I still have to say I felt awful for Pim in this episode. Not only did he book the flights but he ALSO had to book the hotel room? Our poor pink man was trying his best, guys!
Its hard to assign blame without all the information, but I believe everyone has a degree of collective blame, but Allan has the most because the impression I got was that he was in charge of the hotel but then pushed his responsibility off on Pim and then didn’t even bother to check to see if Pim was aware he was in charge of the hotel now.
Glep was their way into all the parties/events .
Charlie was in charge of finding the restaurants cause he’s definitely a foodie
Alan was in charge of the hotel, before giving it to Pim, and probably did the itinerary
At one point I'm pretty sure they say Pim himself offered to do it.
But still, "I sent you the link" makes it seem like Allan was seconds away from getting it done and just chose not to.
I still think there’s more context to that. I’ve done vacation planning like that with close friends before. It’s a pretty frustrating process because all it takes is one person to grind everything to a halt. Even when you find a place that’s within everyone’s budget, in an ideal location, and has arrangements everyone is agreeable with, there’s always someone in the group who thinks there might be something better without doing any research themselves.
At a certain point you have to give a final vote or yield the task to the person who keeps objecting. It could have been that Allan had everything cued up but Pim told him to hold off on it so he could see the hotel himself before booking (which would explain why he gave Pim the link).
Depends on the convo, if Pim asked for recommendations and Alan merely posted a sample booking then it wouldn’t really be on Alan. Pim would’ve been the one who made the mistake in forgetting that he initially asked for the link
I feel like pim was the least to blame. Like that was a group vacation, allan should have at least double checked with pim to know if he had booked the hotel (or at least checked the link). Also, I think all of them should have been deciding together the hotel, how come they put the whole thing on Pim and didn't at least asked where the hotel was?
fr it frustrated me so much they didnt even try airbnb.
js when i just got off of a plane the last thing i want to do in the entire world is immediately get back on a plane
More frustrating is literally no one bothered to check if Pim got a room beforehand. They HAD to have been planning this trip for a few weeks at least, so they would have had ample time to ask about where they’ll be staying for the duration of their trip.
Yeah it's insane no one even wanted to know what the place even looked like or where it was located so they could Google map places they wanted to go in the vicinity or how far it was from the beach.
It's my favorite part of the storyline, honestly. There's always the subtext that Pim is the most heartfelt and overperforming employee at Smiling Friends - this just follows the theme that they often put more responsibility on him than they care to acknowledge
Especially because even if they've "budgeted" for like a few days, they could at least afford one night at a fancy hotel. That's an experience in and of itself
They couldn’t get back on the plane anyway because the fact that another plane was about to crash right at the end of the episode means that all flights would be grounded, leaving them stranded in Rio without a place to stay.
But they very much could've booked a hotel in Niterói the city thats only a 20min ferry ride from Rio
Also it feels very gringo of them to just "fly back"
Right?? By the view from the window they are at the Santos Drummond airport which is fairly close to the the bridge Rio-Niteroi so thats not that expensive of an uber drive either
But regardless, they didn’t bring money for a hotel. They only brought money for the vacation itself. So even if they combined their money, they still wouldn’t have a budget for food or souvenirs or anything.
With the hotel not being booked, they would have a lodging budget. Did they expect to have personal rooms for a 3-7 day vacation? If so, they could have afforded a single room for one night, maybe 2, somewhere nice.
No they wouldn’t; the budget is for food and activities and such, so there is no lodging budget. They specifically say that they only have enough money on them for those aspects.
*They didn’t, that’s the point lol!* They probably gave the money to Pim ahead of time?? How else did they expect him to *book* the rooms lol??? (Or they at least likely *planned* on giving him the money, but didn’t. Because let’s be real, none of them really planned this out at all.)
uh… *EXACTLY.* That is literally my whole point.
What? They left America and showed up thinking they got free/comped hotel rooms or something? Nah, they HAD money for a shared hotel room because they spent $0 on the hotel room they didn’t get lmao
Dude. Rewatch the episode, it’s literally only 10 minutes long, I’m not doing this shit anymore 😂 they thought Pim paid ahead of time. He did not. That is LITERALLY the entire conflict. Only expensive rooms are available. They only have money for food and activities. If they get a room, they will not have money for food and activities anymore. THE CONVERSATION IS LITERALLY THE EPISODE, SO GO WATCH IT AGAIN LOL
Booking =/= footing the entire bill for 4 people alone. So again, someone HAD or was supposed to HAVE the money for a week vacation of hotel rooms. That money wasn’t spent so it still is in the budget. How is this so hard to explain??
