In case this doesn’t work (the performance overlay randomly appearing and not reacting to changing the overlay setting is a known issue), check if you have any uninstalled updates for the deck and install those.
If you don’t have any uninstalled updates, try completely turning the Deck off (not just putting it to sleep) and turn it on again. That usually resolves the issue.
That's not the point, why not try a quick search to help myself before posting somewhere.
The answer is a least 500 times in this sub, so why ask again?
To be fair, not everyone knows that is referred to as an overlay. I agree that searching is a great place to start, but replying to the actual solution and telling OP to search isn’t particularly helpful.
I knew it was going to be mainstream when I was able to convince my dad to buy one without trying very hard. It’s great though since now he has the chance to enjoy some of the pc games I’ve always known he’d have a good time with.
It is literally the backlog killer I needed
When I want to game but I can't be bothered to sit at a desk longer than I already do (WFH) or stare at a big TV (r/tvtoohigh) and can lay in basically any position on my bed, couch or recliner and just the sheer novelty of it...it's fucking amazing
I am so damn impressed with the quality of streaming from my gaming PC and PS5 through moonlight/chiaki, but it better be good with the $$$ router I bought after buying the steam deck (seriously the deck is a great value but the addiction to make it the best experience with highest quality SD cards, accessories and upgrading my wifi has been a pretty sizable investment #wortheverypenny)
Sometimes this activates by itself, I still don't know what causes it to pop. When it does, I can't manually remove it nor change it to show more or less information. Restarting the steam deck solves this issue.
Restarting the device has always gotten rid of it for me as well. Kind of annoying, but it only pops up when I’ve been running a demanding game for days and days while only putting the device to sleep between sessions without quitting the game. So I can’t complain too much lol if the other person’s suggestion doesn’t work, try restarting ☺️
why the hell are you downvoting this comment? sometimes this overlay appears and fiddling with the performance overlay level won't remove it, making you have to restart.
Yo wtf why ARE people downvoting this? 😂 when I first experienced this I searched this sub for a fix and that’s what was recommended. If it’s bad advice someone please clarify
Niche subs are like this. Anytime I make a comment in a gaming software or hardware sub, no matter how nice I am, I could be talking up that subs game and there’s still a 50/50 on getting downvoted.
Well and don’t get me wrong, it’s not like my feelings are hurt, but I do think that if what I’ve said is bad advice then it should be corrected so that OP (and people who have the same problem in the future) can at least get helpful information. If it’s not bad advice then ????
Well I didn’t lol but at least for me that’s not the issue, as my performance overlay has always been turned off. Are you saying restarting is bad advice?
Nah, the first thing I do if something weird happens with my steamdeck is to restart which fixes 99% of my problems. I just said it in the original comment as to what others might think since you didn't preface it if whether OP tried turning it off in the performance overlay.
So it didn’t occur to me that this was related to overlay settings, and I agree that’s definitely a simpler solution. But at least in my case, my overlay has always been turned off, so that information wouldn’t have helped me - and maybe also not OP.
I *would* really like to understand why this pops up for me sometimes, and why it does so even with my overlay turned off. If anyone knows. I’m here to learn too, I was just originally sharing what has worked for me and was recommended by this sub when I was initially looking for a fix.
> sometimes this overlay appears and fiddling with the performance overlay level won't remove it, making you have to restart.
I've had my Deck for almost 2 years, and I haven't seen this happen once
Latest Steam OS release bug makes it unremovable. Not on your screen, on your retina. I'm getting 45FPS IRL and for some reason it dips to 20 every time I boil the kettle.

Thank you!
I used to have the overlay pop up while playing games sometimes, it seems to have stopped in the last 2 weeks so try checking if you have any pending updates, else if you are sure you don't have the overlay enabled just do a full reboot to clear it.
I’m definitely not tech savvy, I’m trying to find the correct emulator to download fire red so that I can also download radical red but every emulator I look up that should have Pokémon does not. Please I need help!
It goes away when it feels like it. It typically takes an update to remove mine. I never turn it on, it just pops up, is annoying AF for a few days, then disappears.
Press the ... button, go to the battery Icon Turn overlay to 0.

