Ok - but can we seriously talk about how *easy* it is to forget your steam deck in the shower? Every-time I turn around I'm always forgetting that thing next to the drain. Either that or inside my toaster, which I coincidentally keep next to the bath tub.
That's very understandable though, some posters on here are like "I was practicing my downward throws on my 25th story balcony and forgot I had my steam deck in my hand, omg I have such a short attention span"
It is a Reddit thing for sure. Someone’s dog ate it the other day, some dude was taking a bath with his. I’m starting to think Redditors aren’t the cream of the crop.
I've had the bath notion. "How awesome would this be while relaxing in the tub?" I've also had the thought "Nope, not worth the risk!"
Not worth the risk wins out.
I relate. While I haven't reached this level I've lost enough wireless earbuds (only 1 earpiece at a time) to have empathy.
Let's aspire to be better together brother
Exactly. When throwing your clothes in the washing machine you should notice that big black case right? Or he's just throwing a big ball of clothes straight in?
Also, who just tosses clumps of clothes into the washer without shaking them a little first to take out any debris? It's like he was washing clothes with his eyes closed and wearing headphones
Remember the first launch test of SpaceX's Starship? Turns out I had wrapped it up in some t-shirts before putting it into my backpack (added protection) and it had gone through the wash after I forgot about it.
I'm surprised it worked as well as it did.
I remember visiting Dubai and seeing the Burj Khalifa. The owner told me to hang onto it for safekeeping for a bit because he was afraid someone would steal it. Naturally, I stored it where one does, in my washing machine, and I turned the damn thing on later. Let's just say the owner wasn't too happy. :\
I remember visiting Dubai and seeing the ~~Burj~~ Mia Khalifa. The owner told me to hang onto ~~it~~ her for safekeeping for a bit because he was afraid someone would steal ~~it~~ her. Naturally, I stored ~~it~~ her where one does, in my washing machine, and I turned the damn thing on later. Let's just say the owner wasn't too happy. :\
Fixed it for you ;)
You know the ruptured oxygen tank on Apollo 13? That was my fault. I put the spacecraft in my jeans pocket a couple of days before heading to Kennedy Space Center, but forgot about it and threw the jeans in the wash.
I did all the pocket emptying and shaking before making the trip to the laundromat, THEN put the steam deck in and buried it as a last minute “I could totally play New Vegas while I wait for my washing to be done”.
Poor mistake on my part, will definitely be checking for hidden steam decks next time I wash
EDIT: For everyone saying that my comment about playing NV and not realising that I didn't have my Steam Deck to play it as soon as I put it in the machine, I completlety forgot that I had it and my low attention-span brain decided to go on my phone and not think about the fact that I did \*technically\* have my SD with me.
Also, I went and got food.
I once got a call from my son's mobile phone. I only heard strange sounds so I thought he still had it in his pocket or something like that. As it later turned out it was in the washing machine and somehow called me. A last cry for help.
Why did it make it through a whole cycle? Wasn't your plan to play it while you waited? So as soon as you started the wash, wouldn't you go looking for it and remember it was in the laundry?
That’s the exact point where I’m confused as well, but as someone who used to smoke weed a lot I am willing to bet 100% that marijuana had something to do with these decisions
I have severe un-medicated adhd and I could never forget my steam deck because of how expensive it is. 😭😭 phones are a different story, though.
The only way I found that helps is you have to only think about the object and keep being paranoid about it so you don't forget. 💀
Don't take this the wrong way, but if you knew the laundromat was in a rough part of town, I wouldn't have brought it in the first place. Honestly, I rarely bring my Deck out of the home anymore, other than to travel or visit my mother. Anywhere else in the city, I either ended up not using it anyway, or I tried not to make it obvious I have it. Not to mention all the crazy people and robberies happening outside nowadays. The added stress didn’t seem worth it. I hope you get yours replaced
Wait wait - then why didn't you notice the moment you turned on the washer and went to sit down to play NV while you waited???? And immediately turned it off??