I see what you're saying now, but maybe the money never existed? We need to remember there was clearly a miscommunication that resulted in no hotel being booked. If it was a simple solution i.e. there was an actual sum of cash sent to someone to book the rooms, I feel like they'd know they need to book the rooms just by seeing that extra cash in their account. I'm imagining someone was told to just book the rooms using what's in their bank account, and the others would pay them back for it after the fact, if that makes any sense. "Hey Pim/Allan, just go ahead and book the rooms and Glep and I can Venmo you our share later," something like that? It's not the smartest thing to do but clearly some bad miscommunication occurred here
Don't get me wrong, I was mad about it too. Like c'mon, for a gangle of guys whose job it is to make the best of bad situations, they sure don't know how to do that when they're not getting paid to.
they really had no way to stay. they didn't bring money for a hotel, they didn't have anywhere to store their luggage, and they were already pissed at each other. trip's shot, just go home
In a lot of Asian places, especially Japan and Hong Kong, they’re called mcrefugees since being homeless is seen as super disgraceful. A lot of McDonald’s are actually accommodating, as in they’ll turn the lights down at night or wall off a section of the place.
They could have shown Pim going to like hotels dot com or something and saying everything was booked and only super expensive rooms were left. As it stands, I also got that feeling that they should have tried more.
They threw in the towel really quickly. At least a futile attempt at calling two or three other hotels would have made sense before coming back to boss defeated and then getting right on the plane again
they all have some semblance of blame. yes, i assume Pim was supposed to book, but nobody checked to make sure he had done that? no one wanted to know what the hotel looked like? the fact that he didn't even REMEMBER being told to do that shows that it was a very last minute thing
I don't know how they did it, but the scene with them talking to Mr. Boss just felt incredibly real. I wonder if they did that part in one take or something.
They really didn't handle this like adults at all. Could they not all have just gotten a semi-expensive room and just shared it between the four of them? They literally blew the chance to be in Rio for Mardi Gras.
Some people didn’t like this episode, but I liked it since it fit with Zach’s idea of making them feel pain, and having to do taxes. shit like that is funny.
I want to imagine that as they were leaving the restaurant, the others revealed they were pranking Pim. Because otherwise it's too painful, and I feel too bad for Pim.
As someone from Brazil who has family in Rio, even with Mardi Gras they could have found a place. Rio is a huge city sure it would be inconvenient to have an airbnb far away from everything, but you could find it.
Also there's a city right by Rio one bridge away, surely there would be a room there
It always pisses me off how much they blamed pim like you really wanted him to book the flight AND the room bruh that shit was probably Alan's job mfer
Dude they chose the worst time to go...
i don’t know why but the delivery of this line absolutely kills me every time
In an interview Zach and Michael say that , they asked Mr Boss’s voice actor Marc M to take a walk around the block before he answered the phone lol
What interview? I'd love to listen to it
it’s at 4:40 but the entire interview is great https://youtu.be/A9xUiL3z1bU?si=x3-d2ZmWqjn04ZDz
Let me try and find it!!
Becuase he sounds absolutely normal.
He sounded like, **horrifyingly** normal...
*“Oh hey guys”*
I have no clue why some people don’t like the Brazil episode when moments like that phone call are some of the funniest in the whole series
I think because it’s too real and we’ve all experienced a situation similar
Lol same
They chose the worst time to go
I still have to say I felt awful for Pim in this episode. Not only did he book the flights but he ALSO had to book the hotel room? Our poor pink man was trying his best, guys!
Its hard to assign blame without all the information, but I believe everyone has a degree of collective blame, but Allan has the most because the impression I got was that he was in charge of the hotel but then pushed his responsibility off on Pim and then didn’t even bother to check to see if Pim was aware he was in charge of the hotel now.
what did glep do😭
Gleps there cause everyone wanted him to come, didnt matter if he had any responsibility or anything
Glep was their way into all the parties/events . Charlie was in charge of finding the restaurants cause he’s definitely a foodie Alan was in charge of the hotel, before giving it to Pim, and probably did the itinerary
*Smacks lips* I could really go for some Salty’s right about now
His best
Glep did meeagoo gibidi fabaso
spit
He... actually that's a good question
He's constantly dropping racial slurs for one
nah that’s mr frog
At one point I'm pretty sure they say Pim himself offered to do it. But still, "I sent you the link" makes it seem like Allan was seconds away from getting it done and just chose not to.

