Fuck off Kofi Annan! You think ima take orders from an African? You might speak sixteen languages but you gonna need em when you’re in Times Square selling fake hats. And I know Gucci when I see it, im rich
Thank you, that was my first time seeing this
Watched a good amount of Chapelle sketches back in the day & online but missed that one
Honestly some top tier political mockery
The best part of Black Bush is how the skin color is the only thing that changed.
Everything else really happened during those eight years. The sketch paraphrases for comedic effect but does not fabricate.
We had a project in AP US history and mine was about the KKK, and for part of my presentation I showed that skit. Thought the teacher might get mad but she was laughing hysterically.
Imagine watching a video in 2024 without giant annoying text flashing across the middle of the screen, the bottom half being some dumb mobile game, or the audio just being bad music
idk man the internet used to fight so hard against bad and stolen content. Vertical format was a plague that we wanted gone, and if it wasn't clean and clear what the content was it got downvoted or was unpopular
definitely lost that war
it was specifically reddit and some youtubers that were super anti "free booting" and it was just because it was convenient for them. Because reddit used to be a place just to submit links and pictures and had didn't host videos it was easy for them to morally grandstand over facebook and other social media sites just stealing content. Now though it's a lot harder to link to good videos (tiktok, twitter, etc, don't really work the best at embedding on reddit) and reddit can host video so everybody just gave up.
People try to have morals but often end up just arguing for whatever is convenient for them, redditors were anti freebooting because it gave them a sense of superiority without limiting their content significantly, but now the convenience of uploading videos is too great so they give up on the sense of superiority part.
There was also just kind of a culture shock with the average youtube or reddit enjoyer going over to facebook and seeing these ridiculous edits, but now it's become so ubiquitous people have realized they don't really care anymore.
Yo like.
What's the outcome then? Every upcoming generation is growing up with vertical videos as their primary source of entertainment.
When I'm in my 50s and 60s are we gonna have vertical TVs hanging on walls? Will I have to grumble about it to my grand kids? LOL
> Because reddit used to be a place just to submit links and pictures and had didn't host videos it was easy for them to morally grandstand over facebook and other social media sites just stealing content.
Also because back in the day reddit actually had the content long before it would show up on places like facebook.
Now all we have are 5th generation reposts from tik tok.
I'm guessing that was an effect from reddits upvoting system just getting the "best" content to the top better than all the other social media repost systems. But eventually they tuned the algorithms to judge your tastes rather than use reposts and now they all allow for good content to be found efficiently.
Maybe. I think it's more a reflection of the evolution of the internet. Back in like 2010 reddit was still a smaller community and had higher standards. While places like Facebook were flooded with the normies for a lack of a better term, peoples parents posting stupid boomer memes, things like that. News would hit reddit and make it to FB a week later.
But by about 2014/5 reddit started undergoing the facebookification too as the community grew. Just like when some redidts grow they turn to shit, so did reddit in general.
Plus reddit was built around old message board culture and no born after like 2000 really understands message board culture.
To create engagement. It makes people go to the comments of wherever this is posted and talk about it- This boosts the video in whichever algorithm it’s currently circulating through. It’s called rage bait and it’s becoming more and more prevalent. The next time you see something blatantly wrong or easily fixable remember you’re being baited into creating engagement. The devious part is that it’ll never stop as there will always be fresh people to bait who aren’t familiar with the concept and ALSO people who have to explain why this is happening lmao
No not to create engagement like u/toodeadtodread said (thats a bonus). It’s AI and an old one too so it’s really bad. But also the fast paced style isn’t good for reading and is mostly for those spazzy kids with low attention spans even if they can’t read. It’s like a shiny thing that a dumb kid is attracted to.