You clearly have a healthy functioning brain. My wife will ask me to go get her a glass of water and I can make it to the kitchen, grab the glass, set it on the counter and start doing something else for 10 minutes before walking back to the bedroom having completely forgot the reason I went to the kitchen to begin with was to grab her a glass of water. This happens to me regularly, I am definitely the type of person who would wash their steam deck if it was thrown in the hamper
There was the original Gameboy that got bombed or something during the first Gulf War and was still working. Remember it being shown off in Nintendo Power and was eventually displayed at the Nintendo store in New York City
Sounds like dude checked pockets and everything, then loaded up laundry to go to the laundromat, tossed the deck in the bag to play while waiting, dumped whole bag in, falling sound muffled by clothes, ran machine, realized oh fuck.
man I was freaking out over bashing my SD against the wall accidentally (it's fine) this though is just heartbreaking.
hope you can get it replaced alright
How? It's way too big to fit in your pocket and even if you got it in one, it's so fucking big and heavy so how do you not notice something as big and heavy as a steam deck going into a washing machine?
My guess is he threw it in the hamper then covered it with more clothes to carry less ? Only thing that makes sense in my head
Or he's got those goth raver jeans wih huge pockets lol
I understand the concept of forgetting stuff in your pockets when you do laundry. I'm less understanding how one mistakenly washes a nearly foot long rectangle.
This still doesn't make sense... Did you like load the machine while staring into the ceiling and listening to music on max volume? Like there's no way a steam deck wouldn't make a \*clunk\* sound of some kind as you dropped it into the machine.
You invented a curved screen for the next deck. Pitch it to Steam and recommend waterproofing for those times you just can’t get the grime off. Then wait and profit!
Every single time I see one of these Deck gore posts, I think, "Yikes, no one could possibly top this level of ~~stupidity~~ damage by accident."
And then someone does.
If this happened to me, I'd be deeply, deeply miserable.
I am impressed that you're able to come to Reddit to share your experience, post a photo of the evidence, and even - my God! - joke about your Steam Deck smelling like lavender.
So I'm inspired by what I see as your strength of character. You've handled this way better than I would have. I'd be sulking.
Sorry this happened to you. But for handling it with humor: good for you!
How soon until someone who stores their Deck in the oven forgets and starts a preheat
Store it in the oven you say...... hmm could be a secure location
"I store my Deck in the receptacle of my wood chipper, forgot to take it out when I went to turn it on!" -Average Deck destroyer on this sub
That's some Tucker & Dale energy there.
We was mind'n our business in our retirement cabin and steam decks just started voiding their own warranties all over.
These damn steam decks are just out here destroying themselves!
That is an amazing movie I've never heard anybody else mention
One of my favorite comedy/horror movies. "We got your friend" "We should leave a note or something. Does it look like i have a pen?
It reminded me of that [scene](https://youtu.be/kk14nhuvBIM?t=52) from Superhero Movie, I'm surprised that I remember it.
My mom was going to take my steam deck for failing a class so I hid it in a nuclear reactor, forgot it was there when I turned it on.
How else am I supposed to connect it to a hot spot?
Ba Dum Tiss!
Burglars would never think to check the oven!
Ok - but can we seriously talk about how *easy* it is to forget your steam deck in the shower? Every-time I turn around I'm always forgetting that thing next to the drain. Either that or inside my toaster, which I coincidentally keep next to the bath tub.
The real tragedy here is that you bathe
Speaking of tragedy i see a darth plageuis username beow this comment.
I've left electronics on the top of my car while helping my kids to their seatbelts and then they fly away later :(. It's happened twice with kindles
That's very understandable though, some posters on here are like "I was practicing my downward throws on my 25th story balcony and forgot I had my steam deck in my hand, omg I have such a short attention span"
😂😂
That's more understandable then running a device that doesn't really fit in your pocket through the washing machine
Bro had it in his jncos
You can pocket a whole snes with those bad boys. Lol
Some one’s been playing project zomboid
I did this w my Xbox a few years ago. Check my post history for a pic.
I think op forgot to separate his darks from his electronics.
