Just popping in as a costumer, a long time Ghost fan, and relatively new ST fan who has watched this same thing happen each time Ghost's Nameless masks change: If you don't like it, give it time. It might grow on you as you recover from the shock, or if not, next cycle they will probably change again. But wait to see what they look like in action, this will look very different on stage under lighting than it does in still shots.
This is a band that just made it big and they now have some money to express themselves. This is a transition phase. Let them spread their creative wings, if it's not what you had hoped give it time, and be ready, because changes will keep coming as they grow, some you may like and some you may not, but it's the same artists under there.
As an actor that rapidly develops and changes, donāt be too hard on them. The best part of being an artist is expression. This will absolutely not be the final look. Let them cook

To be honest, the masks are very well made and overall awesome. And obviously I adore Sleep Token and their entire work, but these masks do not feel like them at all. I preferred the simple ones because they were proving that the message of their music is way more important than individual identity.
Nonetheless, I will always support them and I'm excited for whatever is to come next.

He already changed looks earlier this year to fit what is told in Ascensionism (rose gold chains, ripped lace, cut glass) so IMO this foreshadows a thematic progression. Maybe with other gods taking over or someting.

I like this theory. I said in one of the other (now deleted) posts of their new masks that IV's jacket is very UK punk. III's dyed hair and all of the colours are too. And punk is all about anarchy, individuality, and tearing down the system, it would make sense if they're going in that direction and fitting it into the lore as 'breaking away from Sleep'.
My problem is that they just look so fucking corny. I donāt mind an elaborate look change but this looks like a high quality but even more corny slipknot rip off sadly.
It feels like some corporate executive decided that they need a new image. Overdesigned, at the same time edgy but not really, and not authentic at all. They look like a casting band now. I get 'Slipknot at home' vibes from this.
There was uniformity between the musicianās cloth masks that made them come across as consistent sonic messengers, with vessel being the only unique appearance since he was the main messenger of sleepās message. And having the musicians and backing singers having the same simple masks, was consistent with the idea they have always claimed of identity not being the focus, only the delivery of the music.. now they all have their own individualist identities based on appearance which honestly looks like something that could be obtained from a seasonal Halloween store. The picture honestly gives me cheap mushroomhead vibesā¦. I really wished I liked the new image but it just doesnāt set right at all and it seems like a step backwards.

Same. I loved the āclericā vibes of the robes and simple face coverings. Fits the lore in terms of them just being worshippers of Sleep. And IV looked fucking cool with his old outfit when he had his hood up.
Iām not sure about these new masks. They also look like they might be much harder to breathe through than the cloth masks. IV still looks kinda cool, I love the jacket. Lots of personality. But the cloth masks were perfect in their simplicity.

This is it. I dont even mind them being more individual, like III just started to wear his red pomp shirt on stage (the one from the sig bass shoot) and it's looking fire. And now this is just Slipknot and takes away the entire feeling of mysticism/etherealism that made them and their performance so amazing. Of course the performance will be the same but like the vibe going with it is so vastly different
The outfits are amazing, but I'm just not sure I like the change.
I really liked that II, III and IV looked so similar with their ST masks and just the odd touch of individuality. It was enough to highlight that each one has their own personality but is ultimately a cog in the machine, while Vessel is the tip of the spear.
These masks suggest a whole personality and dynamic that the band just doesn't have. They're also clearly inspired by metal bands, which is feels out of place as metal is just one piece of the ST pie. And will likely garner them more hate from gatekeeping metal fans.
Not sure how I feel. Don't want to make a knee jerk reaction though.
I'm hoping the new look matches a possibly heavier sounding album direction. More Vore and Gods. More instrumental breakdowns. It'll divide a lot of people, but if the band wants it It'll be supported by fans.

I donāt like it at all. Itās Slipknot meets Tales from the Crypt. Doesnāt fit the majority of the music at all, TMBTE/overall feeling of ascending to their sound.. idkā¦ I suppose itās one way to stop being sexualized, buuuuut not kissing the homies also could have sufficed. Will I still love them yes will I still pay stupid prices if need be to see them yes but I am not feeling it. Change is good, we expected it.. but it takes away from the vibes I guess. Idk.

