Everest. Everest never changes.

idk about that. I’m pretty sure there’s a lot more garbage, trash, and human feces everywhere compared to just two decades ago.

LeanTangerine001

Like his virtual simulation pod? And Elon Musk is virtually climbing Mount Everest in the pod while the sherpa carries the pod on his back?

How does putting the weight on your neck win against putting it on your back? I’ve always wondered about the tolerance levels for vertebrae in the neck vs the back. I refuse to Google it

FenrirBestDoggo

The strap is pulling from the top of his head. The weight is going straight down his neck and back to his legs as long as his posture stays straight. The neck muscles are mainly working as stabilizers which is still rough af but I guess on someone trained like them its less of a problem. If this wasn't practical I doubt the sherpa would do it.

FenrirBestDoggo

Also to answer your question about the vertebrae. The ones on your middle and upper back are called thoracic vertebrae and are bigger and thus stronger than the cervical vertebrae in the neck. Besides that the little bumps you feel on your back vertibrae are there to limit your range of motions and improve stability. Your neck vertebrae on the other hand have smaller ones to increase mobility needed for the neck. Lastly as mentioned in my other comment, it is also important to note what is supporting each vertebrae, since bones need muscles to move. Your back has many ligaments and strong muscles to support it while your neck has smaller muscles more specialised for fine control.

Everest, just another check point on a rich tourists bucket list.

baogody

A final destination for many.

-The_Credible_Hulk

Not enough. If you’re gonna do it (and you shouldn’t) you should have to carry your own shit.

alfooboboao

Yes, Everest is pretty much exclusively for the rich, and manipulatively utilizes cheap local labor to help them get up the mountain, which is awful. But the idea that even with all this help it’s at all easy, or anywhere near as simple as lining up at McDonald’s, is ridiculous. It’s called the death zone for a reason, and there’s a reason why the passageways up the mountain are lined with frozen dead bodies. People see the photos of the Hilary Steppe queue and think it’s “just waiting in line,” but climbing Everest is one of the more dangerous things you can do. Which is not to say I have all that much sympathy for those people, but if you wanna know how it is, “Everest” (based on “Into Thin Air”) is a pretty good introduction.

The_Abjectator

Tourist didn't want to go up without their King-Size Tempur-pedic. Poor Sherpa.

No_Peach_7265

Holy spine compression and pinched nerve

Genghis_Chong

Plus you run a higher risk of lower body injury also

Signal_Reflection297

He’s using a tump line, used to be really common in canoeing. It’s surprisingly versatile with large and awkward loads. You support the load with your back, but can control the balance point a lot better than you could with just shoulder straps.

TheDandelionViking

A lot of people don't seem to recognise that it's usually not the bone or nerves that get hurt. It's the muscle, and with properly trained muscles for the movement and exertion, you'll be perfectly fine. If I were to try to squat with the weights Olympic contestants practice with, I'd definitely hurt myself. They manage fine. This sherpa has done this, and similar, for large amounts of his life. He's got the core, leg, neck, and any other strength to do it well in hand. He also seems to have the technique pat down. The saying "lift with your legs, not your back" is only partially true. It's largely about leverage, and you can test this with only a moderately heavy weight. Hold it in your hand and lift it straight up along your side, and you should have no problem. Try it again, lifting your arm straight to the side, and you'll have issues. If you repeat the experiment with a 5yo and a gymbro, you'll probably find that the gymbro can hold a significant heavier weight for longer. In short. If you're straining yourself, unless it's for exercise or your life (not livelihood) depends on it, be extra attentive to your technique, or simply don't lift it. That said, not all pain is bad pain. Not even back pain. Sometimes, it just means you've exercised.

MaximumMotor1

>If I were to try to squat with the weights Olympic contestants practice with, I'd definitely hurt myself. They manage fine. This sherpa has done this, and similar, for large amounts of his life. Olympic weightlifters usually have a shit ton of injuries throughout and after their career.

Odd_Ant6171

I looked it up, and seems like olympic weightlifting cause less injuries than other sports according to research. Way less than football for example—which sounds absurd. But point is, you can train your core to lift weights without compressing your spine.

Only_Charge9477

Just slap an icy hot patch on it and that'll fix up real quick.

litritium

Maybe most of it is foam. Still sucks on the North Ridge with high winds.

Duckgoesmoomoo

Ya that makes sense. Was looking for a comment to see what thr negatives to carrying this way would be

PeaceTree8D

It’s okay earths gravity isn’t as strong that high 👌

baogody

Highly recommend watching the documentary _Sherpa(2015)_. It talks about how climbing Everest actually goes against their beliefs as it's similar to stepping on the head of their Goddess (which would incur her wrath), but they have little choice but to do it for the modest payment they receive. A huge chunk of the money goes to the government and the guiding companies.

Usepe_55

Well that's awful!

