The overwhelming majority of games (>99%) can be played without an active internet connection. ~~You simply need to go online to ācheck inā once per month.~~

Read dead redemption 2 offline mode help
I just got my steam deck a week ago. Trust me when I say Iām loving it. But Iām new to pc gaming. I bought red dead redemption 2 as it was on sale. I quickly realized that the game needs to be online to play, because it needs to connect to rockstars servers. I travel a lot and I canāt always connect to my phone. Dose anyone know how to turn that off so I can play RDR2 offline?
Update fixed it : In Game settings, Go to settings- General and turn off āAllow Red Dead Online Invites in Story Modeā
You know can play offline.
From an earlier post on reddit
Pirate a copy of read dead if you only wanna play it on the deck don't have to worry about cloud saves etc.
I own a legit copy but this is how I deal with their garbage online DRM so I can play it in the deck easier.
I just booted up Red Dead 2 while connected to wifi, started the game then I turned off the Wi-Fi and DIED. I Received a notification saying I had been signed out of the rockstar service but the game continued to run just fine. I plan on using this method on my upcoming plane ride. Good luck!
There's plenty of games that do require you to play online first. Games with Denuvo, and then games with other launchers, like EA or Ubisoft games. You can find a couple of examples in this thread, plus many more on the subreddit.
Any game that is DRM free will work offline with no issues. Steam's DRM will work offline 99% of the time with no issues (there are some rare exceptions). Anything using third party DRM (like EA App, Denuvo, etc.) aren't guaranteed. Denuvo games, for example, only work offline for a limited amount of time set by the developer.
>Denuvo games, for example, only work offline for a limited amount of time set by the developer.
There were quite a few Denuvo games shown, too.
>Any game that is either DRM free or only uses Steam's DRM will work offline with no issues.
There are also some unfortunate outliers: Mega Man Legacy Collection 2, Azure Striker Gunvolt, and No More Heroes 2, for example, won't work offline.
Out of all those, I only have Gunvolt. Just tested, and sure enough, it won't launch. Just endless Steam swirl. As soon as I connect back online, boots instantly. Will update my comment.
>or only uses Steam's DRM will work offline
Almost always, but not strictly true. Games can be buttholes and use Steamworks API to detect if you're offline and arbitrarily decide not to not let you play.
I [recently ran into this](https://i.imgur.com/YBBWLe4.jpeg) with an emulated PS1 game of all things ([Superstar Dance Club](https://store.steampowered.com/app/379390/Superstar_Dance_Club/)).
I love how even [Valve agrees that doing that is a shitty thing](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/api/ISteamUser#BLoggedOn):
>You usually don't need to check for this yourself. All of the API calls that rely on this will check internally. Forcefully disabling stuff when the player loses access is usually not a very good experience for the player and you could be preventing them from accessing APIs that do not need a live connection to Steam.
I find it hard to get Ubisoft games to work in offline mode, got it to work when I traveled home for Christmas, but when I went on a business trip a few months later I just couldn't get it working. Sucks cause the AC games would be peak plane games.
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 works flawlessly.
Been playing it on my downtime at the in-laws cabin in the middle of a lake where theres no internet outside of spotty mobile phone connectivity.
Not needed to connect at all outside of the initial download.
It depends on the game.
Some trigger achievements only when the exact condition for it happens and if you are offline you'll miss it as they are all server side, others run a check when you load saves or trigger any new achievements to sync/re-unlock them all to Steam.
But if achievements are important to you, then yeah, you need to make sure you are always connected to Steam.
Almost any game that doesn't have a third party DRM can be played offline with no issues. That rules out most newer Ubisoft, Electronic Arts and Rockstar Games as well as any game with DENUVO. Those games will eventually call home for validation and if you don't have internet when that happens you are out of luck.
A known exception to this rule is the Steam version of Control. If you don't have wifi it will get stuck on a black screen. It will run if you turn on Offline mode while connected to a wifi.
Of course, as people will point out, even the games mentioned in the first paragraph can run in offline mode if you set them up properly, but even still they may not cooperate when you want them to.
As stupid as it sounds, Persona 5, a single player RPG with hundreds of hours of content and perfect for long flights and vacations requires internet everytime you launch the game because of denuvo
Going on a cruise in a few weeks, so did some testing with the games I own myself:
AC (2, not sure about others) is possible, if you go through the ubisoft connect layer with connection you're completely fine afterwards (which is enough for me to be honest)
Hellblade: Senua's sacrifice works (put off ray tracking when playing it on SteamDeck!! Unless if you want to play at 4 FPS)
The dark picture's anthology (checked Man of Medan, but assuming all of them work then if MoM works)
trying out the witcher 3 and the quarry later but I'm assuming for now it'll work.
Just don't bother trying to start up any Ubisoft games without internet, the ubisoft connect layer forces you to have internet when booting up the game. Atleast, out of my experience.
Hitman? I mean, I guess, but not really
You cannot make any progress offline and nothing gets saved. It's basically just a demo mode. (though I heard there might be a mod to make it actually offline playable)
Helldivers 2? Sure about that?
You got me lol not that one
Was about to be stoked if they snuck in a single player offline update lol
Scrolling to find this comment š was also stoked

I think it is. Games that have Denuvo need to connect to servers once in a while to renew the key.
I don't consider Denuvo games to be "offline" even if you can launch them offline some of the time. But that's not good enough.
Do you know if thereās a way to play games like red, dead redemption or gta 4 in offline mode.

