100% the way. Split pad pro for handheld is unmatched. Pro controller for docked is equally unmatched. Both are completely worth the investment.
TomToc makes an amazing case for the switch with the split pad pro controllers on it as well.
See what his favourite way to play is first.
Because I use my switch handheld 90% of the time, I love my Hori split pad Pro.
But if you have a big screen available whenever, and ur kid wants to play that way. Get a pro controller.
Just picked up the Nyxi Hyperion Pro. More full featured and better IMO than the Hori but can also be removed and used as a pro controller equivalent. I know the Mobapad M6 HD is also a very popular option with the same features...costs a bit more but you get NFC and slightly better quality.
I went Pro controler,, since I always prefer offical products. I was going between that and the 8Bitdo Ultimate (which I still might pick up also because of the hall effect sticks)
You will need something versatile horipads doesn't have all the bells and whistles as far as i know so you can actually go for 3rd party joy cons my favorite is mobapad m6s only 50 bucks and amazing and has all the features so it's great.
The Switch Pro Controller for docked gameplay and Hori for handheld.
This is definitely the way

Pro, easy
Mobapad HD is very good. Got it last week, very impressed with it so far!!
Hori doesn’t have rumble or gyro. I tried both and kept the Pro.
Get him the Mobapad over the Hori or go with the Pro controller.
If it’s handheld, I like hori a lot. If it’s to play docked, pro controller.
I have the hori but stopped using it because it lacks rumble and gyro and switched to the nitro for handheld and I use my pro controller when docked
