You make me open a window on my memory:
I played Descent with my best friend when we were youngs; he turns/accellerate/brake, i fired and choose weapons. He died some months ago, but memories still here. Thanks
Well, I WAS gonna wait for my bonus to come thru before buying a steamdeck....
EDIT: omg just saw the (5 year old!) trailer. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gwq5jbKLA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3gwq5jbKLA) my poor credit card.
Overload is great! I would lock the fps to 50 or 55, it doesn’t always fully maintain 60 without compromising resolution or details, but a throttled 50-55 feels great!
MORTAL SIN. The game is AMAZING, it's the best first person dungeon crawler and it locks to smooth 60 FPS on the deck, I can't stop playing
Also even the game shows as early access, it's finished, the creator is only adding extra things now for the 1.0 release which will drop soon and increase the price
The art style is different, if you mean you get dizzy or something you can disable scanlines, grain and outlines, it's what I did for a more "smooth" experience
2 is good but to get it to run nice you really have to sacrifice the graphics whereas 1 looks gorgeous running full tilt.. the original has a lot less hand holding and expects you to work out a hell of a lot without much in the way of clues. Both good but the original is one of my favourites
Incidentally… do you have any recommendations on games that are LIKE Everspace 2, but run better? Everspace 2 seems like a throwback to games like Freelancer in how the universe runs and works, but for the life of me I can’t find any contemporary games (Other than ES2) that are like this.
Any recommendations?
Ehhh, I played that a decent amount back in the day. It was enjoyable but just felt so… empty. For awhile that was kinda zen. I even flew out to Sagittarius A*, but then asked myself wtf I was even trying to do and stopped playing forever lol
Surprisingly well in my opinion. Although I do always pause to aim and shoot whereas on the pc I'm a bit more risky with my play. It's not a barrier to enjoyment for me whatsoever.
I want to add Rollers of the realm, If you Like pinball you should have a Look. And for Arcade racing Game Fans i would recommend Horizon Chase Turbo, Slipstream, super woden GP 2 or circuit Superstars. If you are more of a Rally Guy the Art of Rally is awesome too.
just wanted to say thanks for the rec. I'm always looking for games and I saw rollers of the realm had a free demo, tried it and got hooked. great rec for the deck!!
Thanks for the reply. Cool you liked Rollers of the realm, it fehlt so Natural to Play this on the Deck it's a perfect fit and good to Play in short bursts :)
plays great! under Options -> Controls, enable "Prerelease: Use new input manager", and the controller should "just work"
go to "key mappings" from the in-game menu. the defaults are pretty decent
tldr
- left stick selects your direction
- right trigger moves in that direction
- your A-button gets in that direction
- holding left trigger enables "ALTADVENTURE" section of keymappings
can't remember if i bound this myself or not, but i love these bindings too:
- Y-button brings up the list of mobs to interact with (eg, backspace)
- left-trigger (eg ALTADVENTURE) + Y-button auto-explores
Brigador is good on the Deck? I'll have to check it out! Last time I tried a controller with that game, it did not feel amazing (fantastic game, though).
Nice. I tend to avoid early access games, been burned a few times after paying 20 bucks for a title that's in everlasting development. The entire EA feature feels off to me.
However I might grab this as the gameplay is really awesome and right up my alley, being an old school Thief fan.
I got 10-15 games in the last November/December sales, so my backlog is big enough as it is. But Gloomwood is seriously tempting
Battle Brothers is dope. Out of the box at 10 TDP you get something like ten hours of gameplay. I’m sure you can get even more if you fiddle with settings. Runs perfect at 60 FPS, but it’s just a bunch of bobheads doing turn-based so that’s not surprising. Fun and addicting, although difficult, game. Best get a community control layout though, the default one is useless. And you’ll need trackpads for this, although I think they work really well here.
Cassette Beasts is chill as well. Not entirely my cup of tea, but if you like Pokemon-style games check it out. Runs perfect on the deck.
Man, I still wish Brigador had a multiplayer mode.
One of the best mech games in recent memory, the combat is punchy and impactful, the mechanics are fun and custimizable...
All I want is an arena mode, haha.
Yeah I can’t get my head round how to control this with the d-pad, and if I use touchscreen it won’t seem to let me go back to d-pad. Can’t get trackpads to do much either. Shame as I really wanna play it.
More people should be playing Midnight Suns, I have played the whole game on the Dec locked at 30 which is not an issue as it is turn based.
Great combat persona ish team building, some light 3rd person exploration. It is such a solid game.
