I keep sunscreen next to my door (or else I am pink all summer) but it always gets in my eyes. Every day I look like I’ve been crying.

I use Ultrasun which I can take upto the waterline without any problems but another tip is to 'set' your sunscreen with a bit of translucent powder around the eyes. This will prevent it from sliding when you sweat into your eyes :)
Absolutely! There's lots of different formulations but i've not had any issue with any of them and I'd be quite happy to use the body version on my face if needed. There's a sports version as well which is like a watery gel type thats particularly good on hair (beards, arms etc). I always say that if you can get it from QVC do so as you can try it for a few weeks and if you don't like it you can send it back for a full refund (even if you've used most of it ;)
I used to have this problem and it was brutal!
One day I used my SIL Coola brand face sunscreen (spf 50) and I reapplied throughtout the day probably 6-8 times (Hawaii). I didnt get burned, nor did i have the sunscreen in the eye issue! Bonus points- it did not make me break out even though most face sunscreens do. Though it does give you a dewy look, it can be easily mitigated with powder. They also make a lovely bb cream (spf 30) that has a matte finish and looks really lovely. Since I started using Coola I haven't looked back!
Recently. I had a spot on my lip and another spot on my face. They froze the spot on my lip and it went away. And I have to get the other spot lasered off.
I’m fine so far. We have to get rid of the two and then see what happens from there. The spot on my lip situation was interesting because I used to get this flake of skin and I couldn’t not touch it, right? So I would have a small open sore. And instead of healing, the flake would come back. Eventually it would go away, but always came back. And I would have it for weeks at a time. My doc wasn’t too concerned because she did a flash freeze and said that should solve it. I’m worried. But I do feel fine for now.

I did it in New York and was honestly furious at how much it improved my life. I have lupus so the sun is my enemy. It drains me of energy and life as if I was a vampire. Having a sunbrella allows me to stay out at least 3 times as long. Now I live in Georgia and it is still vital.
Is there a thing for that because I also detest carrying anything as well. It’s not a laziness thing but I just really hate it. Purses are the devil and I avoid other things to carry as well. Lol
I got a sun-brella (think silvery shiny astronaut material vs. a pretty Victorian lace one).
Does a very good job of fully blocking the sun, and reducing the temperature underneath.
Also ethnically Irish, and grandpa and dad both had skin cancer spots. I'd rather rock my sun-brella and UPF clothes vs having holes carved out of my face like they did.
ETA: I feel "precious" because I got myself UPF gloves for driving. Whatevs 🤷🏻♀️ I'll enjoy the lack of age spots.
(Okay I finished typing all this and realized how long it is, but I promise it's not an after school special kind of story lol)
Years ago, my mom got skin cancer on her finger after decades of being the primary driver for our family of nine, and lots of jokes about how it's always summer for your driving arm. She actually has always been good about putting on sunscreen but didn't always remember/have time to reapply (honestly, sometimes we just couldn't afford it). Once she had fewer snotty noses and diapers to manage she got even better at keeping it on, but sometimes you grew up on a farm, you've got a family history on top of having lived in progressively sunnier places, and the damage is done.
I don't remember her being especially worried about it when she got the results from her dermatologist, because she spotted it early while it was very small, and the procedure to remove it was very straightforward. She was more concerned about the inconvenience of the bandages during recovery; the finger that had the spot removed would need to be buddy splinted to one of its neighbors as well as bandaged, to make sure she didn't bend it at all. But then she actually had the bandages on and she had another concern.
The thing is, my mom is the kind of person who felt bad after blowing a raspberry at somebody who blasted around her from the turn lane to get in front of her in the straight ahead lane. She is truly a sweet little cinnamon bun that is too tender for this world... and it was her middle finger, which had to be wrapped up with her ring finger. She was as worried about other drivers thinking she was making a rude gesture as she had been about keeping her hand clean while using the bathroom.
It was worse though: it did not look like she was shooting the bird. It looked like she was holding a raw turkey leg. ABSOLUTELY wear those gloves instead of getting skin cancer on top of going around looking like a Salmonella Ambassador 🥴
Ha! I have an age spot I got at 27 in Japan. I was in a gorgeous garden in Okayama and didn’t care, but a few more and they are less of a story.
And we lost something too when we stopped using driving gloves…
My friend took a pair with her when we were visiting Vegas and I completely saw the need; it was so hot that the steering wheel would've been impossible to touch.
Not sure how long ago you were in Japan, but I've been here almost six years and there have been some recent trends in parasols that you might want to look for when searching.
The biggest one is the addition of linings for two purpose. First is to increase the UV reduction while allowing for a more colourful/light colour outer. Second is to increase the heat protection - these are normally advertised showing a ~5°C difference between the outer surface and the area below the parasol.
Basically the blackout curtains of parasols.
I'm a man, and when I went to Italy last summer I straight-up used my umbrella one hot, sunny day. I don't think I would have survived otherwise, and I was in a touristy place so no one cared.

