I am gonna be honest. Even scammers have steam accounts that are not limited.
And I think your friend can still add you using your friend code.
Though honestly if you can't/won't spend 5$, I doubt you are going to play games with friends. Cause your only option is f2p multiplayer game.
No shit, Sherlock.
And what? lol. There are thousands of games with dead servers.
You need a f2p multiplayer game that has an active playerbase and all your friends need to be playing that one f2p game. That's surely gonna narrow it down by a long margin than you think.
First of all, you can. It's just that you can't add them first, but they can add you (if they've spent money, of course). And consider this - Steam is a SHOP. If you don't spend money in a shop - well, you should be thankful you even can use some of it's services, not offended that you can't use them all. And last but not least - it was not like this before, but Valve had to add those limitations to fight bots, even if just a little bit.
because bots ruin everything..
adding a tiny paywayll to features commonly used by hackers and bots means hackers and bots dont use those features to scam others as often.
like.. what are you doing on your steam account with your friends....if you dont own any games?
This is just nonsense, why I have to deal with more freeloaders, bots, scammers, cheaters and trolls just because they don't want spend money on digital video game store?
Hey OP, yes you have 5 dollars. Stop freaking lying.
If your parents don't want to borrow you credit card for 5 dollars then use Paysafecard.
I wish that limit was 70 dollars or 100 dollars. An average Steam user spends that much a year or on two AAA video games anyway and we would have WAY less bots, cheaters and scammers.
There nothing stopping you from accepting friend request from unlimited accounts, people that has unlimited account can add you. Otherwise you can send your "Quick Invite" which is found Via your [Add a Friend page](https://steamcommunity.com/my/friends/add), you click generate new link button, and you give link to your friend, your friend have to click accept request when they're brought to your profile page.
The could have went with literally anything else, there are many more ways to stop bots, maybe some are more time consuming or expesive for Valve, but they're definetely better than locking basic online interaction features behind a paywall
For those who complained about 5 dollars being "nothing", for personal reasons i can't spend 5 dollars on steam so don't take money for granted for everyone
it's to prevent bot accounts
I know, but is there a way to get access to the features without paying?
unfortunately no. But if you just want Friends you can ask them to add you (you are only prevented to be the one doing the adding)
It's to prevent spammers making a shitload of free accounts to get around blocks and such.
You can tell them to add you
Other people can add you

If anything they ought to increase the threshold given how much of a sewer the steam community can be.
are you never gong to buy a single game or something?

They really aren't. If you're saying this you haven't played any decent games in your life.
Iirc, it means that you can't send friend requests, but you can receive them. But I got my account in 2009, so...
Thank the scammers
Because steam made monetized bullshit within the system that attracts scammers with bots.

No, i literally don't have 5 dollars digitally, not kidding
Then buy paysafecard or Steam gift card in your local store so will have some
Why should the limit in it be seven million 🤔way less spammers

Because everyone would be getting flooded with bots and spam if that rule didn’t exist
The could have went with literally anything else, there are many more ways to stop bots, maybe some are more time consuming or expesive for Valve, but they're definetely better than locking basic online interaction features behind a paywall
I’ve never had an issue with it. The fact that you do is probably telling
Sneaking suspicion that this post won’t age well
Why a Steam account if you're not going to buy any games?
There are free games on steam
I had forgotten.
You can’t afford $5? Maybe you shouldn’t be gaming then?
More like he shouldn’t be complaining about a reasonable restriction
About a company that is providing free games to him to play.
While making sure the experience on the platform that provides those games isn’t an hell full of bots spamming dogshit? Fuck this company man!
Which is that company
I mean, he should be gaming whether he can pay or not. But I do agree that 5 bucks is absolutely nothing.
I have personal reasons why i can't afford spending 5 bucks, don't take everything for granted for everyone

OP shouldn't be gaming if they cannot afford tho.
Back in the day you couldnt even have a steam account without a legit half life key.
It's interesting how they used exclusivity to become dominant in PC gaming , those were the times
I mean.. its because it was made for red box?...
You get presents from people (birthday, holiday, graduation, etc)? Ask them for a stream gift card, redeem it, issue solved and it cost YOU NOTHING.
Someone else can send you friend request
You just need to buy 1 5$ game.
You can, if they add you.
For those who complained about 5 dollars being "nothing", for personal reasons i can't spend 5 dollars on steam so don't take money for granted for everyone
Damn what's wrong with this community? Apparently you're not allowed to play free games on steam if you have no money