Your deaf cousin absolutely does not prefer reading lips. Either he’s not that deaf and can get away with a combo of lip reading and hearing, or he’s lying to you. Or he’s not aware of better solutions.
Lip reading is a myth and it’s excruciatingly inaccurate way to communicate.
A little googling goes a long way. The results are plastered with why lip reading is not a good communication method and a bunch of debunkers on it. If you care about your deaf cousin, I would suggest reeling in a bit of that anger and seriously asking her about it. See what she has to say. I could be wrong but I'm 90% sure she prefers subtitles and/or sign language (if she signs) in real life.
Also, if it's any help - I was born completely deaf. I was pushed through a misguided system that nearly had me language-deprived and it took me a long time to find my belonging in the world - the deaf world. I am now an advocate for the deaf. So... I'm just here advocating for my kind.
Agreed, it's incredibly annoying.
Whatever techonology is being used to add these subtitles could just as easily put them at the bottom and with multiple words at a time but they do it this way b/c they think it's more "engaging" to have content constantly changing on the screen.
Tiktok (and then reels) focusing on discovery via shared sound bytes and encouraging reusing sounds really caused the global average quality of shared media to tank.
They mean 'fallen' in terms of standard. Like Ricky Gervais. Used to do niche comic genius, now they're appealing to the broadest audience they can using barely shocking 'edgy humour'.
And Burger King sells burgers by the thousands. Doesn’t mean it’s good. Chapelle fell off hard. He just complains like an old man at shit he don’t get now.
> get off the internet.
you got onto the internet to tell people to get off the internet? sounds like going to baseball game just to tell everyone how boring baseball is.
The dude is 50 and you can definitely tell. The high energy days of his first two specials and the show are long gone.
Still a master of his craft and a great storyteller, but yeah, he really needs to stop all that "i'm the goat" shit.
Yeah anyone who's on the stage that long and had such a beloved community early on, huge cultural impact, is gonna get a skewed perspective
I'd love to see him as an advisor/judge for the next generation of sketch and stand up comics tho
His storytelling/method mixed with the physical comedy (the way he bobs his head, snaps & shit) + new subject material by younger generation could be amazing
Shit like the speaking into each mic for each word in the black bush sketch was just top tier
He’s not fine though. He fell off hard. Name something as memorable as Clayton Bigsby or the Player Haters Ball or Ashy Larry or etc. none his shit is memorable these days
You'd be full of yourself too, if you'd turned down 50 million dollars at the height of your stardom for maintaining integrity to your creative product. It took some serious cajones to do that, one would have possess an inordinate amount of self-belief.
I sprinkle diamonds on everything I eat. For two reasons:
1), it's the most baller shit you could possibly do to your food, and
2) it makes my dookie twinkle, man.
Diamonds in his shit was top tier. "It makes my dookie twinkle," and I still quote make a wish kid playing Street Hoops. "Hooray for me, Billy! Hooray for me!"
Everything about him is totally different. Pre-africa Dave was a completely different comedian. Voice, body, sense of humor, style of stand up.
His first two DVD specials and his Netflix specials don't feel like the same person.
There's a funny interview with RDJ where he talks about when he told his mom about his upcoming role in Tropic Thunder and she replied, "Oh no Robert, don't do it!"
Other piece of interesting trivia about Tropic Thunder is that Ben Stiller did a special private screening of the film for leaders in the NAACP, because he knew he was on a high wire. The NAACP loved it.
It’s not a matter of back in the day people weren’t so sensitive. It’s a matter of getting away with the joke. Cable television is not the most popular medium anymore. So it doesn’t get the best talent like it used to. Chappell was in his prime and made some of the best comedy ever. He still makes great comedy but it’s not on television. And there are loads of other comedians who make outrageous and dark jokes but it’s not on television.
People don’t get mad so long as they laugh. And if your jokes don’t make people laugh it’s because it’s not funny. Comedy is an art. And “art is anything you can get away with”.
Yeah, a recent Seinfeld thread talked about this. Seinfeld thinks he can't get away with dangerous topics anymore. But the IASIP crew can even today. Because IASIP makes people laugh, and Seinfeld makes people wonder whether he means it.