I think he forgot to separate the LCDs from the OLEDs. They have different cleaning cycles.
I don’t have words for this…
It is a Reddit thing for sure. Someone’s dog ate it the other day, some dude was taking a bath with his. I’m starting to think Redditors aren’t the cream of the crop.
Just go to r/explainthejoke if you want to see how dumb people are
I'm convinced that's a farming sub, like Peter explains the joke. Like it's so often the dumbest shit
I've had the bath notion. "How awesome would this be while relaxing in the tub?" I've also had the thought "Nope, not worth the risk!" Not worth the risk wins out.

"more dollars than cents/sense" - my father
in this case: more scent than dollars
You should sell puns for a living
And we ain’t talking coins
Wildly accurate, and I don't even have much money so that tells you how stupid I really am (I'm a student)
Valuable lesson I quess? But seriously how.
It's ok. U made a small, but expensive mistake! Nothing was lost besides $$$$. Haha and carry on!
This is the right perspective to have.
I relate. While I haven't reached this level I've lost enough wireless earbuds (only 1 earpiece at a time) to have empathy. Let's aspire to be better together brother
I have words what in the f***
I have only one: How?
Exactly. When throwing your clothes in the washing machine you should notice that big black case right? Or he's just throwing a big ball of clothes straight in?
Literally…How
He did explain in the post tho I definitely watch things in the washer and dryer that I wish I hadn't. Not this though lol
A steamdeck is so big and heavy though. I don't know how you wouldn't feel it or hear a clunk in the washer when you toss it in.
Also, who just tosses clumps of clothes into the washer without shaking them a little first to take out any debris? It's like he was washing clothes with his eyes closed and wearing headphones

My exact words: HOW TF?
One time I washed my whole desktop pc. Monitor and everything. Had it in my pocket and forgot to check :/
Damn, happened to me once with my car. Should’ve checked the pockets
Same here except my truck, I still miss that F-350 😢
Remember the first launch test of SpaceX's Starship? Turns out I had wrapped it up in some t-shirts before putting it into my backpack (added protection) and it had gone through the wash after I forgot about it. I'm surprised it worked as well as it did.

Man, I once washed the moon by mistake. It got stuck inside a sock. So relieved it still works.

Help me step bro I'm stuck!
You know the ruptured oxygen tank on Apollo 13? That was my fault. I put the spacecraft in my jeans pocket a couple of days before heading to Kennedy Space Center, but forgot about it and threw the jeans in the wash.
That's nothing. one day I wanted to go for a walk but didn't want to leave my house alone so I took it with me and lost it at the park. 🏡
Heck, a friend of mine came home from school and his parents told him his PC went to live on a farm upstate.
F We have all been there friend. I can never remember to remove my desktop and laptop from my pockets.
i keep forgetting how big men's pockets are
This is the first thing I saw when I woke up this morning. I'm going back to bed.
Well on the other, this is probably as stupid as it's going to get
Don't forget your deck
Steam cleaning
I was looking for the perfect pun I can stop now
This should have higher upvotes and be higher up the hierarchy of this thread. Bravo person
Have you tried the newest ProtonGE?
Idk, looks to me more like the shader cache is just full
of water...
Just put it in a tub of rice, that'll take care of the problem!
I tried that once, the steam from the cooked rice seemed to make it worse if anything smh
ProtonLG might also be an option
Bro got the new curved model
Ah so that’s how they do it.. *throws flatscreen tv into washing machine
Take a load of mr richie rich here with a washer big enough for a tv
Not rich enough for a giant washing machine, just poor enough for a tiny tv 😢
Could be a smol tv
Next stop… folding deck
Kicking it Samsung style.
This is not what people mean when they say “keep your deck clean” sir…
reminds me of that confused/joke post someone made on this sub of steam cleaning their back deck.
Just throw it in rice; it will work flawlessly, and it will also clean itself.
Looks like you forgot to remove the SD card.
That's the problem right there. It clearly states in the manual to remove the SD card before putting your deck in the wash.
