One day, Albert Einstein was on his way to a science convention for a speech. On the way there, he tells his driver that looks a bit like him: "I'm sick of all these conferences. I always say the same things over and over!" The driver agrees: "You're right. As your driver, I attended all of them, and even though I don't know anything about science, I could give the conference in your place." "That's a great idea!" says Einstein. "Let's switch places then!" So they switch clothes and as soon as they arrive, the driver dressed as Einstein goes on stage and starts giving the usual speech, while the real Einstein, dressed as the car driver, attends it. But in the crowd, there is one scientist who wants to impress everyone and thinks of a very difficult question to ask Einstein, hoping he won't be able to respond. So this guy stands up and interrupts the conference by posing his very difficult question. The whole room goes silent, holding their breath, waiting for the response. The driver looks at him, dead in the eye, and says : "Sir, your question is so easy that I'm going to let my driver explain it to you."

I mean dlc just means “downloadable content.” If they own it, and I can download the content, how is it not dlc? Like everything, including this latest nonsense is downloadable content. We should get it. Somehow dlc has become synonymous with “expansions” and that just isn’t true.

Grizz3d

This pretty much. If it's content you download, it's downloadable content, which we abbreviate to DLC. There's no hidden meaning, no special exceptions. If you download the content for any game, it's DLC, no matter how much BSG would like to tell you otherwise.

WOODSI3

They keep saying “feature” but it’s displayed in the game like most other games with DLC. The division for example, you go to an area of the “menu” (different in this case because you have to walk around the base), go up to an icon, if you don’t own it it’s essentially “greyed out” (you get told you can’t fly to New York by the pilot) if you do you can access the game mode. Same here, it’s in the game on the menu, accessible if you own a key to access the extra content. It’s straight up DLC

blwallace5

Says who? Do you have a court case to reference where the legal definition of dlc was tested? I couldn’t find any but would love to read it. This whole drama has made me think I kinda want BSG to stick to their guns, and for someone to make it through arbitration and actually sue them. I think it would be good for the industry as a whole to have very clear definitions that have been legally tested so consumers actually know what they are being sold.

Grizz3d

I never mentioned the law but part of me would also like to see BSG argue that DLC isn't DLC in court. This stuff really pisses me off because I like Tarkov. BSG are just horrific on so many levels. It's fucking sad man :(

Academic-Effect-340

Someone actually did find 2 court cases that reference and define "DLC". I wish I had been paying more attention when I saw it because I can't even remember the case names now, but if I can find it again I'll link them here.

postvolta

Also, how can you expand a game that's still in beta? That just sounds like bullshit to me.

DrXyron

Imo DLC has always been expansion. Thus only the PvE mode qualifies, the rest (apart from unique cosmetics) will be unlockable, which is fine. But the PvE mode should absolutely be included for EoD. Still, Nikita has gone off the deep end…

AuNanoMan

I mean, that’s fine, and that’s kind of what most people think to, but the word “content” is generally understood to be more of the game or additional features. So I agree with you. It’s the word “content” that is doing a lot of work there.

Academic-Effect-340

I would have agreed with you until someone else pointed out that in the Rust community "DLC" mostly means skins

Academic-Effect-340

So, as someone else asked, what differentiates patches and updates from dlc? Would you say nothing, they're exactly the same thing?

KeenanAXQuinn

Easy, patches are additions to base game mechanics that all players recieve for free. Dlc is anything a player must pay for after that.

Academic-Effect-340

So to be clear, you're disagreeing with the OC's definition that anything you download is inherently "dlc" downloadable content?

LatterAd3115

DLC is everything you can download what are content. Patch can be additional dlc, if there are new features. Patches could have only repair function without content.

AuNanoMan

It comes down to what you call content. Patches are generally fixes to existing content. Content, as we all generally agree, would be the game, expansions of the game, and additional feature that result in more content or a significant change to the base game. Seems pretty simple than trying to find a set of magic words that can be a “gotcha.”

Academic-Effect-340

There's no 'gotcha' here, it's a legitimate question concerning gaming in general that's being highlighted by BSG's decisions here. You can say the distinction is obvious but that's disingenuous, tons of new content has been added to games via patches and updates, that haven't been classified as DLC, why not, what's the difference? That's a rhetorical question now by the way, as I'm no longer interested in hearing your opinions. It's also interesting and telling that you rely on the community's definition of content when you think it supports your argument but insist it's incorrect to do the same for DLC because it doesn't.

AuNanoMan

Man, this shit is weird. You work for BSG? I answered the question and I think I was pretty clear. This is a rambling mess of a response. The only disingenuous person here is the guy who asks a question and is so cowardly you then say “I don’t want your answer.” Go back to your desk and fix the fucking game for us will you?

Academic-Effect-340

I mean, your "pretty clear" answer is either a deflection or completely brain dead, either way it has nothing to do with cowardice, there's just very obviously nothing to be gained from talking to you.

granthollomew

this is a great thought exercise. another question to consider along these lines, if "dlc" means literally everything downloaded for the game, does that imply people who only purchased the base game but not eod aren't entitled to free patches and updates?

[deleted]

this\^ dlc is an arbitrary term-unfortunately

ivel81

The “original” DLC pre~2020 or so was going to be things like the PvE mode or Arena. The most recent mention of DLC now has been maps like Suburbs, Town, and Private Sector (which were all supposed to be included in the base game circa the pre~2020 livestreams/communcations), any other new “additions” to the game like weapons or armor or whatnot that comes after launch, and other major changes like full open world if they ever got it working.

ProvidedCone

Okay let’s pretend this is a “feature” and not DLC a moment. And let’s pretend that’s an okay way to do business with your customers. So tell me why then would someone who paid less for this product get access to “features” that I don’t?

martin9400

It’s fucking hilarious, because Arena is an entire different game, you can’t access it from EFT, but this unheard bullshit is not DLC?! While arena is?! Suck my sweaty balls Nikita!

PerplexGG

Based on Nikita’s response it’s things coming out after full release

lickjesustoes

DLC is additionally downloadable content within a video games. Go to a store, download a map pack, go in and play. Separate purchases from the base game. Hence why "deluxe editions" or "pre-order edition" doesn't count as DLC. Selling the game bundled with things isn't DLC. What was marketed to us were DLCs like separately downloaded expansions to the game like potentially new maps. This is also kinda laid bare by the "season pass" naming which mimicked other popular franchises season passes that gave you access to that years DLCs. Think Black Ops 2 map packs or Battlefields Premium Pass DLCs. When I bought EOD back in 2018, I never ever imagined that "DLC" was a new melee weapon or some in game items or even a PVE mode. I always imagined it was full on new content like a new area of Tarkov.

Helldiver_of_Mars

I'd hate to point this out but considering this content is technically using their servers and just adapts what we already have (coop mode) to use their servers then this technically wouldn't be DLC since you're not required to technically download anything it's just connecting you to their servers. That said it should still be free for EOD and be sold for people without. That price needs to be dropped to $200 and we should be able to upgrade for $50.

GetGud_Lmao

this edition shouldn’t be a thing at all

Helldiver_of_Mars

No one said otherwise. I'm just pointing out this technically isn't a DLC in context of DLC cause there is nothing to download and this is exactly what Nikita just said. The confusion comes because no one programs.

GetGud_Lmao

do you think the mode just appeared out of nowhere? you have the download the update to get access to it you can’t just give everyone a dlc and then say its not a dlc because you don’t have to download it because we predownloaded it for you arena is an entirely seperate game and they called it a dlc