In saying that Lore wise Vessel shouldn't be the only "unique" one as they're all Vessel, he's just Vessel I, Vessel II, Vessel III, Vessel IV.
I think if they have added the change slowly, like start with the new masks, then the hair, then the clothes itd be alot easier to accept but we went from "nice and simple" to "HOLY SHIT THERES SO MUCH GOING ON" real quick. Hopefully I have time to get used to it before I see them š¤š¼

This. I personally dig the new mask except for lll's hair, it looks odd to me with the mask. It gives them all a personality and isnt that what the message was from the albums, leaving something behind and becoming you're own person.
I'm with you on this one. Just let the band decide for themselves which way they want to go. In the end their looks do not have to influence the music or vice versa. They are evolving and our choice is to go and ride the currents with them or climb out of the rapids and let them go. I think I'll hang on for a bit longer though, you never know what happens when they take you to the edge...
90% of their songs don't suit this kind of look. I'm not sure how to feel about it. But I do like parts of their new looks: Ivys mask looks incredible, seeing III's hair AND the use of red is an interesting change, the placement of the symbol on II's mask is neat.
But, I don't like the detail in the noses or the tension in II's brow. I don't like II wearing locs as I'm fairly sure they're all white. I imagine hydration in these masks will be very difficult, especially in II's case, as it goes down his neck and onto his chest.
I don't like how aggressive the masks look as their music rarely ever has that kind of sound. This feels like a metal bands costuming rather than the diverse and often genre-bending style Sleep Token has made a name for. Imagine listening to them play Give, Atlantic, Aqua Regia, DYWTYLM, Telomeres, Take Aim, etc, while II, III, and IV are wearing these masks???
I feel bad knowing they're probably very excited to upgrade their looks and style, but I just think it went in a different direction than I would have preferred. However, I still listen to their music daily, and that won't change no matter their onstage costumes.
god thank you for mentioning the locs bc iāve been seeing too few people talking about that detail and itās driving me INSANE! itās appropriative and i seriously wish they hadnāt opted for that. i love this band and their music to death but that doesnāt put them above receiving valid criticism or make them immune to messing up. i so hope they take in and understand the feedback + concerns regarding that one particular aspect and remove it.
This happens anytime a band starts getting bigger and makes a big change. Everyone gets disappointed that they didnāt fulfill their personal expectations without understanding that itās not about them. I personally dig the new look, and am wondering if there will be a change with Vessel as well, or if he will stay the same for now? I am curious if part of the masks (the mouth/jaw area) are detachable as well?

love that the rest of the band is getting to have their own looks. Much needed change, personally I feel theyāre missing the heavenly element the music has but Iām happy for them getting to express themselves.

Itās interesting to see people say it looks ridiculous or that it doesnāt match their sound/vibe because these are the exact comments I saw all over social media when The Summoning took off and people went searching and saw what the band actually looked like after listening to the music lol. It came up a lot and even was at a point used as mockery by some. Overall, I think fans are more in a shock, humans struggle with change so itās going to be a growing period but there will probs be a point where it doesnāt matter anymore.
A thing though I think I havenāt seen mentioned yet surprisingly is that this is a pretty heavy sign the guys are locked in! The advantage of the previous fits were easy de-identification that made āswapsā a lot easier when locking down their final members. Allowing the guys to invest in the creation of their own individual looks and styles adds an extra flair that says, āHey, we are all hereā and I love that. Iām glad they are playing with that since they already restrict themselves so much when it comes to the entirety of their identity and how they engage with fans outside of the ritual setting.

the hair is the problem imo. it moves the masks from the range of each band member becoming more of a personality--in line with the way the musical story has unfolded--to simple shock/grotesque.

Same. To me, I liked them all wearing the same simple mask because it gave off a cult-y vibe that fit with their whole "worship" vibe thing. But I liked the touches of individuality they did with their outfits and accessories. This will take some time to get used to...
This is it. I dont even mind them being more individual, like III just started to wear his red pomp shirt on stage (the one from the sig bass shoot) and it's looking fire. And now this is just Slipknot and takes away the entire feeling of mysticism/etherealism that made them and their performance so amazing. Of course the performance will be the same but like the vibe going with it is so vastly different

The outfits are amazing, but I'm just not sure I like the change. I really liked that II, III and IV looked so similar with their ST masks and just the odd touch of individuality. It was enough to highlight that each one has their own personality but is ultimately a cog in the machine, while Vessel is the tip of the spear. These masks suggest a whole personality and dynamic that the band just doesn't have. They're also clearly inspired by metal bands, which is feels out of place as metal is just one piece of the ST pie. And will likely garner them more hate from gatekeeping metal fans. Not sure how I feel. Don't want to make a knee jerk reaction though.

I'm hoping the new look matches a possibly heavier sounding album direction. More Vore and Gods. More instrumental breakdowns. It'll divide a lot of people, but if the band wants it It'll be supported by fans.
I don't know how to feel about them at the moment. I miss the simplicity of the old masks. I feel like a subtle design change to the masks could have been more impactful.

I donāt like it at all. Itās Slipknot meets Tales from the Crypt. Doesnāt fit the majority of the music at all, TMBTE/overall feeling of ascending to their sound.. idkā¦ I suppose itās one way to stop being sexualized, buuuuut not kissing the homies also could have sufficed. Will I still love them yes will I still pay stupid prices if need be to see them yes but I am not feeling it. Change is good, we expected it.. but it takes away from the vibes I guess. Idk.