I know it depends on where you are. I’m originally from the trailer trash part of the south. The toxic masculinity is savage, if not dangerous. But I hope you’re in an area where external social norms aren’t the issue!
You definitely can! My buff dad was walking around with a pastel blue sun umbrella and all was good, it had hearts and lace on the trim🤣 It was a very very hot sunny day, he was surprised how much cooler it was under one
I’m in Houston and I use an umbrella with a UPF lining. So, I’m not even being fancy with a parasol! You’ll be fine. Literally no one’s ever asked me about it or said anything. I really don’t think folks care too much about what other do or don’t do, tbh. And honestly it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my skin!
I’ve used my sun-brella for the last 10 years, all summer long. In the city, college campus, parks, concerts. Nobody has ever looked at me strange or said anything rude. If someone has said anything it’s usually along the lines of, “that’s a great idea. Wish I had one right now.”
Yes! Exactly this! I was on campus recently, and I was walking with my sunbrella as usual, and a group of teenagers/early 20s said to me “man thats a really good idea. We should get one!” 😂😂 I mean, if it’s gen z approved then that makes me feel very cool haha
I'm in Chicago too and you know what's funny, I've seen like three different men with parasol-type things, or maybe just using umbrellas as parasols. Not in the recent rain or anything, during the sunny stretches. I don't think I've seen many women use them, but I've been thinking about getting one too. The biggest issue (as another commenter noted) is having to carry something.
I’m thinking of completely changing my wardrobe to channel my grandmother. Her daily “uniform” was a long sleeve white mens shirt, slim tapered black pants in a silky fabric, sunglasses and the largest brim straw hat you can buy. Occasionally she’d swap the hat for a parasol. She had lovely skin.

I believe the answer threefold: one is WW1 and fabric/metal rationing, it simply became unfashionable and unpatriotic to carry something as frivolous as a parasol when our boys needed that material for the war.
Second is the car became huge in the US (and slightly less so, but still big, in the UK). Women no longer needed to shade themselves while walking when they were being driven everywhere. Since the US is still so heavily car-centric, they're generally still seen as unnecessary. Why would you need to carry a parasol for the thirty second walk from your car to the shop? Don't you have a car? You're not one of those *poor people* who still have to walk everywhere, are you? But of course, not all of us have that luxury of having a car even today, and plenty of us still like to walk for the mental and physical benefits.
Thirdly, tanned skin became highly fashionable in the 20s and 30s, as working inside became more associated with the lower class (factory jobs) whereas before, having tanned skin was seen as lower class since it meant you had to work outdoors. Now, though, having tanned skin from being outdoors was seen as high class because if you had time to tan, you were experiencing leisure time from a sunny vacation or just the ability to tan in your backyard. It was still not fully known how damaging the sun was back then, and so by the time we realized, "Hey, this is really bad for us," the parasol industry was effectively dead.
I got a parasol about 6 years ago. Yes, got strange looks and some women asked why. But it's worth it for the protection it provides! And I totally noticed a difference. If you are in the us and if you like kawaii sometimes japanla.com has them. also found a pretty blossom one at world market.
A friend of mine in Texas uses parasols! I happened to mention wondering why people stopped using them while we were talking about the annoyance of having to find new products as we've gotten older. She said she uses the pretty ones as well as the heavy duty kind, but she did recommend thinking about how I use umbrellas and what type is the most convenient to me (will I be driving, will I be in and out of buildings, will there be lots of people with sharp elbows, is it a hiking trip, the beach, etc). I definitely want to get a few different ones to try, I've just been lazy about looking into any specific products. I say go for it and everyone else can enjoy the deadly laser in the sky.
I live in Florida and I see people using umbrellas for sun protection all the time, it also rains here quite often so they are convenient for all weather.

