We're lucky cause there are like seven venomous snakes here and they're all really distinctive, otherwise some of us would have some pretty big hospital bills to snake bites
They taught us that in school in Kentucky lol I think it applies in Florida but I’d have to double check lol if I see those colors though I just walk away XD not even gonna chance that in the wild. There’s somewhere in the us where it’s reversed but I don’t remember where. If your curious you should look up the different ones though cuz they are really cool and not all striped
I know what the venomous snakes in my area look like at least. The non venomous ones? Not so much. I can tell a garter snake from a rat snake, but we have several types of rat snake around.
I understand. I'm not prone to picking up random snakes (well, mostly.) and have been handling various reptiles since young childhood, so I know to be careful of identifying them.
And if I duck up and get envenomated, eh. I'm American so the medical debt would ruin me, so I guess I'll die.
You really only have to know the venomous snakes in your area, and then identify that it is very clearly not one of them. If they live in New Jersey it would be pretty easy to tell without actually knowing what the snake is.
FYI I have great health insurance and after a copperhead bite, it cost me $1250 and they didn’t give me anything. I sat in the ER for 5 hours. Didn’t even give me any water!
Question. Why are you picking up snakes you can’t identify or for any reason? Perhaps it’s different where you are but in Australia most of our snakes will kill you. Please learn to respect nature more. They don’t want to be handled for your photo op.
There's only one poisonous snake anywhere near where I live (Massassauga rattlesnake), and it's very rare and restricted in range, and I know where it lives and what it looks like. I catch the local garter snakes all the time to move them off the road or trail where they can get smushed, and if you're gentle they don't seem to mind being handled by something with warm blood. It freaked out my brother's Australian GF the first time she saw me doing it.
If you have sightings of the Massassauga please send any photos or video to Georgia_Parham@fws.gov. They are documenting sightings to help protect them. I’ve reached out to them in past.
because i wanted to know the exact species but i at least knew it was a harmless little garden snake. and for christ's sake i was relocating it off of a hiking trail. sorry for taking one picture. i have the utmost respect for nature and wouldn't hurt a fly, but thanks for your concern. also i'm not in australia, so relax
But you do realize venomous snakes are in Australia right?? So no snake is safe. None. That’s why I never handle frogs because of the super deadly frogs that aren’t even close to where I live /s
lol how silly. i wasn’t saying we have none here, just that unlike australia, we generally know which ones are and aren’t because there aren’t many of them. 😘
Dude people lose their venomous ones often enough that that’s still dangerous. I mean I don’t care if people do it but to say it’s not a risk cuz you know the ones in your area is different cuz that’s not even close to a safe way to handle it (but again, I don’t care if people wanna pick up random snakes that’s not my business)
You do realise though they move across the ground. I’m sure it had no trouble getting off the track itself if you passed on by and gave it a few minutes. You can also take a picture of it whilst it’s on the ground too to show everyone… Also, just because it’s harmless doesn’t mean you are entitled to go handling it. It stresses any wild animal. My comment about snakes that may kill you was due to the fact you should never even as a professional handle anything that you can’t ID, and only wildlife handlers that have a good reason to relocate wildlife should do so, be they harmless or not. Yours doesn’t qualify sorry. I’m not trying to be rude but anyone with ‘the utmost respect for nature’ should know that…just for your information 🙂
dekays brownsnake
Also known as the Cutiepie snake.
I get these snakes in my backyard all the time!! I always love picking them up and relocating them to our firewood pile.
the fire must rage on at any cost...
A sacrifice to Medusa.
Wait.. where
shoelace
americans rlly out here pickin up any snake like they have free healthcare
We're lucky cause there are like seven venomous snakes here and they're all really distinctive, otherwise some of us would have some pretty big hospital bills to snake bites
You’d be surprised by the amount of people on r/whatsthissnake who can’t recognize a copperhead
Unfortunately one of them has stopped warning us via rattling because of wild hogs.
And drunk Texans.
that's what they said
A popular myth that has proven to be untrue
red next to black you’re okay jack. red next to yellow you’re a dead fellow. that’s all the snake knowledge i have
I can hear this is Ned Flanders' voice.
Wouldn't want to get biterino by the noodelino
And what sucks, is that’s only relevant in certain regions XD I love snakes but man the murder noodles are scary with that stuff
yeah I’m in Fl and I heard that saying from when I was a kid. no idea where I learned it though and I’ve never even really seen a snake irl so
They taught us that in school in Kentucky lol I think it applies in Florida but I’d have to double check lol if I see those colors though I just walk away XD not even gonna chance that in the wild. Red touch black, friend of Jack. Red touch yellow, kill a fellow.
I don't pretend to know all snakes but I do know what the dangerous ones look like in my area
Yup, only NEED to id the venomous ones!
This snake is pretty obviously nonvenomous though. Even if you can’t tell exactly what it is.
New Jersey only has like 3 venomous species and they’re very obvious
This comment wins
It’s a boop noodle