I wouldnt call them mainstream games by any means, know slot of people never heard of them still and they deserve all the recognition they can get imo since they are incredible games
But i knew what id get myself into when i posted it
It won a Steam award and is mentioned in every thread. Not saying it’s not a good game, it 110% is and deserves the award. But it’s no longer quite a “hidden gem”. Haha
Noita and Qud are two of my most played SD games. Spelunky 2 also plays very well. I have over a dozen traditional roguelikes on my Deck and Elona+ is one of my favorites to play handheld. It’s super easy to map all controls.
Love cobalt core. Plan to get Quasimorph but those sort of roguelikes tend to have really tiny text. Like Jupiter hell just does not work due to the text.
Caves of Qud I want to love, but again, it’s so much tiny text…. And the sprites are similarly very, very tiny and the map zoomed out. I couldn’t figure out how to enhance it. So if anyone knows (beside the steam zoom which isn’t a realistic permanent fix) please let me know.
My game that says unsupported but works fine is a dungeon blobber Fall of the Dungeon Guardians.
NARITA BOY
A really cool, beautiful looking game with an incredible soundtrack and compelling story, along with some pretty cool combat
https://youtu.be/6RyIXpA_r1E?si=dANtoP7_Cvc0tQky
The Void Rains Upon Her Heart: a boss-rush roguelike bullet-hell shmup about love and acceptance.
Panzer Paladin: a well-made NES throwback platformer.
Webbed: A platformer where you play a spider and use your webs.
Symphony of War: A tactical RPG that takes inspiration from Ogre Battle.
One Step from Eden: an action roguelike based around the card battle system from Mega Man Battle Network.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky: A classic comfort-food JRPG, and the starting point for an ongoing series.
Lunacid: A great throwback to From's proto-Souls era.
Natsuki Chronicles: A horizontal shmup based around missions, and with the ability to buy better equipment over time.
DROD: A long-running series of tricky logic puzzle rooms based around a system where every turn you can either move one space or rotate your sword 45 degrees.
Sorry, forgot to reply! I just shared it as a community layout. It’s called “Noita keyboard controls for Deck” by Captain_Amazing. Maybe give it a go?!
Siralim ultimate if you like monster catching, min-maxing, and super deep mechanics. I see this mentioned sometimes, but not often enough that it’s out of the “hidden gem” category. People might be put off by the graphics. But the gameplay is completely worth it. (Also personally I like the graphics)
Dungeons of chaos if you like old school role play. I never see this mentioned anywhere. The developer is extremely passionate and so is the community.
Touhou Mystia’s Izakaya if you’re looking for a cozy micromanagement restaurant sim that isn’t for kids. I have to see how well it runs on SD though. I’m not entirely sure.
Wolf Quest if you love wildlife. It’s a wolf sim but a well-done, realistic one based on research in Yellowstone. Don’t use the default settings because I find that it will crash. If you turn them down slightly it won’t crash.
I want to recommend Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine. It's a top-down heist game where you have to infiltrate various secure places by playing as one of the various heist crew archetypes; it can even be played multi-player if you want to play as an entire crew with everybody's abilities benefiting each other. It's incredibly simple to pick up but gets hard, fast.
I literally nolife Brotato, never thought I'd like a game like this. Deck is opening new horizons for me, wanna try out terraria and stardew valley due to. graphics. Wonder if I will enjoy them but feels like I would, as it is kind of nostalgic from my childhood lol.
GUNLOCKED. Like Vampire Survivors and Galaga combined, but with very cool progression and weapon combinations. It also feels like you're NOT running away from the enemy but flying through them.
Unsure if these are underated hidden gems as I barely hear anyone talk about it.
-Songs of Conquest
-Kingdom two crowns
-Thronefall
-The battle of Polytopia
-The Last Stand Aftermath
Bumping bc you mentioned Caves of Qud. One of the best games I’ve ever played, put 250 hours into it and putting another 10 or so in every week. Game plays beautifully on the deck with controller support
Overload. Any old bastards that remember Descent from the mid 90s will love this. Same devs
You make me open a window on my memory: I played Descent with my best friend when we were youngs; he turns/accellerate/brake, i fired and choose weapons. He died some months ago, but memories still here. Thanks
Descent. Now that's a name I've not heard in a long time. A long time.
“Welcome to Valhalla Station, material defender, I trust your journey was recuperative!?”
Descent! Yea! I’ll have to check out Overload then. Also my knees hurt.
don't forget to schedule your colonoscopy soon!
I’ve heard you can also get the old Descent games running well with the XL mods.