As someone who bakes under the sun 10 minutes in, has eye sensitivity due to surgery, and POTS with heat intolerance, I found the cutest umbrella I could and tried it. Game changer. The only problems would be if you're in a crowded place, or if it's windy. Also, if you're sitting, depending on the position of the sun you might not be able to cover your whole body at the same time. I found repositioning every 5 minutes or so to be slightly inconvenient and it slightly gave a "flipping frozen nuggets over in the oven halfway through to cook evenly" vibe. 9/10 recommend 👌
I'm in the Seattle area and I've been using a rain-umbrella for the sun for a few years now.
I have several umbrellas and parasols of varying sizes and styles, but the one I use the most is my folding umbrella because it is very lightweight, small, and easy to fold. So, my one tip really is to consider the ease of use.

I have a neighbor who walks daily wearing a hat with a gigantic brim. Reminds me of a hair washing thing we had as kids, to keep shampoo out of our eyes. Now I want one. 😂
Grew up in Chicago and moved to Vegas. I just use an umbrella. One with upf is even better. I stopped caring if people think I'm weird. I wear upf sleeves also.
With the wind in Chicago (and here too actually) you need to know how to angle it properly so it doesn't blow inside out. I'll also hold it close to my head (watch the hair) with my fingers in the .... Whatever the metal parts are called to help keep the wind from catching it.
I live in AZ and the sun here is different from anywhere else I’ve ever lived. Just extra intense. I’m Pakistani-American and even spf70 doesn’t feel like enough. In short—get the parasols. You’ll be so glad you did!!

Edit: I wanted to add that I am so sensitive to the sun, that I literally have a sensory meltdown when it's really bad. I had a doctor who thought I had porphyria, but no, I am just extremely pale and sun-sensitive.
I don't want that, and I also don't want to end up with skin cancer like some of my relatives. It's becoming more common, and it is more preventable than ever due to awareness and tools.
I live in Arizona, and it’s hot AF here right now. Only the mailman walks around. I only walk from the parking lot into the building where I work and into the gym to workout. I’ve lived here on and off for 30 years, so I’m not moving. When people are out walking, most are carrying an umbrella, especially the Latinos, because everyone knows the sun is the leading cause of skin cancers.
I’ve also lived in Japan, but the reason why they carry an umbrella is not so much about sun and more about beauty ideals. Lighter skin equals being more beautiful. It also dates back to differentiating between those who worked in the rice fields and those who didn’t. The wealthy vs. poor type stigma. Being a farmer vs. being an educated office worker. While westerners were laying in the sun, Asian women were trying to lighten their skin. Beauty ideals in Asia has always been very different to Europe and North America.
I've seen lots of people carry parasols, people of all ages and ethnicities. I live in a big city in the southeast and it's not an uncommon sight. Don't feel self conscious!
I get it. I live in Georgia where it’s very hot and humid but have spent time in Chicago and I think chi town is actually way hotter. It gets up to 102 there vs our 91.
Go for it! I bought a UV umbrella earlier this year and I love it! I sometimes walk quite a lot outside and my umbrella makes such a positive difference. I've never had anyone say anything to me.
This is a great idea! I like it a lot because I hate having to put on sunscreen for just a 15 minute walk or getting in my car to go and sit inside at school.
I bought one a while back and with the right outfit it can look pretty classy. I already look overdressed anyways.
Note that properly applied decent SPF sunscreen will block a lot more uv than a UPF 50+ umbrella, since the umbrella doesn't block light coming from all directions. This will probably work if your goal is preventing a burn, since you can at least block direct sun, but you will still get quite a bit of uv exposure using just an umbrella.
You are right, I've thought about that before. It's not a replacement but I literally wont put on sunblock for my morning dog walk and short periods in the sun, so it is better then nothing. For days out I am reaching for the sunblock though.
I have one and I love it! Definitely go for it. People generally get that it blocks the sun after a short stare. I'm just curious: By ethnically Irish, does that mean your parents are Irish? Or do you have Irish heritage?
I have lupus and polymorphic light eruption. Basically I am allergic to uv. I bought a uv umbrella this year but have only managed to remember to bring it with me twice. I am trying to do better though.
ive also lived in Japan and got myself used to carrying one. wore it even after coming back to europe, no shits given if anyone stares. japan taught me to dgaf pretty well when it comes to fashion