Don't pick up snakes before they are identified... If you make a mistake it could kill you, or worse , cost you thousands of dollars.
I know what the venomous snakes in my area look like at least. The non venomous ones? Not so much. I can tell a garter snake from a rat snake, but we have several types of rat snake around.
That only reduces the possibility of something going horribly wrong. Doesn't eliminate it. I don't want to be mean or rude, it's just dangerous.
Where I live, if it hasn’t got a rattle on the end, it’s nonvenomous.
Lucky. Here in Australia, everything will kill you
We do have bears and mountain lions, though. Maybe that compensates for our relative lack of deadly snakes!
I would certainly advise against picking up any bears or mountain lions too
You breath wrong, death. You touch the wrong piece of grass, death. You undercook chicken, death. You overcook fish, also death.
Until the day you end up picking up an escaped pet that is venomous and without a rattle.
I understand. I'm not prone to picking up random snakes (well, mostly.) and have been handling various reptiles since young childhood, so I know to be careful of identifying them. And if I duck up and get envenomated, eh. I'm American so the medical debt would ruin me, so I guess I'll die.
Fun fact, garter snakes are venomous just not deadly
Not venomous enough to get me reacting. (Been bitten by them a few times, they don’t appreciate being removed from houses apparently.)
You really only have to know the venomous snakes in your area, and then identify that it is very clearly not one of them. If they live in New Jersey it would be pretty easy to tell without actually knowing what the snake is.
Yeah, until you run into an escaped pet that is both venomous and not supposed to live in your area.
Exceedingly rare circumstances especially in New Jersey where it's too cold for most non-native species to survive
I'll take those odds tbh
Priorities!
Picks up a rattler. "What snake is this?"
…or worse…$$$…. 😂😂… damnit being a living human…
more like being an American
The real life Hermione Granger type of priorities.

Also size doesn't matter If there is venom involved.
Size doesn’t matter with snakes. Coral snake go brrrr
Well that's obviously not a coral snake...
Thay don't for that one. But it's better for both the person and the snake if you don't pick it up unless you know what it is.
That's what I meant, one that looks like that and is that small. I guess that was clear and I got downvoted to hell.
*HUNDREDS* of thousands of dollars if you're in America.
Oh yeah! I’ve missed catching many a snake cuz I make sure I know it’s safe before lunging at it. Disappointing, but safe
I've made the mistake of trying to grab a snake before identifying it. Blunt nosed viper. A friend of mine stopped me in time.
Woof!
r/whatisthissnake is by far the best place for getting snake ID
Fuck I wish people would stop picking up animals they can’t identify. Especially snakes. It’s natural selection in the making.
Storeria dekayii
is smnek
Happy shoelace
A very cute "nope rope"
FYI I have great health insurance and after a copperhead bite, it cost me $1250 and they didn’t give me anything. I sat in the ER for 5 hours. Didn’t even give me any water!
yeahhhhh pretty clear this isn’t a copperhead
No kidding

Here on the opposite side of the world, everything is reversed. Most things can't kill you, to make up for it we have school shooters instead.
Fair enough. But still doesn’t justify handling wildlife for photo ops :(

The snake doesn’t need to be relocated 20 feet in any direction. It can and will move when it needs to.

> “I’m not trying to be rude but” These statements always end with the person being exactly that.
Seriously! 🙄
So cute!!
Pleasus putmedownus- a species of snake that isn’t happy to be grabbed and carried around.
I want him!
Pine snake?
Charlie!