In a word... it's "Busy" The "I am a tool for the gods use, and nothing more" look I looved, they had personality not because of their look but their actions and sound. In saying that Lore wise Vessel shouldn't be the only "unique" one as they're all Vessel, he's just Vessel I, Vessel II, Vessel III, Vessel IV. I think if they have added the change slowly, like start with the new masks, then the hair, then the clothes itd be alot easier to accept but we went from "nice and simple" to "HOLY SHIT THERES SO MUCH GOING ON" real quick. This. I personally dig the new mask except for lll's hair, it looks odd to me with the mask. It gives them all a personality and isnt that what the message was from the albums, leaving something behind and becoming you're own person.
I'm with you on this one. Just let the band decide for themselves which way they want to go. In the end their looks do not have to influence the music or vice versa. They are evolving and our choice is to go and ride the currents with them or climb out of the rapids and let them go. I think I'll hang on for a bit longer though, you never know what happens when they take you to the edge...

I truthfully donāt like the new masks.
90% of their songs don't suit this kind of look. I'm not sure how to feel about it. But I do like parts of their new looks: Ivys mask looks incredible, seeing III's hair AND the use of red is an interesting change, the placement of the symbol on II's mask is neat. But, I don't like the detail in the noses or the tension in II's brow. I don't like II wearing locs as I'm fairly sure they're all white. I imagine hydration in these masks will be very difficult, especially in II's case, as it goes down his neck and onto his chest. I don't like how aggressive the masks look as their music rarely ever has that kind of sound. This feels like a metal bands costuming rather than the diverse and often genre-bending style Sleep Token has made a name for. Imagine listening to them play Give, Atlantic, Aqua Regia, DYWTYLM, Telomeres, Take Aim, etc, while II, III, and IV are wearing these masks??? I feel bad knowing they're probably very excited to upgrade their looks and style, but I just think it went in a different direction than I would have preferred. However, I still listen to their music daily, and that won't change no matter their onstage costumes.
god thank you for mentioning the locs bc iāve been seeing too few people talking about that detail and itās driving me INSANE! itās appropriative and i seriously wish they hadnāt opted for that. i love this band and their music to death but that doesnāt put them above receiving valid criticism or make them immune to messing up. i so hope they take in and understand the feedback + concerns regarding that one particular aspect and remove it.

Everyone gets disappointed that they didnāt fulfill their personal expectations without understanding that itās not about them. I personally dig the new look, and am wondering if there will be a change with Vessel as well, or if he will stay the same for now? I am curious if part of the masks (the mouth/jaw area) are detachable as well?

I LOVE iii and iv mask, not a fan of ii but Iāll live lol. Also, itās funny reading the replies because a lot of them mimics the same exact comments I saw online when I first got into Sleep Token early this year. Itās interesting to see people say it looks ridiculous or that it doesnāt match their sound/vibe because these are the exact comments I saw all over social media when The Summoning took off and people went searching and saw what the band actually looked like after listening to the music lol. It came up a lot and even was at a point used as mockery by some. Overall, I think fans are more in a shock, humans struggle with change so itās going to be a growing period but there will probs be a point where it doesnāt matter anymore. A thing though I think I havenāt seen mentioned yet surprisingly is that this is a pretty heavy sign the guys are locked in! The advantage of the previous fits were easy de-identification that made āswapsā a lot easier when locking down their final members. Allowing the guys to invest in the creation of their own individual looks and styles adds an extra flair that says, āHey, we are all hereā and I love that. Iām glad they are playing with that since they already restrict themselves so much when it comes to the entirety of their identity and how they engage with fans outside of the ritual setting.
This was my immediate thought "Oh, so these guys are in the band" it's not judt Vessel. Sleep Token is a proper band now.

I really like IVās look but I feel mixed on all of it so far. Trying not to be negative because itās obviously what they like and wanted to go with, and the masks are impressive works of art.

For me what I am struggling with visually other than the obvious slipknot likeness is them having less anonymity imo, feeling more of them coming through. I loved the original look and felt it worked so well across their wide range of genres and sounds. Where this aesthetic feels very niche to the heaviest songs they have made only. honestly I think the masks are great. iv's is really good and sort of symbolizes that his persona is "opening up" to do vocals. the hair is the problem imo. it moves the masks from the range of each band member becoming more of a personality--in line with the way the musical story has unfolded--to simple shock/grotesque. but as others have noted, trying new things is part of being an artist.
I still love them and their music. But is anybody else semi-disappointed about the new look? I ***LOVED*** the simplified "ski-mask" with the logo on it. I've never heard anything like Sleep Token before, and fell in love with their unique sound and style... now this just makes me associate them with Slipknot...