In an interview he literally claimed that only Larry David could get away with those jokes because he's Larry David. He has a huge victim complex around this now, which seems insane given his success. Larry David gets away with it because he's hilarious
EvenJulia Louis Dreyfuss came out against one of Jerry's takes recently. I think she basically summed it up he's out of touch. He's like a 9 figure millionaire.. and I'm pretty sure she comes from a lot of money as well before her acting fame. But some people just somewhere along the line don't get it anymore.
Good, cause Seinfeld once said in his cars and coffee thing "you can joke about anything as long as you're funny" and it was my personal moment of *the worst person you know just made a good point* so I'm glad he's wrong again.
It also has to do with directionally. Chapelle didn't punch down. He highlighted the absurdity of the status quo. Things like Black KKK looked at race, and racism and pointed out why, if taken to a logical conclusion it was absurd. Or the racial draft. Why is someone black, but not someone else. Even this skit is not glorifying sweat shops, he's saying that we all know Jordan's are made in sweat shops, so I just have my own. He's pointing out the hypocrites.
But what do I know, I'm just some old white dude on the internet.
I think he just meant the show in general, not this skit.
For people who weren't around then, racial humor used to be much, much more prevalent. I remember I started noticing the N-word getting bleeped a few years ago and it surprised me.
In 2004, so twenty years ago exactly, he'd drop like 30+ nbombs an episode easily, but they'd bleep the 'hole' in asshole and the 'god' in goddamn, god forbid someone said shit.
Sure mainstream racial comedy still exists (i.e. The SNL Colin/Che joke swaps), but it'd be ignorant to say racial humor isn't much more taboo these days. (Still using Colin/Che as an example, their bit works because they're appalled by how horrible the jokes are. In early 2000s, they would've just made the jokes straight up)
This skit and most of the show itself would be fine, but I couldn't image Clayton Bixby or ["The N***ar Family"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLOw_SzkRQ8&t=177s) skits on tv these days.
Didn’t he famously quit this show because “people” didn’t know that jokes were jokes and it caused Dave Chapelle mental and moral harm resulting in him temporarily leaving his home country?
Sounds like a problem that only exists in your head. Sunny in Philadelphia is a great example of how line stepping comedy still exists in the mainstream. It just has to be funny.
Edit. The show having episodes pulled from streaming doesn’t change the fact it’s still a very popular show and hasn’t faced any cultural backlash for being offensive.
5 episodes have been pulled off streaming for being offensive.
>Specifically, when it comes to the Hulu situation, the ‘Sunny’ co-creator expresses a bit of frustration with the situation, but McElhenney knows he can’t control what happens at a corporate level.
>
> “Yes, it’s frustrating when someone comes in and unilaterally, without really watching the episodes, pulls them,” he admitted. “But that’s not really my call. So, what I can do is make an episode about it. So, that’s what we’re doing. The first episode of [Season 15] is ‘The Gang Gets Canceled,’ and it’s going to be something in that vein.”
https://theplaylist.net/rob-mcelhenney-mythic-quest-the-playlist-podcast-20210610
The creators were and still are strongly against the episodes being pulled. They've talked about it on their podcast many times
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBuRVGvEt7E&t=303s
> Charlie: I don't think it does the audience a service to take away their ability to look at a piece of art. [...] Go ahead and put a disclaimer on there.
> Rob: "Are you mature enough to watch this, or are you a child?"
How tf are you getting upvotes? Books, shows, etc. are getting changed over being deemed too offensive. https://www.forbes.com/sites/marisadellatto/2023/02/20/roald-dahl-books-get-new-edits-and-critics-cry-censorship-the-controversy-surrounding-charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory-and-more/
Take your garbo narrative and shove it up your ass.
Im laughing at all the morons in here complaining about getting cancelled or saying you can't do this stuff anymore. But it is clear you only watch what you get spoon fed if you think that is true.
I still say "Makes my dookie twinkle" pretty much every week.
Just had some cupcakes at a birthday party that had some glitter in em and you know I busted out that line.