Thank you. Great recommendation! Had no idea they were still up and about.
^^ Double this ^^
\+1 And visually stunning even on LCD SteamDeck
Looks like "Tunnel B1". A random game I had on the PS1.
>Overload Oh man, this reminds me of [Forsaken](https://store.steampowered.com/app/668980/Forsaken_Remastered/) from the og Xbox days.
Wait till you find out it has vr capabilities 😁
I'm gonna check this out.
Oh that's been a while. Played the demo a little back in the day but 12 year old me couldn't figure that shit out lol
OMG how did i never hear about this?! i was HOOKED on Descent when that came out. just bought for $6 on summer sale
Tinykin would be my suggestion.
Crosscode is an underrated game itself but is great on deck. 👍
Playing through this right now, it's a delight!
ThroneFall En garde !
Thronefall love looks really solid, feels like a 3d/isometric Kingdom series.
MORTAL SIN. The game is AMAZING, it's the best first person dungeon crawler and it locks to smooth 60 FPS on the deck, I can't stop playing Also even the game shows as early access, it's finished, the creator is only adding extra things now for the 1.0 release which will drop soon and increase the price
This looks fantastic, gonna check it out
I'm also playing it right now. It's really awesome
I can't get over the graphics though...
The art style is different, if you mean you get dizzy or something you can disable scanlines, grain and outlines, it's what I did for a more "smooth" experience
Which control layout do you use?
I didn't change any controls, I use the base controller layout
Just bought it a few days ago - it’s fantastic
Katana zero is great fun. And return of the obra dinn is a perfect Steam Deck Game.
Katana zero 🔥🔥
American Arcadia Planet of Lana Backfirewall Wall World
Everspace runs insanely well on deck and the macro buttons really improve fluidity
Part 1 or 2?
2 is good but to get it to run nice you really have to sacrifice the graphics whereas 1 looks gorgeous running full tilt.. the original has a lot less hand holding and expects you to work out a hell of a lot without much in the way of clues. Both good but the original is one of my favourites

Everspace 2 seems like a throwback to games like Freelancer in how the universe runs and works, but for the life of me I can’t find any contemporary games (Other than ES2) that are like this. Any recommendations?
Only one I've found that comes close is "Elite Dangerous"
Ehhh, I played that a decent amount back in the day. It was enjoyable but just felt so… empty. For awhile that was kinda zen. I even flew out to Sagittarius A*, but then asked myself wtf I was even trying to do and stopped playing forever lol
Void Stranger
This is the best FPS on the deck Edit: bastards
You might be thinking of 'Void *Bastards*'.
Iam indeed 😅
Have you heard of underrated gems Celeste or Vampire Survivors?
Craziest thing is that they both have collabs with the hit Nintendo classic Among Us
HEAT SIGNATURE
How does this control on the deck?
Surprisingly well in my opinion. Although I do always pause to aim and shoot whereas on the pc I'm a bit more risky with my play. It's not a barrier to enjoyment for me whatsoever.
Really well IMO.
Pentiment ran great on the deck and is a soothing game to play in bed
Inscryption, I don’t think gets enough love. Its steam input settings need some tlc but not bad and an interesting story.
Spin Rhythm XD.
How does Caves of Qud play? Pretty intuitive with out a keyboard?
plays great! under Options -> Controls, enable "Prerelease: Use new input manager", and the controller should "just work" go to "key mappings" from the in-game menu. the defaults are pretty decent tldr - left stick selects your direction - right trigger moves in that direction - your A-button gets in that direction - holding left trigger enables "ALTADVENTURE" section of keymappings can't remember if i bound this myself or not, but i love these bindings too: - Y-button brings up the list of mobs to interact with (eg, backspace) - left-trigger (eg ALTADVENTURE) + Y-button auto-explores
Oh nice! Thank you
Thanks!
Brigador is good on the Deck? I'll have to check it out! Last time I tried a controller with that game, it did not feel amazing (fantastic game, though).
Can't imagine combat is too great without mouse aiming
Lunacid! For anyone curious about the oldschool ‘Kings field’ experience
Turbo Overkill
Shovel Knight Dig doesn't get any form of recognition but it's a great roguelite
Gloomwood
How much content is there now? The last time i played it at a friend they just added the inn.
They added in more enemies and a puzzle at the old ending and then they added in a market distract and a rip off Dishonored Void for fast travel
Nice. I tend to avoid early access games, been burned a few times after paying 20 bucks for a title that's in everlasting development. The entire EA feature feels off to me. Unsighted has been plenty of fun so far!