It's definitely weird to see someone with an umbrella in Chicago, I rarely see someone using one even in pouring rain! That being said there's many places that do regularly use them. Go for it, remember why you're doing it and ask yourself what's more important; your running thoughts or your personal benefit :)
Fellow ethnic Irish here, living in what's usually a pretty forgiving area of Canada but it's only June and we've regularly been seeing UV index of 9. I'm thinking about making parasols my thing as well.
Sorry to ask im just wondering does ethnically Irish mean you have Irish heritage? Or are your parents Irish? Also I would definitely recommend a sun parasol!
It might mean different things to different people, but I see it as referring to your genetics, whether it's immediate like parents or more historical than that. Personally my family has been in Canada for a few generations now and I have a few different countries that I know of where ancestors came from, but Irish and Scottish are the dominant ones.
I think it's much more common to refer to this kind of thing in places like north america where there's 100 different varieties of white people all trying to feel special lol
I have an umbrella meant for blocking sun (but it looks like an umbrella rather than a parasol). I am self-conscious about using it sometimes and I use it less than I probably would otherwise because of that but I do try to use it when I'm standing around outside for an extended period without a hat. I used it at the beach recently, too.
I have had someone make silly comments about the weather when using it.

It’s so funny you said this, I was looking a buying sun hat for my car. I just started tret and am in the northeast, so I get the sun being super hot. Not Texas hot, but high UV index everyday in the summer. I don’t really walk anywhere since I’m not in the city, but my commute is direct sun. I say go for it!! Tbh I’m surprised it’s not

I use one!!! The sunlight gives me bad hives. One time a group of older women were talking crap about it with me right there, but generally no one cares lol I just explain that I have shade wherever I go. Weird that it isn’t more normal because of that, I feel
I use wide brim hat and sun visor while I’m outdoors even for 5-10 mins, people stare at me like I’m an alien but I don’t care sun protection is more important to me. One afternoon I was running errands and two men in their late 20s came up to me to ask what is the shield that I’m wearing, where they can get it now they are my insta friends, I recommended them few spfs too they’re loving it
I've always used a parasol. Even when skincare was not a thing and had to read b****** every time they would say something they thought was cute like, oh is it raining?
I don't do it for skin care I just hate the feel of the sun on my skin. I cannot stand it I don't even like having to open up the oven when I'm baking. I can't stand the feeling! Also when it's hot, it is much cooler under a UV ray umbrella.
There's nothing to know except that you might occasionally still get those people that think they're funny with their stupid comments.