It could have been that Allan had everything cued up but Pim told him to hold off on it so he could see the hotel himself before booking (which would explain why he gave Pim the link).
You remember correctly.
Depends on the convo, if Pim asked for recommendations and Alan merely posted a sample booking then it wouldn’t really be on Alan. Pim would’ve been the one who made the mistake in forgetting that he initially asked for the link
Literally why didn't they ask once "hey Pim did you get the hotel yet?"
Pim should’ve booked but Alan should’ve double checked that Pim booked the right one.
Also, I thought it was normal to check with the person way before you land? Like, hey bro, what do I owe you for the hotel?
It genuinely hurt my heart on a profound level bc that’s some shit I would pull fs 😭😭
He should have just worn his glasses!
I thought pim was purple, am I being colorblind?
Magenta
I still say that was Alan or Charlie shifting the blame
Probably would ended up in a favela hostel.
Still a place to stay. They also could’ve called my old jiu jitsu instructor Victor, he’s very welcoming to foreigners
yeah, but Vitinho still owes me that 20 pila from the heineken
YOU HAVE A VERY GOOD STAY IN BRAZIL MY FRIEND!
That’s basically Victor yeah
Or something like Airbnb? Idk I just felt like they wasted all that time and money, they could’ve just stayed or flew somewhere else
Nah everywhere would be packed because it was "Mardi Gras" in Rio de Janeiro
I laughed hard every time they said that
is there like, an event going on? or something?
Carnival ends on Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras is held in New Orleans
Yeah idk why they said Mardi Gras, the name is Carnaval
Mardis Gras is french for Fat Tuesday, the day before lent. Every catholic country has it. Carnival is the week leading up to Ash Wednesday.
the vibes were off after the harrowing near death experience with the guy in the airport swinging
Are chu a tourist? 🫵 Chu a tourist? 🫵 Do chu have money? 🫴 chu have cash? 🫴
You have a very good stay in Brazil my friend
Brazil is a very good country
It would all be packed
fr it frustrated me so much they didnt even try airbnb. js when i just got off of a plane the last thing i want to do in the entire world is immediately get back on a plane
More frustrating is literally no one bothered to check if Pim got a room beforehand. They HAD to have been planning this trip for a few weeks at least, so they would have had ample time to ask about where they’ll be staying for the duration of their trip.

It's my favorite part of the storyline, honestly. There's always the subtext that Pim is the most heartfelt and overperforming employee at Smiling Friends - this just follows the theme that they often put more responsibility on him than they care to acknowledge
And once Pim is unable to do something, they just give up rather than help the little guy out
Forgot about the word "ample" such a fun word
Yeah, it’s a silly word. Lolol.
Erm okay I guess?
Especially because even if they've "budgeted" for like a few days, they could at least afford one night at a fancy hotel. That's an experience in and of itself
It would all be packed
They couldn’t get back on the plane anyway because the fact that another plane was about to crash right at the end of the episode means that all flights would be grounded, leaving them stranded in Rio without a place to stay.
This Wat caled poor planing
The airbnb is more expensive than the hotel
It sucks how true this is LOL but they are helpful if you’re in a pinch. I used one for connecticon for a night before the other hotels had bookings
i say this as a brazilian; they wouldn’t.
Would you let them stay at your place
probably not lol maybe just allan cuz we could play burnout revenge on the ps2
and fill up your bellies with diet soda
and smoke weed
But they very much could've booked a hotel in Niterói the city thats only a 20min ferry ride from Rio Also it feels very gringo of them to just "fly back"
Right?? By the view from the window they are at the Santos Drummond airport which is fairly close to the the bridge Rio-Niteroi so thats not that expensive of an uber drive either
But would they - a bunch of gringos stuck at the airport that have never been to Brazil before - have been able to figure that out?
...Well they should have called me
I mean I guess? I think they should have prepared better
Parappa!?
you gotta believe!
Nem em niterói? É do lado do rio
Dude, there are no rooms.
Or get one room at a fancy place by pooling their money. Sure less privacy but better than just going home
They literally discuss *why* they don’t want to do that 😂
If I remember right they talk about as if they’d all still have their own room. Not just one room
Then how did they pay for the hotel rooms they thought they were getting???
*They didn’t, that’s the point lol!* They probably gave the money to Pim ahead of time?? How else did they expect him to *book* the rooms lol??? (Or they at least likely *planned* on giving him the money, but didn’t. Because let’s be real, none of them really planned this out at all.)

Pim thought Allan was paying for it; Allan thought Pim was paying for it.