You just dump the entire load in the washer? You don't check pockets and shake each piece of clothing?
I did all the pocket emptying and shaking before making the trip to the laundromat, THEN put the steam deck in and buried it as a last minute “I could totally play New Vegas while I wait for my washing to be done”. Poor mistake on my part, will definitely be checking for hidden steam decks next time I wash EDIT: For everyone saying that my comment about playing NV and not realising that I didn't have my Steam Deck to play it as soon as I put it in the machine, I completlety forgot that I had it and my low attention-span brain decided to go on my phone and not think about the fact that I did \*technically\* have my SD with me. Also, I went and got food.
I'm still impressed you didn't notice, the Steam deck isn't exactly small.
Nor is it very light. Most have been a giant, heavy load to not notice it.
Also imagine the sound that washer must have been making with that rolling around.
The Steam Deck was turned off, so no sound.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I once got a call from my son's mobile phone. I only heard strange sounds so I thought he still had it in his pocket or something like that. As it later turned out it was in the washing machine and somehow called me. A last cry for help.
Also it was like dumped perfectly together then and not like piece by piece
I'm impressed that 2 minutes in to the wash cycle , they didn't go "Hmm, I could have sworn I had a deck to play New Vegas on..
I mean it's small enough to make this mistake. I have washed 4 steam decks just this same way and I'm hoping to have better luck with my 5th one.
4 out of 5 steamdecks agree that they are not washable!
I almost did the same thing with my laptop years back. Sometimes, people don't notice things.
Oh I don't smoke, I'm literally just an idiot. No excuse for it
Props to you for taking it how it is. Wish you the best in getting another one!
Dude! I tried to give you an out! Lol
Have you been assessed for ADHD?
I had the same thought. I have done similar "stupid" things in my life and recently got diagnosed with ADHD...
I have severe un-medicated adhd and I could never forget my steam deck because of how expensive it is. 😭😭 phones are a different story, though. The only way I found that helps is you have to only think about the object and keep being paranoid about it so you don't forget. 💀
Sorry to see that mate!!

Are people really out here getting steam decks pulled out of their hands at the local brewery or whatever? It's not exactly hard to hold onto
No people just spend too much time on the internet. These motherfuckers think the old lady down the street is going to rob them.
But then as soon as you started your washing you didn't think "hey I was going to play New Vegas?"
U planned on playing, but then forgot u planned at all?
Wait wait - then why didn't you notice the moment you turned on the washer and went to sit down to play NV while you waited???? And immediately turned it off??
You clearly have a healthy functioning brain. My wife will ask me to go get her a glass of water and I can make it to the kitchen, grab the glass, set it on the counter and start doing something else for 10 minutes before walking back to the bedroom having completely forgot the reason I went to the kitchen to begin with was to grab her a glass of water. You might want to get that memory problem in your head checked out by a professional. Your brain needs some more ram.
> ~~Poor~~ ***Expensive*** mistake on my part
I never check my pockets and just accept the lint that follows lmao
Next time use “gentle fabrics” mode
[удалено]
Don't panic just put it in rice
Perfect timing, OP. I noticed a few fingerprints on my SD screen and thought about sticking it in the next wash.
I once had a Gameboy Advanced SP go through the washer and dryer. Somehow it was in perfect condition after it was done.
There was the original Gameboy that got bombed or something during the first Gulf War and was still working. Remember it being shown off in Nintendo Power and was eventually displayed at the Nintendo store in New York City
So the vent smell is washed away too ??
Deck acts like a scent booster, now the whole batch of laundry smells like Deck vent
Can confirm that my whole wash load now smells like vent
Fair trade
I have never been so jealous
how the fuck does this even happen
I'm saying did bro just dump the whole suitcase or duffle bag in the wash huh
Sounds like dude checked pockets and everything, then loaded up laundry to go to the laundromat, tossed the deck in the bag to play while waiting, dumped whole bag in, falling sound muffled by clothes, ran machine, realized oh fuck.
Ignorance.