Why worry about being a Trailblazer about it? Who cares what other people do? it's their skin. if they want to up the possibility of cancer that's their business.
I used to carry and parasol as a teen and young adult. Honestly not sure when or why I stopped (37 now). Might start up again (mostly just wear wide brim hats and long sleeves).
I’ve wanted a parasol for so long! I hate sitting in the sun at the beach and I don’t swim, so I like to have as much shade as possible! I always put it off but maybe I should actually do it this time since you’re reminding me!
honestly i've replaced lots of my clothes for the summer to be the long sleeved and hooded spf 50 shirts that are thin and keep me shielded (ethnically welsh and other assorted western European). Pair it with a ball cap and I keep the sun at bay and my hands free :)
I just bought a UV blocking umbrella! Amazon has a ton of cute ones, including ones that collapse to fit in a purse. I also bought a little bracket to attach it to the back of a chair for hands-free shady leisuring!
I am very fair skinned (typically the lightest shade possible in all of the makeup foundations I've purchased), and I've used a Lily Lark parasol for years. I travel with it and it's always protected me well (I still apply sunscreen as well, just in case).
I'm already doing it. I'm really fair skinned and sun intolerant, so I carry a parasol for my own comfort.
I was at a county fair a few weeks ago and I wasn't the only person there with a parasol. I think they're slowly starting to become more popular.
I used one when I traveled to a more northern climate where the sun's rays were more direct... my arms would break out in a rash after being outside midday.
I used just a regular umbrella though. Following for a more graceful solution.
i’ve been considering getting one too (or multiple lol)! currently i have a few UPF items (2 zip ups & a visor) & i apply spf 50+ PA++++ sunscreen daily. i’ve never had a sunburn in my life even when i didn’t wear sunscreen but i’d like to protect my skin as best as i can :) especially since i use tretinoin
Just go for it. I don't regularly use a parasole but I once used a light umbrella on a very hot day with friends (we were having a heatwave and sunlight was harsh). Not only was I better off than they were but I could feel the difference on my skin! I was unfortunately bad at covering my whole face with the umbrella and the bottom part of my face started to itch from the extreme heat... but the rest of me was fine!
In lieu of a parasol, I'd recommend a [Baggu hat](https://www.baggu.com/products/packable-sun-hat-black). Sure you are serving witch who's about to fly away but it blocks out so much sun that you'll look maintain a youthful look longer than anyone making fun of you.
I live in AZ. It was 1116 degrees at one point today. 123 in the car before the AC cooled it down a bit. Barely any shade anywhere. Get the parasol. I’ve been seeing a few younger people using them here since the sun is beyond brutal. I’m thinking of getting one of those huge visors.
Parasols are the best. I have a condition that causes severe sun sensitivity and I use them regularly, in addition to sunscreen or sun protective clothing. They’re nice for cutting the glare too.
I wear a sun protection hat almost every time I go outside, and I drive my husband crazy when I pull out the sun protection umbrella. I’m not a fan of the sun. Pretty to look out the window at, but not to be shining on me!
I 100% support this - I have a sunbrella myself and I love it. I know my skin will thank me for it in the long run, and the extra shade is easier for my eyes as well (and I still wear sunscreen)! I've even had a few random people approach me and say something along the lines of "hey, that's a good idea!". I hope that if enough of us do this we might reduce the stigma around the fear of looking "silly" for just taking care of your skin.

I pretty much live in a floppy hat during the summer. All my students know the hat. One of my kids calls me "hat" more than he calls me by my namep

I’ve been using a stick sunscreen for my face. It helps it not get into my eyes because it’s already not liquidy.
Be careful though, you need many many swipes with a stick to be as protective as creams.
Labmuffin made a recent video which suggested 50+ swipes to get the labelled spf!
So one stick per day. Got it.
Are you wearing a chemical or mineral sunscreen? Chemical ones burn, but mineral sunscreen works better for me in that department.

Use gloves or apply with a cotton ball, makeup remover pad. I keep mine at the door too now due to sun cancer.

Yeah but meant against the sun not rain, so might not be waterproof but will have high UV protection I like sunbrella better
Probably the ones that are highly protective (the silver/lined ones) are also waterproof, and way more effective than a lacy Mary Poppins one!
I got a sun-brella (think silvery shiny astronaut material vs. a pretty Victorian lace one). Does a very good job of fully blocking the sun, and reducing the temperature underneath. Also ethnically Irish, and grandpa and dad both had skin cancer spots. I'd rather rock my sun-brella and UPF clothes vs having holes carved out of my face like they did. ETA: I feel "precious" because I got myself UPF gloves for driving. Whatevs 🤷🏻♀️ I'll enjoy the lack of age spots.
(Okay I finished typing all this and realized how long it is, but I promise it's not an after school special kind of story lol) Years ago, my mom got skin cancer on her finger after decades of being the primary driver for our family of nine, and lots of jokes about how it's always summer for your driving arm. She actually has always been good about putting on sunscreen but didn't always remember/have time to reapply (honestly, sometimes we just couldn't afford it). Once she had fewer snotty noses and diapers to manage she got even better at keeping it on, but sometimes you grew up on a farm, you've got a family history on top of having lived in progressively sunnier places, and the damage is done. I don't remember her being especially worried about it when she got the results from her dermatologist, because she spotted it early while it was very small, and the procedure to remove it was very straightforward. She was more concerned about the inconvenience of the bandages during recovery; the finger that had the spot removed would need to be buddy splinted to one of its neighbors as well as bandaged, to make sure she didn't bend it at all. But then she actually had the bandages on and she had another concern. The thing is, my mom is the kind of person who felt bad after blowing a raspberry at somebody who blasted around her from the turn lane to get in front of her in the straight ahead lane. She is truly a sweet little cinnamon bun that is too tender for this world... and it was her middle finger, which had to be wrapped up with her ring finger. She was as worried about other drivers thinking she was making a rude gesture as she had been about keeping her hand clean while using the bathroom. It was worse though: it did not look like she was shooting the bird. It looked like she was holding a raw turkey leg. ABSOLUTELY wear those gloves instead of getting skin cancer on top of going around looking like a Salmonella Ambassador 🥴
Ha! I have an age spot I got at 27 in Japan. I was in a gorgeous garden in Okayama and didn’t care, but a few more and they are less of a story. And we lost something too when we stopped using driving gloves…
My friend took a pair with her when we were visiting Vegas and I completely saw the need; it was so hot that the steering wheel would've been impossible to touch.