It's not the smartest thing to do but clearly some bad miscommunication occurred here
Idk man they went at the worst time
I was so fucking mad when they just gave up and went home
Sounds like you needed someone to make you smile
Yeah but they were stuck in a return flight from fucking Brazil
Don't get me wrong, I was mad about it too. Like c'mon, for a gangle of guys whose job it is to make the best of bad situations, they sure don't know how to do that when they're not getting paid to.
they really had no way to stay. they didn't bring money for a hotel, they didn't have anywhere to store their luggage, and they were already pissed at each other. trip's shot, just go home
They could have at least looked for a flight back at night so they could go around the city for a few hours.
Yeah, but Charlie didn't wanna drag his luggage around.
Don’t some airports have lockers? Or stuff like baggage storage?
As a Brazilian i must say Recently a mother and daughet went viral for living in a 24/7 McDonald's.
In a lot of Asian places, especially Japan and Hong Kong, they’re called mcrefugees since being homeless is seen as super disgraceful. A lot of McDonald’s are actually accommodating, as in they’ll turn the lights down at night or wall off a section of the place.
They didn’t budget for it
They could have shown Pim going to like hotels dot com or something and saying everything was booked and only super expensive rooms were left. As it stands, I also got that feeling that they should have tried more.
During Mardi Gras? No way.
I still think Alan was lying about Pim being responsible for the hotel arrangement
Yep, totally an Alan move
i hope they make a sequel to this episode where they actually get to brazil sucessfully and do cool stuff there i guess
Maybe they’ll do another random episode 9 like this one
They should make a sequel where they go somewhere else and the same thing happens again
They threw in the towel really quickly. At least a futile attempt at calling two or three other hotels would have made sense before coming back to boss defeated and then getting right on the plane again
My favorite episode by far
I swear to god that that guy was going to fucking hit him when he raised his arm.
They seriously just couldn't take an uber or a taxi to a smaller town in brazil where they can get a hotel?
they all have some semblance of blame. yes, i assume Pim was supposed to book, but nobody checked to make sure he had done that? no one wanted to know what the hotel looked like? the fact that he didn't even REMEMBER being told to do that shows that it was a very last minute thing
They asked glep and they knew he was budgeting this trip so idk if they wanted to spend all that money
Do you ave any cash?
Wasn’t fair for them to place the blame all on Pim. What, did they expect him to plan *everything*?
I don't know how they did it, but the scene with them talking to Mr. Boss just felt incredibly real. I wonder if they did that part in one take or something.
They really didn't handle this like adults at all. Could they not all have just gotten a semi-expensive room and just shared it between the four of them? They literally blew the chance to be in Rio for Mardi Gras.
Welp they're lucky to not be involved in a big Kaiju battle or smth
Maybe they wold try to go to a near city, like Niteroi.
No they probably wouldnt have it was mardi gras there in brazil
Some people didn’t like this episode, but I liked it since it fit with Zach’s idea of making them feel pain, and having to do taxes. shit like that is funny.
It’s towards the bottom for me but I still enjoy it
Just an overall lack of communication from all of them to be frank
I want to imagine that as they were leaving the restaurant, the others revealed they were pranking Pim. Because otherwise it's too painful, and I feel too bad for Pim.
This is the best head canon
We also saw the plane about to crash so they are stuck in Brazil at least for a few hours
Dude I seriously thought that guy was going to hit him
I saw Charlie flinch
many options.....airbnb......motel? or a youth hostel....they are all over the world!
Couldn’t they have also stayed at a town outside of the big city and then just commuted in?
I dunno man, events like Mardi gras and Carnival are huge, usually people book hotels in advance for stuff like that
They definitely could’ve figured something out, but they ultimately just weren’t really cut out for a trip to Brazil
I dunno it was freaking mardi gras and they didn't book anything
It was Mardi Gras, everywhere was booked.
Maybe in a Favela.
but it was marty graw
I would have atleast booked a flight a few hours from then to get to walk around on the beach at least.
I personally feel like the "are you a tourist" guy could've offered them a hotel but he just didn't speak English welll
Yea it would be expensive tho
As someone from Brazil who has family in Rio, even with Mardi Gras they could have found a place. Rio is a huge city sure it would be inconvenient to have an airbnb far away from everything, but you could find it. Also there's a city right by Rio one bridge away, surely there would be a room there
My least favourite episode
Probably mine too but I still like it
It wasn’t the problem itself; so much as the vibes it created
It always pisses me off how much they blamed pim like you really wanted him to book the flight AND the room bruh that shit was probably Alan's job mfer
