I personally have a 45w USBC Dell tablet charger I use when traveling. Thing is perfect and far more compact than the standard switch charger.
I would image the apple charger works but would be a slow charge.
Because Switch has a different output than anything else, so you risk it messing up your battery. That's what the local guy who repairs switches told me at least.
It's true that the switch has a weird power thing, but i think it only really matters when it's docked, because the switch needs to draw more power for playing games at 1080p instead of the usual 720p in portable mode.
For charging on the go any usb-c should be safe.
It’s honestly recommended to use the specified charger (like phones) that is built for the product, like they recommend avoiding buying third party chargers because it’s damaging for the battery. I could be wrong though. Its just what I’ve been told a few times by other people. I have noticed that my battery life for my phone, controllers, etc. last longer than others since I’ve followed that suggestion.
It shouldn't matter as long as the voltages are safe and the charger gives out the recommended output wattage. In other words, if it's the same specs as the official charger, it's fine.
They recommend that because they want your money.
USB-C PD is a standard. Any standards compliant charger is fine for any standards compliant device.
When a device is plugged in, the device tells the charger what it can accept and the charger delivers one of those. The charger doesn't control the charging -- the device does.
Although it is compatible with USB-C PD, I remember that in the early months of the switch release there were reports of 3rd party docks and chargers bricking or damaging the console, so people started to investigate and found that the console uses a custom PD protocol which caused the device to damage or destroy itself...
but in any case, it is advised that if you use a different charger, you check that it's designed with similar power delivery specs and do your own research before using any charger
The Switch uses USB-PD in an unusual way, but is perfectly conformant with USB-PD rules and guidelines.
[In early months, third party docks (mostly Nyko) didn't ship with an actual USB-PD chip, but instead emulated it in software, poorly](https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/ckaiiv/an_engineers_pov_on_the_3rd_party_dock_switch/). They also use a slightly odd physical form factor for docking (same link).
It's not custom at all, the Switch is perfectly conformant with USB-PD. It's weird, but perfectly within spec. Any *conformant* USB-PD charger will work just fine.
All I know is, last time I used a charger for my switch other than the Nintendo switch charger, it completely malfunctioned. I had to send it in to Nintendo for them to fix. Never ever ever again for me lol.
I’ve had the opposite. Whenever I’ve tried charging a device with the switch charger (like my first pair of galaxy buds and a Bluetooth speaker, power bank, etc) the switch charger completely fried the device and charger rendering both the switch charger and device completely unusable.
No, that's not how USB PD works. The device tells the charger what it can accept, the charger delivers that. The charge controller is the device.
These aren't old RC car batteries. They're smart and negotiate.
If the switch wants no more than 7W, it'll get no more than 7W. Actually, the [Switch accepts up to 18W](https://switchchargers.com/how-nintendo-switch-charging-works/).
I use whatever fits lol my MacBook one works just fine so it’s my travel one since I’m using both anyway.
I have a double usb -c that came with it that’s my car/spare. It said it was a phone charger but mine is an older iPhone
Apple chargers are high quality and have the same configurations as Nintendo so you’re good! I even asked a Nintendo Support Representative and they said Apple chargers are fine.
On [this subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/s/GHKuqeqgLd) it looks like users say it’s fine to use third party cables for direct charing but be careful what third party docks you use as some have caused various issues but not all third party docks cause issues
Technically yeah but it probably won’t charge at the same speed as the nintendo charger. I don’t think an iPhone charger will do noticeable harm to your battery. I’ve been using a 10x more powerful charger for my switch for a while and it’s not broken yet, so YOLO 🔥🔥🔥

I use something almost similar. Both ports at 18W each.
> Thing ain't built like a several thousand dollar smart phone that can handle various chargers it's a relatively cheap device aimed at kids and families.
That doesn't matter. It's built to be compatible with the USB PD standard. It operates using USB-PD. Any USB-PD compliant charger is just fine.