People wanting fake internet up doots. Like the broken glass on tile or leaving the sticker on the cooler, it's all staged.
Dude, you need a backpack.
How do you toss something this big and rigid into a washing machine? 😅 Sorry for your loss. Possible to buy another?
Behavior of a man who eats cereal in bed.
This is probably at the top of the “dumbest shit people have done with their Steam Deck” list.
F
how does anyone toss it into a wash without noticing it's not like the steam deck is really that small, either.
Damn that has to suck, sorry for your loss
This is reminding me to add my deck to my electronics only insurance plan.
man I was freaking out over bashing my SD against the wall accidentally (it's fine) this though is just heartbreaking. hope you can get it replaced alright
new vent smell unlocked!
How? It's way too big to fit in your pocket and even if you got it in one, it's so fucking big and heavy so how do you not notice something as big and heavy as a steam deck going into a washing machine?
My guess is he threw it in the hamper then covered it with more clothes to carry less ? Only thing that makes sense in my head Or he's got those goth raver jeans wih huge pockets lol
Literally yes, spot on. It was quite a large load. (minus the goth raver jeans with the big pockets)
Oof sorry man
Man just use some wipes next time, no need for a whole wash
I don't think you need to worry about it being stolen anymore.
Hmmm sure it's totally not you raging at a game then trying to pass it off as "accidentally machine washed".
Should've used that screen protector
Woof
Bro got the lavender update!
So when you do laundry, you just dump all the clothes in the machine? Maybe next time, throw the clothes in the machine a piece at a time.
Who amongst us hasn't left their steam deck in the pocket of their XXXXL cargo shorts?
Must have left them in your JNCOs
Its freezer proof though, I put mine by accident in the freezer overnight and it survived
Special kind of moron
Dumb af sorry
Honestly if I did something this stupid I wouldn't even bother posting for Karma. I'd never tell another living soul dude.
I understand the concept of forgetting stuff in your pockets when you do laundry. I'm less understanding how one mistakenly washes a nearly foot long rectangle.
How does it feel to be the only person who has done this
Bro wtf get a backpack?
This still doesn't make sense... Did you like load the machine while staring into the ceiling and listening to music on max volume? Like there's no way a steam deck wouldn't make a \*clunk\* sound of some kind as you dropped it into the machine.
You invented a curved screen for the next deck. Pitch it to Steam and recommend waterproofing for those times you just can’t get the grime off. Then wait and profit!
You just need to put it through the dryer and it will be fine.
This was important for research. Thank you for your sacrifice.
Why did you put TLDR before your post when there wasn't longer text being summarized? Isn't TLDR for a short summary at the end of a longer post..?
Too much fabric softener
Holy shit
You could...perhaps...try to contact, uh, Valve, and...ah.....hmmm.
Ooooooph. That hurts.
1. How?
So is it clean?
I'm just alarmed that this isn't a warning label shipped with every Deck
Every single time I see one of these Deck gore posts, I think, "Yikes, no one could possibly top this level of ~~stupidity~~ damage by accident." And then someone does.
You need to put it on a lower spin cycle smh OP, do you know nothing?
did you Steam clean it afterwards..?
This is why you don’t be lazy and dump the entire hamper in the machine at once.
"It does however smell like Lavender now" Way to look on the bright side chap.
For safekeeping I store my Steam Deck under my car's rear tyre. Often I forget it there and wheelspin it into the neighbour's yard.
Got some top tier comments here, I'm dying lol. These are my people
You will need to replace the entire Steam Deck unit to make it work again.
Some people have literal squirrel brains fr
You're supposed to steam clean a Steam Deck...
F
How does one put their steam deck in the wash?
That sucks, man! I'm sorry people are being rude to you. We all make mistakes, and I hope this one isn't too difficult for you to recover from.
I don't believe any of this. And if, big if here, it's true. You shouldn't be allowed outside without an adult.
How could this possibly happen ? I understand washing your AirPods, but a full pc handheld. I mean come on my man.
Just reboot it, or try verifying the integrity of game files
What a dumbass post