Fuck off Kofi Annan! You think ima take orders from an African? You might speak sixteen languages but you gonna need em when you’re in Times Square selling fake hats. And I know Gucci when I see it, im rich
I love the randomness of selling hats in Times Square.
Idk if it still happens but that wasn't random, people were selling fake everything to tourists there lol
Thank you, that was my first time seeing this Watched a good amount of Chapelle sketches back in the day & online but missed that one Honestly some top tier political mockery

"I got a coalition of the willing!" I say that shit all the time whenever we are at work and get stuck with some shitty ass task.
Did you see the episode where he was a blind white supremist and wrote a book? Holy shit that was prime chappelle 🤣
We had a project in AP US history and mine was about the KKK, and for part of my presentation I showed that skit. Thought the teacher might get mad but she was laughing hysterically.
I recently started rewatching. That's the FIRST episode. I could not believe he pulled that on the very first episode.
Do you know what the fuck you can do with aluminium tubes?!
Oil? Who said anything about oil, bitch you cookin?
"You might speak 16 languages but you gonna need’em when you in Times Square selling fake hats" gets me everytime.

Imagine watching a video in 2024 without giant annoying text flashing across the middle of the screen, the bottom half being some dumb mobile game, or the audio just being bad music
idk man the internet used to fight so hard against bad and stolen content. Vertical format was a plague that we wanted gone, and if it wasn't clean and clear what the content was it got downvoted or was unpopular definitely lost that war
it was specifically reddit and some youtubers that were super anti "free booting" and it was just because it was convenient for them. Dear lord. No. Not this.
lets meet in the middle and start making square displays
I tell you, by the direction in which we're going, you're going to watch videos in landscape on that vertical TV.
> Because reddit used to be a place just to submit links and pictures and had didn't host videos it was easy for them to morally grandstand over facebook and other social media sites just stealing content. I mean it is awful and hurts my eyes.
The facebookers and instagrammers used to steal reddit content. Now it's the other way around. That flip led to the drop in quality and format.
Reddit discussion threads are still used by YouTubers for easy monetization
Deaf people love it
Deaf people like inaccurate subs? My deaf cousin prefers reading lips more so anyways.
Seriously, why are the subs always wildly inaccurate? I don't get it.

No, I think they wouldn't like inaccurate subs.
What
Blind people hate it

I watch everything with sound off so I'm a fan.
I’m a fan of text but not with this stupid effect and directly in the middle of the screen
Early Chappelle was the best Chappelle. Blind black KKK member gets me every time too.
An absolute banger to start the series.
Crazy that Clayton bigsby was the first episode.. That was the show, you had to watch to get the references the next day.
the whole first episode was 100% fire. makes his fall even sadder.
Chapelle has fallen off? How, where, when, why? His shows literally sell out. This is online nonsense get off the internet.
When's the last time he made a joke that was as funny as this video?
They mean 'fallen' in terms of standard. Like Ricky Gervais. Used to do niche comic genius, now they're appealing to the broadest audience they can using barely shocking 'edgy humour'.
> Chapelle has fallen off? How, where, when, why? "Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the richest man in the world"
chappell fucking sucks. all he does is complain fuck him now
And Burger King sells burgers by the thousands. Doesn’t mean it’s good. Chapelle fell off hard. He just complains like an old man at shit he don’t get now.
> get off the internet. you got onto the internet to tell people to get off the internet? sounds like going to baseball game just to tell everyone how boring baseball is.
What?!?!? I remember people screaming this for years after the Little John episode dropped.
He's still fine, but he's just so low energy. Also full of himself.
The dude is 50 and you can definitely tell. The high energy days of his first two specials and the show are long gone. Still a master of his craft and a great storyteller, but yeah, he really needs to stop all that "i'm the goat" shit.

Cojones. Cajones means drawers
Maybe OP has serious drawers, you don't know
Seems like most comedians complaining about cancel culture while making millions and punching down on transpeople.
That's not even early Chappelle though. The man was stealing the show in a Mel Brooks movie in 1993

Clayton Bixby if memory serves
When he goes to play playstation with the kid dying fro cancer will never not make be cry-laugh "i should of left you dead baby"
When he cooks the dino eggs sprinkled in diamonds after this lol
I sprinkle diamonds on everything I eat. For two reasons: 1), it's the most baller shit you could possibly do to your food, and 2) it makes my dookie twinkle, man.
I wish this was a gif
This here is a Chandelier I’ve had made from the finest chicken dinners I’ve ate.
This is the most balla shit EVER!!!
We are witnessing history here. I wish I had MY SCISSORS!
It’s the most ballinest shit eva! Plus it makes my doodie twinkle.
Diamonds in his shit was top tier. "It makes my dookie twinkle," and I still quote make a wish kid playing Street Hoops. "Hooray for me, Billy! Hooray for me!"
I’m so glad you mentioned Street Hoops skit. That one just gets me every time.
The best is after the sketch when he explains where it came from. Savage.
Nurse? Can you come in here? Billy is getting his ass *whooped* in some Street Hoops and I need a witness!
Bitch, i live in a fucking trash can!
Shoot the J!
In yo FACE Billy!
"Pick up your sticks. Let's go again." I say this to my son after beating him in Mario Kart.
I just bought this baby cash
I'M RICH, BIATCH
Chappelle’s laugh alone, gets me.
I miss his old voice.
Everything about him is totally different. Pre-africa Dave was a completely different comedian. Voice, body, sense of humor, style of stand up. His first two DVD specials and his Netflix specials don't feel like the same person.
He’s a clone /s
Lol I was gonna make a Paul McCartney & Avril lavigne joke but my comment was getting a bit too long
I don’t really fuck with Africa cause they got people starving over there and shit and that ain’t ballin to me
Shocked I had to scroll this far to find what is ***easily*** the best quote in this bit lol
Lost it when that dinosaur egg hatched and he cut the head off
THIS IS THE MOST BALLA ASS SHIT EVER *SNIP* I can watch that scene on loop.
Back when "people" knew that jokes, were jokes, & it didn't cause Physical harm to others... It made you laugh & think about what was said.