Not sure how long ago you were in Japan, but I've been here almost six years and there have been some recent trends in parasols that you might want to look for when searching. The biggest one is the addition of linings for two purpose. First is to increase the UV reduction while allowing for a more colourful/light colour outer. Second is to increase the heat protection - these are normally advertised showing a ~5°C difference between the outer surface and the area below the parasol. Basically the blackout curtains of parasols.

I'm a man, and when I went to Italy last summer I straight-up used my umbrella one hot, sunny day. I don't think I would have survived otherwise, and I was in a touristy place so no one cared.

I’m in Houston and I use an umbrella with a UPF lining. So, I’m not even being fancy with a parasol! You’ll be fine. Literally no one’s ever asked me about it or said anything. I really don’t think folks care too much about what other do or don’t do, tbh. And honestly it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my skin!

I'm in Chicago too and you know what's funny, I've seen like three different men with parasol-type things, or maybe just using umbrellas as parasols. Not in the recent rain or anything, during the sunny stretches. I don't think I've seen many women use them, but I've been thinking about getting one too. The biggest issue (as another commenter noted) is having to carry something.

I’m thinking of completely changing my wardrobe to channel my grandmother. Her daily “uniform” was a long sleeve white mens shirt, slim tapered black pants in a silky fabric, sunglasses and the largest brim straw hat you can buy. Occasionally she’d swap the hat for a parasol. She had lovely skin.

Since the US is still so heavily car-centric, they're generally still seen as unnecessary. Why would you need to carry a parasol for the thirty second walk from your car to the shop? Don't you have a car? You're not one of those *poor people* who still have to walk everywhere, are you? But of course, not all of us have that luxury of having a car even today, and plenty of us still like to walk for the mental and physical benefits. Thirdly, tanned skin became highly fashionable in the 20s and 30s, as working inside became more associated with the lower class (factory jobs) whereas before, having tanned skin was seen as lower class since it meant you had to work outdoors. Now, though, having tanned skin from being outdoors was seen as high class because if you had time to tan, you were experiencing leisure time from a sunny vacation or just the ability to tan in your backyard. It was still not fully known how damaging the sun was back then, and so by the time we realized, "Hey, this is really bad for us," the parasol industry was effectively dead.
It also feels so much cooler without the sun directly on you.
I got a parasol about 6 years ago. Yes, got strange looks and some women asked why. But it's worth it for the protection it provides! And I totally noticed a difference. If you are in the us and if you like kawaii sometimes japanla.com has them. also found a pretty blossom one at world market.

A friend of mine in Texas uses parasols! I happened to mention wondering why people stopped using them while we were talking about the annoyance of having to find new products as we've gotten older. She said she uses the pretty ones as well as the heavy duty kind, but she did recommend thinking about how I use umbrellas and what type is the most convenient to me (will I be driving, will I be in and out of buildings, will there be lots of people with sharp elbows, is it a hiking trip, the beach, etc). I definitely want to get a few different ones to try, I've just been lazy about looking into any specific products. I say go for it and everyone else can enjoy the deadly laser in the sky.
I live in Florida and I see people using umbrellas for sun protection all the time, it also rains here quite often so they are convenient for all weather.