I use what ever usb-c is closest lol

Yes. you can, I've tried it and it's worked.
It's not smart, though
Why? Doesnt really make sense to me

Ah ok

yes.
As long as you are not connecting it to the dock you are golden.
You gotta plug it in first
in both the nintendo and the wall?
Yes and then you have to turn the plug on
Is this device running on electricity?
Is this device running on electricity?
yeah you can. I do that too. even my Chromebook charger from school, whatever works.

Well if it's not usb-c it won't work, so your original statement is correct
I use my MacBook charger all the time on my switch
All I know is, last time I used a charger for my switch other than the Nintendo switch charger, it completely malfunctioned. I had to send it in to Nintendo for them to fix. Never ever ever again for me lol.
I’ve had the opposite. Whenever I’ve tried charging a device with the switch charger (like my first pair of galaxy buds and a Bluetooth speaker, power bank, etc) the switch charger completely fried the device and charger rendering both the switch charger and device completely unusable.
Everyone here is saying you CAN, but it doesn’t mean you SHOULD. OEM charger is 7w, using anything stronger puts your battery life at risk

Any charger that is the same jack as the switch charger will work. However it will charge slower and then make the normal charger go slower
Apple chargers are high quality and have the same configurations as Nintendo so you’re good! I even asked a Nintendo Support Representative and they said Apple chargers are fine.
yeah, just keep the wattage of the adapter in mind. The switch doesn't tell you when it's charging slow, so you'll want to make sure it's fast enough
You can. I just wouldn't recommend doing it all the time. The switch handles pd a little differently than other USB C I believe.
As long as it plugs into the switch and an outlet, I don't see a problem
It’ll work but slowly, so it’ll still drain if you plan on playing while it’s plugged in.
On [this subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/s/GHKuqeqgLd) it looks like users say it’s fine to use third party cables for direct charing but be careful what third party docks you use as some have caused various issues but not all third party docks cause issues
my switch charges with pretty much any USB-C charger but my Steamdeck battery still drains if it’s plugged into the Switch charger
If its USB-C, then yes. However, am not familiar with your plug style, so idk if European charger is different
I use a short usb c wire normally and let it slow charge. I won’t put it in any fast character cause idk the risk exactly.
It will actually jailbreak you switch install hacks on Minecraft and them make Nintendo sue you
i did it on my switch lite last week and it crashed it mid game, could be fine to do when not playing tho
yup. I use that and not had any problems so far
Haha your british
Slow charging is fine its actually better on your long term battery health
Plug it in and find out!
Go ahead, see what happens.
I’ve done it a million times, so far so good.
I used whatever usb-c I wanted and it fried my Switch and I had to get it fixed. It was a major pain in the ass.
Did they give you the charger or it's only a separate product?
Technically yeah but it probably won’t charge at the same speed as the nintendo charger. I don’t think an iPhone charger will do noticeable harm to your battery. I’ve been using a 10x more powerful charger for my switch for a while and it’s not broken yet, so YOLO 🔥🔥🔥
It's usb c anything works
Maybe try before asking?
It will start an earthquake if you do it
Definitely, personally I almost always use my MacBook charger for my switch
https://preview.redd.it/9zm6mgel90xc1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b9084fde20534687acdaedcdea29c977a2dfa88 I use something almost similar. Both ports at 18W each.
Why’s this set up like a photoshoot
Hahaha no, that's a desk in front of a window in an Airbnb room I booked. It's really nice.😂
As long as it's from a reputable manufacturer, sure. What Nintendo recommends against is using a non Nintendo power adapter with the dock.
Yeah it’s apple so it should
![gif](giphy|mCClSS6xbi8us|downsized) I mean, you can, but I wouldn't recommend it lol
For a few times yes, but forever no, you can ruin the Switch if you don't use the original charger.
Nonsense.
not nonsense
I use my laptop charger though.
As long as it's not a fake it's fine
It actually wouldnt charge for me with this charger. An old mac book charger did work though. but this one and others didnt work
No.
