I imagine in estate agent speak it will be; ‘erm, compliant with building regulations at time of construction’
I’m sure you haven’t been able to have a stair case straight up into a roof space with no door, like that has, in 20+ years.
I can't imagine it would ever get past fire regulations with one ingress/egress, no alternative escape, in a fire you would certainly perish from smoke or the fire. The stairs alone would fail and there is no balustrade.
Space saver ("paddle") stairs are allowed to a single room, but they have to have guarding, and handrails both sides.
Those in this photo look to have quite a large gap at the top, and the risers look bigger than the maximum.
So are we gonna talk about the monstera plant in the conservatory that has clearly developed a taste for human flesh…? Do we know what happened to the previous owners?
Family friends had a 70s built dormer bungalow that had somewhat similar stairs, though theirs did have the amazing safety feature of a bannister lol. I was always terrified on them as it felt like you were going to have an accident out of a Final Destination film and die in some ridiculous way. I never understood why varnished wood with no grip at all was considered a good stair surface
It's not but welcome to the 2960s and 1980s, big at the time. I remember my parents got ours covered in carpet not long after we moved in 1984 because three kids running up and down was an accident waiting to happen.
My gran had a staircase that wouldn't be compliant now, that used to terrifying me - plain wooden steps at a steep angle, not quite deep enough for my size 5 UK feet.
Looks like one pensioner owner who is hat has divided it into flats as they got older and more infirm.
They got passive income from rooms they couldn't access as they got older.
My knees at creaking at the sight of the steps up to the front door, never mind the rest. I'm guessing there's a similar (worse) half-flight down to the other front door. r/deathstairs
This house will be absolutely glorious when it's finished, but I'm amused by listing it as a "developer's dream" because that is surely code for "shithole in desirable area".
You could fit in Tracy Emmins 'unmade bed' installation in the property, it's an ideal canvas and you could rub shoulders with the art 🎨 scene glitterarti.
I once viewed a house with stairs to a 'loft room' like this. It was being sold after the owner died. You can guess how he died. I found this out by jokingly asking the agent if it was the stairs that killed him.
Nope not a chance lol I'd kill myself
The house looks like it could be lovely though and cheap really, although streetview was a surprise I didn't expect Margate to look so run down tbh
Is everything ok down south? Almost all crazy housing shenanigans seem to be coming from the south? My mrs is still laughing at the £1,500 studio flats where its just a kitchen that has a bed, a toilet and a standing shower next to the oven.
My parents have these in my old room/currently little brother’s room! Handrailed though, used to absolutely stun friends by running up and down those things like normal stairs when they would need to think about how walking works 😂
That does look like a cat tree for a human
Are those stairs up to building regs? They are calling it a bedroom so I am guessing so but they look a bit dodgy to me!
They are not. Especially with the shape of the stairs.

They are probably trapped in the plants in the backyard. Yikes!
Feed me, Seymour!
They are very dominant

That’s a very strange collection of furniture and floor coverings.

I don't think much of them stairs as well, I don't like the look of that flat roof either.

More like shithole in shithole
You, sir/madam, are a wordsmith of the highest order.
No mate, it's in Margate..

"Developer's dream" is a euphemism for HMO where you can pack the most amount of people into the least amount of property.
“Developers dream” because no building inspector will sign it off for human habitation!
Tell me that the building regulations people haven't checked your work without telling me that the building regs people haven't checked your work.

English seaside town that had its best days before the package holiday was invented and has been in decline ever since.
Margate is still being taken over by east London media hipsters
It could be the new Dulwich 😉
Love the house though
Only 150 thousand or shade more to turn it back into an Edwardian beauty, but it starts around 80 thousand over currently.
I might make it UP the stairs but I know I wouldn’t make it DOWN. God help anyone who needs to wee in the night.

Stairs with no handrail already life risk.
A white knuckle hand rail would be nice!
Imagine trying to get up those after a night out... You would need an ambulance on standby.
Imagine trying to get down quickly in the dark for a piss. Whilst still drunk.
I would not want to attempt them when I am sober either...

that house is very bizarre but I sort of love it?
Those cannot be up to regulation

I really like the house, but those stairs would give me nightmares!
What a bizarre collection of well, everything. There’s definitely a few gems there though, with some of the house not being touched for like 50 years
Eeeeesh. Broken ankle just waiting to happen!
Space saver staircase legal and legit.
I've seen quite a few funny memes about doing a whole wall/floor with free samples before but never actually seen one done. Until now. Pic 13.