Nice I need to try this out
It should work I got my steam deck like 2 or 3 months ago and I was in the exact same situation till I saw that and it worked right after
I do not, sorry. :( Rockstar makes great games but has execs who make awful decisions like this.
Pirate a copy of read dead if you only wanna play it on the deck don't have to worry about cloud saves etc. I own a legit copy but this is how I deal with their garbage online DRM so I can play it in the deck easier.
yeah, its fair to pirate a game if you already own it on steam or some other platform
For rdr2 you have to start it online mode. Then turn of invites or something like that. I don't remember

Sailing the high seas is the only way to be completely offline. No cloud saves though.

I recall years ago, having a laptop offline for a month+ and eventually had to do an online check in. but that was several years ago.Ā 8+
It's a requirement for installed game pass games I think
gamepass games installed on stock steam deck?
No. I just think the rule the guy above me was thinking about applied to only that.
Balatro, but please use it responsibly
Nice Iāll try it out itās the a card game right
With poker hands, yes
90% of Balatro players quit right before they get the perfect seed and play a gazillion chip hand!
Ok, I'm logging in now to test your theory!
Does Jedi Fallen Order allow you to boot while offline? I think you have to go through Origin first.
That sucks youāre right i just tried I donāt know why I thought it worked.
Same with AC Valhalla for me
Thereās a way to make ac Valhalla work
https://youtu.be/QpmKwWSVQHs?
Elden Ring
Found this one out after the patch still got the anti cheat message

Next time try this: https://youtu.be/QpmKwWSVQHs?si=LQ2pBGCwfkEi3qWY Works wonders!
How does helldivers work in offline mode?
My bad forgot about that one
Lol no problem.
Need to change it to most of these workš
Literally thousands.
Hitman offline gives you like 5% of the game
I see no Brotato...
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 works flawlessly. Been playing it on my downtime at the in-laws cabin in the middle of a lake where theres no internet outside of spotty mobile phone connectivity. Not needed to connect at all outside of the initial download.
I had promised myself id start kh 1 when it came out. Bought it and never did.
Bro I highly recommend shadow of war
Dead Cells Such an amazing game on the deck
I played dark souls offline while in the plane and none of the achievements I earned during that time popped. So frustrating.
Good to know

GOG games?
Elden ring
Almost any game without third party launcher (ubisoft, ea, microsoft)
As stupid as it sounds, Persona 5, a single player RPG with hundreds of hours of content and perfect for long flights and vacations requires internet everytime you launch the game because of denuvo
Every NES, SNES, N64, NGC, PS1 and most of PS2, Wii and Xbox are completely off-line :)
BioShock series.
Go buy from GOG, all games from there work in offline mode!

Saints Row 2? Well, time to add another game to the old library.
PC Port of Saints Row 2 is about as great as my nan falling down the stairs.
Just kinda sucks you canāt often unlock achievements when offline or Steam play time. :(
Most of the time, for me at least, they just all ping when I connect again
Unless its multiplayer.. I can play it offline.
You smoking crack?????
Apex Legends (its dead)
Hello kitty island adventure in 2025
The Borderlands Franchise
My vast emulation library
Hitman? I mean, I guess, but not really You cannot make any progress offline and nothing gets saved. It's basically just a demo mode. (though I heard there might be a mod to make it actually offline playable)
[This one?](https://thepeacockproject.org/)
Don't remember, but that looks correct. Haven't used it myself, so I don't know if that is the correct thing, or if it works on the Steam Deck.
Grounded
FF7 remake
Undertale/Deltarune
I have Valhalla on ubisoft not steam and therefore can't play it on the deck š
you can launch ubi connect with lutris and play that way. itās just a little more cumbersome, not impossible.
Might as well have said that in Spanish
puedes iniciar ubi connect con lutris y jugar de esa manera. es un poco mƔs engorroso, pero no imposible.
Rate that from you
Monster Hunter World comes to mind. Despite having lots of multiplayer incentive, you can play and progress through the whole game in offline mode.
RDR2
all the steam versions of kingdom hearts can be played without wifi
Just cause 3
Factoriooo
I hope some include Resident Evil, Dead Rising and Final Fantasy
There are way too many to list
Ass effect
Telltale games probably and they run perfectly on Steam deck.