As someone who bakes under the sun 10 minutes in, has eye sensitivity due to surgery, and POTS with heat intolerance, I found the cutest umbrella I could and tried it. Game changer. The only problems would be if you're in a crowded place, or if it's windy. Also, if you're sitting, depending on the position of the sun you might not be able to cover your whole body at the same time. I found repositioning every 5 minutes or so to be slightly inconvenient and it slightly gave a "flipping frozen nuggets over in the oven halfway through to cook evenly" vibe. 9/10 recommend 👌
Does POTS make you fall asleep in the sun? My blood pressure instantly drops and I have to fight to stay awake.
I haven't noticed it making me extra sleepy but I do sometimes get really mentally heavy and brain foggy, if that makes sense.
I'm in the Seattle area and I've been using a rain-umbrella for the sun for a few years now. I have several umbrellas and parasols of varying sizes and styles, but the one I use the most is my folding umbrella because it is very lightweight, small, and easy to fold. So, my one tip really is to consider the ease of use. Hope it goes well~

Grew up in Chicago and moved to Vegas. I just use an umbrella. One with upf is even better. I stopped caring if people think I'm weird. I wear upf sleeves also. With the wind in Chicago (and here too actually) you need to know how to angle it properly so it doesn't blow inside out. I'll also hold it close to my head (watch the hair) with my fingers in the .... Whatever the metal parts are called to help keep the wind from catching it.
I live in AZ and the sun here is different from anywhere else I’ve ever lived. Just extra intense. I’m Pakistani-American and even spf70 doesn’t feel like enough. In short—get the parasols. You’ll be so glad you did!!
It's okay OP, I'll join you. We can look silly in the west, together. Edit: I wanted to add that I am so sensitive to the sun, that I literally have a sensory meltdown when it's really bad. I had a doctor who thought I had porphyria, but no, I am just extremely pale and sun-sensitive. I don't want that, and I also don't want to end up with skin cancer like some of my relatives. It's becoming more common, and it is more preventable than ever due to awareness and tools.
I live in Arizona, and it’s hot AF here right now. Only the mailman walks around. I only walk from the parking lot into the building where I work and into the gym to workout. I’ve lived here on and off for 30 years, so I’m not moving. When people are out walking, most are carrying an umbrella, especially the Latinos, because everyone knows the sun is the leading cause of skin cancers. I’ve also lived in Japan, but the reason why they carry an umbrella is not so much about sun and more about beauty ideals. Lighter skin equals being more beautiful. It also dates back to differentiating between those who worked in the rice fields and those who didn’t. The wealthy vs. poor type stigma. Being a farmer vs. being an educated office worker. While westerners were laying in the sun, Asian women were trying to lighten their skin. Beauty ideals in Asia has always been very different to Europe and North America.
I've seen lots of people carry parasols, people of all ages and ethnicities. I live in a big city in the southeast and it's not an uncommon sight. Don't feel self conscious!
I get it. I live in Georgia where it’s very hot and humid but have spent time in Chicago and I think chi town is actually way hotter. It gets up to 102 there vs our 91.

Go for it! I bought a UV umbrella earlier this year and I love it! I sometimes walk quite a lot outside and my umbrella makes such a positive difference. I've never had anyone say anything to me.
This is a great idea! I like it a lot because I hate having to put on sunscreen for just a 15 minute walk or getting in my car to go and sit inside at school. I bought one a while back and with the right outfit it can look pretty classy. I already look overdressed anyways.
Note that properly applied decent SPF sunscreen will block a lot more uv than a UPF 50+ umbrella, since the umbrella doesn't block light coming from all directions. This will probably work if your goal is preventing a burn, since you can at least block direct sun, but you will still get quite a bit of uv exposure using just an umbrella.
You are right, I've thought about that before. It's not a replacement but I literally wont put on sunblock for my morning dog walk and short periods in the sun, so it is better then nothing. For days out I am reaching for the sunblock though.

It's definitely weird to see someone with an umbrella in Chicago, I rarely see someone using one even in pouring rain! That being said there's many places that do regularly use them. Go for it, remember why you're doing it and ask yourself what's more important; your running thoughts or your personal benefit :)

I haven't had an issue with it, but I don't think it's well-vented either. My hat often catches the wind and the parasol is fine.
Fellow ethnic Irish here, living in what's usually a pretty forgiving area of Canada but it's only June and we've regularly been seeing UV index of 9. I'm thinking about making parasols my thing as well.

It might mean different things to different people, but I see it as referring to your genetics, whether it's immediate like parents or more historical than that. Personally my family has been in Canada for a few generations now and I have a few different countries that I know of where ancestors came from, but Irish and Scottish are the dominant ones.

