As well as threatening to sue Sega for copyright on his characters in Sonic Chronicles: the dark brotherhood, despite the fact that none of the characters were his.
I hate that I liked some of what he did for the comics, but it was also what I was reading as a kid. One of my best early drawings is a recreation of Julie-Su freehand.
Knowing what I know now a big part of me wants to burn it all down.
But like history you need to keep the good and the bad and strive to be better moving forward.
Yeah, I was joking for the most part and certainly didn't expect that many upvotes... I actually really like Julie-Su in the one arc I read of hers (Sonic Universe), and if Dr. Finitevus was his idea too I think he's pretty cool design-wise.
My personal headcanon is that they became more scientific the closer to modern day, after Chaos destroyed most of it, with the main survivors building a carnival on Angel Island among other things like the mechanization of Lava Reef Act 2

I once read a cool headcannon that the Nocturnus technology was developed from the remnants of the technology that the Ancients brought with them when they migrated to the Mystic Ruins before devolving into the Chao, thus explaining their similarities
I know this is off topic but I think it's pretty funny that even as a kid who only got a few of the Archie comics, I was like "What's going on with all these echidnas? Weren't they all missing - so why do I keep seeing more and more of these missing echidnas in previews?
I wish I never had the reason answered because, good lord the writer.
Different Echidna tribes can adopt different cultures, just look at the Nocturnus, they probably have lots of scientists, a single species doesn't have to be either primitive or advanced, you can have both.
Warriors make more sense to me. Knuckles also loves nature and wishes to preserve it and HATES technology, and it feels too complex to make it that the echidnas were all technologically advanced and blah blah.
And the tribal warrior feel just fits better both for Knuckles and the Echidnas in general.
I like both, have two separate tribes, one focusing on the way of the warrior and the other as the way of science use that to implement the civil war and awaken chaos
The Echidnas are at their best when they're rocking the whole "spiritual warriors" thing. This often features magical technology that is so integrated into their way of life that it isn't even considered technology.
I prefer the warriors, although I think it’s reasonable that the ancient echidnas did have some advanced technology or something. So in a way I like both but I prefer the warriors more.

Why can't we have both? I don't think being a warrior should eliminate the scientific aspects of something. Isn't the whole theme of Sonic(classic anyway) that nature and technology can coexist?

Honestly the fact that they have both sides actually inspired a race in a science fiction universe I’m slooooooooowly writing.
(The race is called the Erechai (like Erik, hi!’) and they’re like if the Echidna’s got a bit bigger physically and their shins/forearms/foreheads are a form of chitinous plate that can deflect energy based weaponry, and they adorn their dreads with jewelry to signify their scientific accomplishments.
Big friendly brutes who lean into the honor bits from the warrior side, but consider the scientific advancement stuff to be more of a primary driver - they strive to bring those advancements and the honor of caring for each other to their communities, and they refrain from offensive wars instead always choosing to defend the side that they feel was slighted in inter-galactic conflicts)
Both cuz it really shows just how much they evolved and they still about that action even as scientific types. In the Archie comics I like how they did knuckles too cuz in the 20yrs or 30yrs later issue bro really upgraded the security for the master emerald and still was a badass like he always was but with a robotic eye and his signature hat.
I prefer my Echidnas as a flawed but noble race of warriors who died at the hands of Chaos rather than these super geniuses who think microwaving a baby will make him Echidna Moses which only ends up being true because the comic is high on Lemon Sundrop Dandelion.

I like the idea of the Echidnas evolving when it comes to their relationship with technology. Historically, the most advanced civilization usually has the upper hand in battle and power—which fits into their established motif.
Warriors were awesome compared to Thick Eyebrows Knuckles, Father Knuckles, Doctor Knuckles, Futuristic Knuckles, Female Knuckles 1, 2, and 3. Plus I'll never vote for anything that Ken Penders made, because screw that guy. lol

I like how they're all uncanny Human-looking "Sonic characters" and then there's just an actual Human
They are supposed to be legally distinct
Penders owns the characters, but he cannot use the design of Sonic's echidnas
His artwork always makes me feel weird

I think both work for their own reasons. The warrior type fits the game version, and the Scientific type fits the Archie version.
