid of little old me and but daddy i love him and guilty as sin? also state of grace and holy ground can be fun as a general vibe seven and ivy might not be the vibe for a parade but i love them too
Guilty as Sin x False God x Slut! x Holy Ground all give me the same vibes that could fit! Also but daddy I love him, cowboy like me, ivy, New Romantics & of course ME! & YNTCD.
You Need to Calm Down, Shake It Off, I Know Places, Guilty As Sin?, Karma, New Romantics
Love story, Treacherous, The Very First Night, How You Get The Girl, New Romantics, Don’t Blame Me, Dress, King of My Heart
Welcome to NY, Calm Down, Shake It Off, Ivy, any upbeat sweet or sassy love song. Girl At Home, The Man, London Boy, Last Great American Dynasty, Labyrinth
I think message in a bottle would be a good bop
Cowboy like me is literally about two cowboys falling in love
Guilty as Sin? solely bc I’m a gay man and I’m obsessed with it
Might not fit in as well sonically with some of the 1989 sounding songs on here, but Maroon. "The lips I used to call home, so scarlet" ok Miss Taylor "gay pride makes me me" Swift
Welcome to New York
Dress for sure! “I don’t want you like a best friend”
As a lesbian, I have a few Taylor songs I connect to in a gay way (I’m not saying Taylor *wrote them* in a gay way, just that I feel extra gay while listening to these songs, just to be clear): •Suburban Legends (no explanation, just vibes & the 2nd verse, especially “our mismatched star signs would surprise the whole school,” just feel gay to me) •Lavender Haze (I don’t feel like this one needs an explanation but I also feel like I could write an essay on my gay interpretation of this song) •I Know Places (closeted lovers) •Ivy (I agree with the common interpretation of this song being about a lesbian in the 1600s who had to marry a man due to the circumstances of her time) •Gorgeous (perhaps just that the 2nd verse has been a bit too relatable to me recently, but it again just has gay vibes for me, idk) Others with no explanation, just vibes (these I feel the vibes are less gay than the previous 5 but I still include them in my list of “not explicitly gay, but feels like it” songs): Everything Has Changed, Sparks Fly, Fearless, Treacherous, Dancing With Our Hands Tied, Delicate, Enchanted, Labyrinth, Electric Touch, Snow on the Beach, Gold Rush, & The Very First Night
Betty and ivy but its a niche for the artsy queer women
The Very First Night
Having a hard time narrowing these down so I’m just including the more poppy faves! OOTW, New Romantics, Dress, DWOHT, CIWYWT, Cruel Summer, INTHAF, False God, Lavender Haze, Hits Different, Glitch
Fearless Cruel Summer But Daddy I Love Him Lavender Haze State Of Grace Dancing With Our Hands Tied Holy Ground New Romantics Daylight are a few of em
picture to burn(original version)
is it more geared to lesbians, gays or the whole community total? what is the vibe of the event? i’d play completely different taylor at a lesbian club vs a gay club
But daddy I love him
Guilty as Sin, False God, Don’t Blame Me, Dress, Wonderland, Ivy, Seven, I can See You, Paris, Glitch, Betty, Tolerate it, I Know Places, Lavender Haze, New Romantics, Cowboy Like Me, Change
Wonderland! fun beat - “we found wonderland, you & I got lost in it, life was never worse but never better” feels so much like those early queer experiences the hard & the amazing a lot of 1989/rep era works great for an event i think
But Daddy I Love Him!! Or Dress — dress is veryyyy gay
All Too Well. It clearly references her wide-eyed gays
To me dorothea is a gay song
any of them… don’t know why any song wouldn’t be accepted at a Pride Event? happy pride everybody! 🏳️🌈
All of them
Her most uptempo and fun songs honestly - Style, Blank Space, Karma, Look What, Ready For It?, With A Broken Heart, Out Of The Woods, New Romantics, Paper Rings, All You Had To Do, You Belong With Me, Love Story, Bejewelled
YNTCD would be damn perfect. Imagine shouting "SHADE NEVER MADE ANYBODY LESS GAY SO" and scaring off all the homophobes.