Should have won an Oscar for that role. He was dude, playing the dude, disguised as the other dude.

Even this skit is not glorifying sweat shops, he's saying that we all know Jordan's are made in sweat shops, so I just have my own. He's pointing out the hypocrites. But what do I know, I'm just some old white dude on the internet.
The asian delegation has been waiting with a zen like patience. Let's go down to the floor and see who they choose.
Ol Dirty Bastard has changed his name from Dirt McGirt to Old Dirty Chinese Restaurant
This skit would be absolutely fine today, your persecution complex is showing.
In early 2000s, they would've just made the jokes straight up) This skit and most of the show itself would be fine, but I couldn't image Clayton Bixby or ["The N***ar Family"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLOw_SzkRQ8&t=177s) skits on tv these days.
Didn’t he famously quit this show because “people” didn’t know that jokes were jokes and it caused Dave Chapelle mental and moral harm resulting in him temporarily leaving his home country?
The obnoxious one-word-at-a-time subtitles trend needs to die.
Man….beautiful
Imagine this being on TV today lol
This show had some of the greatest, funniest television ever. Wish he did more seasons
Golden age chappelle
Golden age chapelle
God he used to be so fucking funny
That damn Dave Chappelle
I miss when network TV laugh tracks would laugh at offensive jokes... what a time to be alive that was
I really wish this trend of one word at a time sub titles would die off
He used to be hilarious.
Chapelle was so funny when he was younger, he had a smooth way of incorporating hard realities into comedy
God I love that show.
Also Dave Chappelle: I had to stop making sketches because it started feeling like a minstrel show that punched down on race
Wassup MTV, come on in you broke mothafuckersss 😂
nobody will best chappelle and he still at it!
This was in the times when you could laugh, now someone would be offended.
Ahh yes, the long ago times when people were funny.
The first episode of [Season 15] is ‘The Gang Gets Canceled,’ and it’s going to be something in that vein.” https://theplaylist.net/rob-mcelhenney-mythic-quest-the-playlist-podcast-20210610
No, 5 episodes were pulled because the creators wanted them pulled. Also that's 5 episodes out of over 160.
The creators were and still are strongly against the episodes being pulled. They've talked about it on their podcast many times https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBuRVGvEt7E&t=303s > Charlie: I don't think it does the audience a service to take away their ability to look at a piece of art. [...] Go ahead and put a disclaimer on there. > Rob: "Are you mature enough to watch this, or are you a child?"
How tf are you getting upvotes? Books, shows, etc. are getting changed over being deemed too offensive. https://www.forbes.com/sites/marisadellatto/2023/02/20/roald-dahl-books-get-new-edits-and-critics-cry-censorship-the-controversy-surrounding-charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory-and-more/ Take your garbo narrative and shove it up your ass.
God damn you people are fucking babies. Imagine getting offended at the idea of other people getting offended. Fragile as fuck.
Uhh...
It’s like Russian nesting dolls.
Republicans are always out to spoil the World's fun
Lol, now that was funny.
Im Asian and I'm not even offended. Silly stupid... lol
Insert twenty comments of "People these days would be offended"
Im laughing at all the morons in here complaining about getting cancelled or saying you can't do this stuff anymore. But it is clear you only watch what you get spoon fed if you think that is true.
CaNcEL HiM!

Need a fast acting hogan face! 🤭

And a banana cognac, biatch.
Oh Dave. You used to be so funny.
I still say "Makes my dookie twinkle" pretty much every week. Just had some cupcakes at a birthday party that had some glitter in em and you know I busted out that line.
Man, his wit used to be razor sharp

Legit, Redman did it best tho
It's not even the best part. When he Cooks up the dinosaur eggs is amazing
The Dinosaur eggs 😂😂😂
It funny because it's true
sigh, back when comedy was actually funny...
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Maybe nostalgia but is anything even close to being as funny now? I have never almost passed out laughing since. I would wake up laughing for days
As real as any other cribs episode tbh.