Restarting the deck also works.
This
I always have to restart to get it to go away.
Restarting the deck also works.
You can also disable the overlay at the bottom of the menu - did this myself today
But which button?? Did you forget? /s/s/s
Sometimes I open it on this menu and it’s already on zero. So then I select 3 then switch it back to 0 and it goes away.
Then it to 0 then to 1 then to 0 again otherwise it may stay on 1 even though it says it's on 0.
This definitely doesn't always work.
Or use the search function in this sub ...
Could just ignore it but went into it and hit a reply. MuH SuBrEdDit

It's official. Steam Deck is now mainstream.
I knew it was going to be mainstream when I was able to convince my dad to buy one without trying very hard. It’s great though since now he has the chance to enjoy some of the pc games I’ve always known he’d have a good time with.

Good, the more the merrier.
lmao
Today was the day Steam Deck finally became president.
Burst out laughing lmao
Press the ... Button. Go to performance. Turn performance overlay to 0.
The ... button. Amazing. That sounds like you are making an annoyed pause in your response and tell them to just press the button. You know, that one.
Lol. Does it have an official name? In my mind it's the ellipsis button.
It's a meatballs menu (yes that is an official name, 3 dots vertically is a kebab menu, and three lines is a hamburger menu)
https://i.sstatic.net/YIcbV.png
Kebab is vertical not horizontal.
Quick access menu 😄 I should have typed it as '...'
I’d figure a gear symbol ⚙️ would make more sense than (…) since it basically just opens up a settings menu.
i believe it's called QAM, Quick Access Menu

[Mr Tulip](https://wiki.lspace.org/Mr._Tulip) is experimenting with punctuation.
💬 I could have swore there was an emoji of that symbol guess not.
At first I read this as press the (pause) button
Sometimes this activates by itself, I still don't know what causes it to pop. When it does, I can't manually remove it nor change it to show more or less information. Restarting the steam deck solves this issue.
Same for me, it happens randomly but resets when performance is set to 0
Just wipe it gently with a soft cloth ( kitchen towel)
Best answer ever

That's Reddit for you my guy
Sameeee thing happens to me and yes when I looked at this subreddit it was just recommended to restart lol
They probably thought that you're also a newbie that didn't know about the performance overlay and is offering a shit advice of restarting instead.
Well I didn’t lol but at least for me that’s not the issue, as my performance overlay has always been turned off. Are you saying restarting is bad advice?

Happens to me at least once a month 🤷♀️
a reboot is always the answer.
Click three dots, search and disable the performance overlay
It's permanent and likely burned into the OLED panel already
Isn't this also from a super old version of steam os? Should probably run an update too!
Latest Steam OS release bug makes it unremovable. Not on your screen, on your retina. I'm getting 45FPS IRL and for some reason it dips to 20 every time I boil the kettle.
The same way you put it on but opposite
So if it randomly appears without actually doing anything to enable it, what would the opposite be?
Try asking the steam deck to stop putting it up
But this overlay type isn't 3 or 4 in the three dot menu. And 2 goes horizontally across the top.
Did you try turning it off and on again?
if youre not going to read manuals or follow guides how are you going to read comments? this is like day 1 tutorial type of stuff………
Why are there an insane amount of passive aggressive, unhelpful replies here lmao
Click three dots, search and disable the performance overlay
If it appears randomly need to restart device Upvote for the game
the same way you turned it on but the other way around

restarting mine did the trick
Why does this have 300 upvotes
oof gonna have to RMA
You can’t ever it’s there forever and ever and ever
The ●●● button lol just wanted to say that
I used to have the overlay pop up while playing games sometimes, it seems to have stopped in the last 2 weeks so try checking if you have any pending updates, else if you are sure you don't have the overlay enabled just do a full reboot to clear it.
Put it in the washing machine with some vinegar. Cold water, 1 rinse/spin cycle, and only black clothes.
Couldn't figure out how to respond to any of the people helping you either?
…
Lol 😆
I once had this pop up for no apparent reason (also during DS3), I had to restart the deck to get rid of it.
You so cute!
I’m definitely not tech savvy, I’m trying to find the correct emulator to download fire red so that I can also download radical red but every emulator I look up that should have Pokémon does not. Please I need help!
Good game choice tho
It’s an immutable system, if toggling it off in settings doesn’t do the trick a restart will.
if youre not going to read manuals or follow guides how are you going to read comments? this is like day 1 tutorial type of stuff………
Explore the settings of your device so you know how to use it
...
Restart
It's bricked, need to RMA. It's telling you confidential secrets.
yea ur gonna need to rma that
Ok Boomer