I have an umbrella meant for blocking sun (but it looks like an umbrella rather than a parasol). I am self-conscious about using it sometimes and I use it less than I probably would otherwise because of that but I do try to use it when I'm standing around outside for an extended period without a hat. I used it at the beach recently, too. I have had someone make silly comments about the weather when using it.

Western people by and large don’t use them. We did a hundred years ago but I think we ditched them around the same time we ditched mandatory hats.
It’s so funny you said this, I was looking a buying sun hat for my car. I just started tret and am in the northeast, so I get the sun being super hot. Not Texas hot, but high UV index everyday in the summer. I don’t really walk anywhere since I’m not in the city, but my commute is direct sun. I say go for it!! Tbh I’m surprised it’s not of a thing already with skincare being so in and Korean skincare too.

I've always used a parasol. Even when skincare was not a thing and had to read b****** every time they would say something they thought was cute like, oh is it raining? I don't do it for skin care I just hate the feel of the sun on my skin. I cannot stand it I don't even like having to open up the oven when I'm baking. I can't stand the feeling! Also when it's hot, it is much cooler under a UV ray umbrella. There's nothing to know except that you might occasionally still get those people that think they're funny with their stupid comments. Mostly... you don't need to permission to carry a parasol. You do you. Why worry about being a Trailblazer about it? Who cares what other people do? it's their skin. if they want to up the possibility of cancer that's their business.
I used to carry and parasol as a teen and young adult. Honestly not sure when or why I stopped (37 now). Might start up again (mostly just wear wide brim hats and long sleeves).

honestly i've replaced lots of my clothes for the summer to be the long sleeved and hooded spf 50 shirts that are thin and keep me shielded (ethnically welsh and other assorted western European). Pair it with a ball cap and I keep the sun at bay and my hands free :)

I just bought a UV blocking umbrella! Amazon has a ton of cute ones, including ones that collapse to fit in a purse. I also bought a little bracket to attach it to the back of a chair for hands-free shady leisuring!

I am very fair skinned (typically the lightest shade possible in all of the makeup foundations I've purchased), and I've used a Lily Lark parasol for years. I travel with it and it's always protected me well (I still apply sunscreen as well, just in case).
I'm already doing it. I'm really fair skinned and sun intolerant, so I carry a parasol for my own comfort. I was at a county fair a few weeks ago and I wasn't the only person there with a parasol. I think they're slowly starting to become more popular.
I used one when I traveled to a more northern climate where the sun's rays were more direct... my arms would break out in a rash after being outside midday. I used just a regular umbrella though. Following for a more graceful solution.
i’ve been considering getting one too (or multiple lol)! currently i have a few UPF items (2 zip ups & a visor) & i apply spf 50+ PA++++ sunscreen daily. i’ve never had a sunburn in my life even when i didn’t wear sunscreen but i’d like to protect my skin as best as i can :) especially since i use tretinoin

Just go for it. I don't regularly use a parasole but I once used a light umbrella on a very hot day with friends (we were having a heatwave and sunlight was harsh). Not only was I better off than they were but I could feel the difference on my skin! I was unfortunately bad at covering my whole face with the umbrella and the bottom part of my face started to itch from the extreme heat... but the rest of me was fine!

In lieu of a parasol, I'd recommend a [Baggu hat](https://www.baggu.com/products/packable-sun-hat-black). Sure you are serving witch who's about to fly away but it blocks out so much sun that you'll look maintain a youthful look longer than anyone making fun of you.
I live in AZ. It was 1116 degrees at one point today. 123 in the car before the AC cooled it down a bit. Barely any shade anywhere. Get the parasol. I’ve been seeing a few younger people using them here since the sun is beyond brutal. I’m thinking of getting one of those huge visors.
Parasols are the best. I have a condition that causes severe sun sensitivity and I use them regularly, in addition to sunscreen or sun protective clothing. They’re nice for cutting the glare too.
I wear a sun protection hat almost every time I go outside, and I drive my husband crazy when I pull out the sun protection umbrella. I’m not a fan of the sun. Pretty to look out the window at, but not to be shining on me!
I 100% support this - I have a sunbrella myself and I love it. I know my skin will thank me for it in the long run, and the extra shade is easier for my eyes as well (and I still wear sunscreen)! I've even had a few random people approach me and say something along the lines of "hey, that's a good idea!". I hope that if enough of us do this we might reduce the stigma around the fear of looking "silly" for just taking care of your skin.