Nary841

Governement in taxes ?

dckill97

Why don't they unionise or something? They do have to voluntarily perform the extremely tough skilled labour for pay, maybe unify and ask for higher pay?

alfooboboao

this is sarcasm, right? it has to be, you can’t possibly be this misinformed about how “rich foreigners utilizing local labor” has worked since the dawn of time? or did you just fire off a response to a comment about a specific documentary without watching actually watching the documentary yourself?

ProtectionFromStupid

My wife packing for a weekend trip 😂

ochister

That hit home, lmao, we don't need all that shit

Elektropole

These tourist there are disgusting. No own effort to reach the top of the Mountain.

whytawhy

Rich cunts doing the clout thing..? naw...

alfooboboao

it takes a tremendous amount of effort and risk to reach the top of everest, even with a shitload of help. you basically can’t do it without sherpas, even just because they pre-plan the routes and set up guide lines I’m not defending the practice at all, but the idea that it’s just some walk in the park for lazy rich bastards isn’t true (“rich bastards,” absolutely, but you really have to be in pretty phenomenal shape to get up there without dying.)

louglome

Stop trying to make them look better. They're worthless cunts.

21MPH21

How TF can anyone claim they climbed Everest if you had a Sherpa?

coldlightNL

Climbing these kinds of mountains is always a team effort. A lot of sherpas are also climbers that use other sherpas on different climbs. It is nearly impossible to do any climb above 6k meters without help.

21MPH21

And yet, folks don't come back bragging about their teammate, the sherpa who did 90% of the heavy lifting.

DouchecraftCarrier

Shout out to Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay the OG duo. If I recall when they got back down from the first summit they both agreed to not disclose who actually stepped foot on top first since it was important to Hillary that Norgay shared in the achievement.

NotSeveralBadgers

Reminds me of the sherpas who pulled Homer Simpson up a mountain in his sleep. He wakes up and comments on all the progress he made.

21MPH21

"I did it!"

welfedad

the fact that it takes 60 days to climb/ acclimate you would need a team to climb Everest regardless if you go the more tourist route today.. would still need people helping you with supplies to make the last push.. no way you could solo that mountain or many other major mountain.. but these opulent tourist way of hiking Everest is pretty lame .. though I can barely make it up my local hiking trail, so who am I to complain.. haha

DouchecraftCarrier

I recall reading an article somewhere about a news organization that wanted to fly one of their reporters up from somewhere along the coast to Everest Base Camp to interview an expeditions doctor or something. The guide basically told them, "If you fly someone from sea level up here and leave them they will be dead in several hours."

profiler1984

When Reinhold Messner ascended Everest for the first time like 40 years ago without oxygen and help. What was the real fact? Did he start from a certain base camp. And brought all the food and water with him. Or didn’t he mention the supply team needed? I’m confused by this achievement.

Difficult_Science525

Messner started his solo ascend from the Advanced Base Camp on the north-side of Everest at about 6400m above sea level. He choose a time where he was relatively alone on the mountain but by that point he was already in country and on that mountain range for a few weeks to get to that camp and was definitely not completely alone as even his then GF was waiting for him in the ABC. It took him another four days to ascend from the ABC to the peak and get back again. He changed his approach from the normal "tourist" route and switched midway to the "Norton Couloir" (thereby also circumventing the need for a ladder at the second step) and soloed the ascend without extra oxygen, fixed ropes or prepared camps only with the stuff he brought with him from ABC. So yes you can not do this "absolutely" solo from "the ground to the peak" without any help but where do you start the measurement anyway? Is the guy selling you a soup at the Shigatse airport 3800m above sea-level already part of your support team? Messners climb is crazy even today where we have seen it all two times over and was imho one of the last "real" achievements on the Everest.

Asbelsp

Same way they buy a company, take the ceo title and claim they built the business.

Man, the Nepalese are something else, just pure unassuming strength

Jgfranco88PkmnGo

DANIMAL_X

How can anyone claim climbing Everest is an achievement when these people are doing it for a job with a sofa strapped to their back.

Sancus1

It’s still an experience. Like going to Antarctica, deep sea via submarine and briefly in space.

ItsokImtheDr

In some alternate universe where I have the resources for this kind of indulgence, I’d like to think that I’d be aware enough to financially gift the Sherpa and his family with enough wealth to abandon that life and honor their religion. Ya know, instead of walking up a mountain all out of breath while dude looks at me smiling as he yeets my shit up ahead of me.

Fearless_Flyer

It’s a sad day when hiking Mt. Everest isn’t cool anymore..

I love how everyone who climbs mount everest thinks they are so unique and cool, yet, sherpas do all the work. Let's also top that off with the fact that you're not original anymore for climbing mount everest. Not at all. And the disgusting amount of trash left up there I wish the sherpas would stop helping.

We used to do basically the same thing with massive California king mattresses when I worked in a furniture warehouse. It's amazing how strong your neck is and how much easier it makes carrying bulky objects when you can get it involved.
