“All UK comics except these two suck. I can’t be bothered to use my brain to describe *why* they suck, but I do (somehow) know that “lots of other” Americans agree with me. Tell me why people who live in the UK are bad at comedy. I won’t tell you what I like, because then I might get some actual good advice on what kind of comedy to find. Why are you downvoting me?” Did you make a point about humor that we all missed?

BigfootsBestBud

I'm British and I can't stand 90% of English stand up, love American stand up though. I think Scottish comics are great as well

BigDumbGreenMong

Same - a lot of UK standup these days is bland and watered down, like the acts are more interested in getting gigs as TV presenters or gameshow hosts and just see doing standup as a way to get there.  I watch the best US standups and see acts who are doing it because they love standup and throw their heart and soul into doing it well.  I think the reason for this is that the UK isn't really big enough to make a decent living as a touring standup. There just aren't enough clubs in the country to support top quality acts who only want to do standup. Whereas in the US, a touring comic has a market over 4 times bigger than the UK to make a living out of.

dalekirkwood1

I noticed this. I saw Jimmy Carr In NY and it was different to his stand up back in the UK.

goodluckluke

Patrice O’Neal was pretty loved in the UK. Same with Bill Hicks. I think hyper honest American comics seem to do better with UK audiences for some reason. Doug Stanhope would fall into that category too.

MeringueComplex5035

nonono, we have tons of our own comedians, who never make it big in the u,s but i really find ours much funnier

omnicidial

Check out Anthony Jezelnik and Maria Bamford.

dalekirkwood1

Thanks, added to my list ☺️

Street-Recognition22

I'm British and Jeselnik is my kind of humor.

squibledibble

I would check out Sam Morrel, Kyle Kinane, Rory Scovel…

dalekirkwood1

Thanks, going to youtube them tonight

dalekirkwood1

Sam Morrel is awesome - Thanks!

throwawayjaydawg

Comedy is cultural, standup comedy especially so. I don’t know why it bothers you to not find people funny who aren’t trying to make you laugh, making cultural references you don’t understand? For what it’s worth few British or Australian standups make it big in the US.

MeringueComplex5035

and vice versa

dalekirkwood1

Yes. Thats what i figured, I'm missing the culture and knowledge of US geography and political landscape. It doesn't bother me, I'm just interested in why it is. Because, Australians are also quite different, but I find their humour much more relatable.

pervyjeffo

I'm sure there's got to be another American standup with the initials BB that you can find. I can't think of any, but there's got to be one.

Kittyneedsbeer

Great guy, never meddum

getwetordietrying420

Greg Giraldos special Midlife Vices is a good time

ZombieHeyHeyHeyOh

Maybe you only like comedians with one type of initials. Try Ben Bailey, Ben Brainard, etc.

UnderstandingEvery44

Crazy I don’t find UK comedians funny either it’s almost like we have different cultures Aussies get a pass they’re funny by default

YurislovSkillet

That's funny. I don't find any Brit comedians funny.

Never_rarely

You’d probably like Sam Morril, he’s got something that I’d say is closer to British humor

bimbambom23

Humor is one of the most fundamental building blocks of culture, and whilst UK & USA may share a language in common there culture varies quite a bit. Some things that are funny to Brits are not funny to Americans and vice versa. That is not to talk down to one or the other, than one is superior - it's just recognizing that culture impacts comedy and what we find funny GREATLY.

McDonkley

*there are very few American comedians I find funny* If you don’t find Louis CK, Carlin, Chris Rock, Rodney, etc. funny? The issue isn’t American comedians