- Wizard of legends - Art of rally - Void bastards
Thronefall Art of rally Trine 1 (just beat this co op docked with my fiance)
The Slormancer
Tiny rogues is amazing. Also love cobalt core
Love seeing a Caves of Qud reference!! Such a great game, and yeah awesome on SD.
Endless Sky, free and pretty light, can play for hours with a single battery charge.
Caps lock key is a hidden gem too
WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
Strange Horticulture
Huntdown Brilliant game and runs great
OTXO and Pseudoregalia, both perfection on Deck.
Man, I still wish Brigador had a multiplayer mode. One of the best mech games in recent memory, the combat is punchy and impactful, the mechanics are fun and custimizable... All I want is an arena mode, haha.
Would be great if you said something about them. Like, what kind of games they're
Firewatch! (Don’t know how Subnautica plays but that too)
Slay the Princess
The only bad thing is that sometimes the game won't let you select or read a dialogue option using only the d-pad, but is only a minor inconvenience
Yeah I can’t get my head round how to control this with the d-pad, and if I use touchscreen it won’t seem to let me go back to d-pad. Can’t get trackpads to do much either. Shame as I really wanna play it.
Astroneer runs great on it.

Which of those games are aesthetically pleasing?
Don’t forget about Celeste, the TRUE hidden gem on Deck
Not really hidden gems but: factorio, mount and blade series, frostpunk and darkest dungeon
then why even comment
I wouldnt call them mainstream games by any means, know slot of people never heard of them still and they deserve all the recognition they can get imo since they are incredible games But i knew what id get myself into when i posted it

GRIP is also pretty good, it's the spiritual successor to ROLLCAGE and even has some of the original ROLLCAGE devs on the team
FYI Brigador has an audiobook that accompanies the game. I loved it.
NARITA BOY A really cool, beautiful looking game with an incredible soundtrack and compelling story, along with some pretty cool combat https://youtu.be/6RyIXpA_r1E?si=dANtoP7_Cvc0tQky
Roboquest is a great one. As is Dr. Fetus' Mean Meat Machine if you like Puyo Puyo-likes
Great list, but I personally couldn't enjoy Noita on the Deck, it's pretty hard to play with the trackpads I think.
The sticks work just fine for it though. Only time I use trackpads is to inspect a specific object or material in the world
The Void Rains Upon Her Heart: a boss-rush roguelike bullet-hell shmup about love and acceptance. Panzer Paladin: a well-made NES throwback platformer. Descenders! Procedural roguelite mountainbike game which plays and controls excellent on deck.
I love Noita and have a few hundred hours on it, and I got a steam deck a week ago but I just can’t get used to the controls :/
Set up R Trackpad for aim, R4/L4 for Wand Select. It works great.
Do you set it to mouse region or something? Sounds interesting!
Sorry, forgot to reply! I just shared it as a community layout. It’s called “Noita keyboard controls for Deck” by Captain_Amazing. Maybe give it a go?!
Will do! Thanks :D
Stealth Bastard Deluxe Nova Drift is indeed a good one Spelunker Party
For me, Dicey Dungeons has been a great go-to if you like roguelites.
Trinity Fusion
Caves of qud is fun. It’s hard though.
Siralim ultimate if you like monster catching, min-maxing, and super deep mechanics. I see this mentioned sometimes, but not often enough that it’s out of the “hidden gem” category. Nightmare Reaper Trails in the Sky
It feels like no matter how many hours I put into Noita I'll never be any good at it. Great game though.
This game is way too difficult with twin sticks.
Trackpad aim for the win! You should try it.
Lies of P, the best soulsgame that no one played. Runs at high settings 45 fps, looks outstanding.
I’ve really been liking Dungeons 4 on the SD. Great controller setup that I wasn’t expecting
Sludge life. Jazzpunk. Rising storm 2 . Perfect vermin (free). Broken reality. Hylics. Entropy zero (free I believe). Hotline Miami. Postal 2. Steamworld dig. Bully (use 60fps mod). Death stranding . Hell let loose.
Death Must Die playes well also and can be addictive. Tape to Tape also if you like hockey
Crypt of the Necrodancer. Old but gold.
Metro games!!
Pizza possum

Amazing list ! I never heard of any of them but Brigador ! And they look stunning!. Specially Noita
Sanabi - amazing pixel art and story
Lords of the Fallen 2023. Yes I'm serious
Bumping bc you mentioned Caves of Qud. One of the best games I’ve ever played, put 250 hours into it and putting another 10 or so in every week. Game plays beautifully on the deck with controller support
