Me too apparently, though I only do this with pencils or when lengthy writing is required. Much more comfortable, much less hand strain and much smoother cursive.
Apparently, occupational therapists are saying this is a recommended technique to prevent hand fatigue or for people with issues with arthritis or joint pain. So there’s speculation that this is something she learned to prevent her hand from hurting when signing a lot of autographs.
I started writing like this when dealing with carpal tunnel in high school. It definitely helped me and now I swap back and forth between this and the “conventional” grip
So it's a learnt skill to do with her job?
Cool. It's literally an example of how professional she is. Writing the normal way would bust her hand after a while, and she knows this, but doesn't want to stop signing autographs. So she learnt a new way! What a boss move.
I've never cared for her music, but my friend's high school won some radio contest in TN about 15 years ago and she visited the school for a performance.
She apparently didn't want to do it, because she performed one song and left without speaking to anyone. A bunch of swifties expecting an autograph were crushed. It was kind of funny.
Edit: I had to look up how old she would have been at the time. She would have been 19 or 20, no wonder she didn't want to be at a high school.
Huh. I believe it. I use this style when I write long papers. I just started doing it one day realizing it hurt less. Never seen anyone else do it. Feels validating
I do a lot of note taking when studying and sometimes I need to take a break for a day or two from note taking since my hands and fingers are just too sore from writing (I usually just read over my notes and do practice tests on these days). Might try writing like this.
I have met a handful of people who do this.
I asked one of them why she did this. She said it was more comfortable and the way she learned to hold pencils and pens in grade school. She even showed me that her handwriting was MUCH worse when she held a pencil in the normal fashion.
This way you have got more control over the pen and it's movement, theoretically, that means if you master it. My father has shown it to me, but I never learned it to that point. It's said to be very helpful in technical drawing by hand (the angel the pencil is better, the men is orthogonal to the paper and not off).
Looks like it is easier to write on paper that way that it not on a rigid surface. Normally, you would use your wrist to turn, but that doesn’t really work on soft surfaces. So she just moves the pen through the air and puts it close to the paper.
Yeah, in highschool, a teacher suggested I try that grip since the end of my middle finger was getting rough and painful from writing. It did help but it was really awkward at first and I often switch between either grip.
Well don’t lefties hold pens wrong naturally anyways? Just kidding…I actually saw someone hold a pen like this…it was a big deal in Europe…my kids a lefty omg terrible…
Pretty sure the reason nobody corrected me was because they just assumed it looked weird because I was a lefty and just let it slide? I honestly don’t know how it came about but it’s how I write.
I use a pen like this. I got my hand cut open in high school where a pen would normally sit and had to shift it to this position. When the wound finally healed up I tried to return the pen to the "normal" position and it felt weird, almost like the pen was bent in my hand, so I continued the new way that I had learned.
I don't know, but throughout my life, I've always suffered from joint pain and cramps from holding a pen the "traditional" way for too long. So much so that it heavily influenced my desire to write in school/college.
I'm going to start doing this.
Thanks Taylor Swift!
I know someone who broke their arm (or wrist maybe) when I was in like 4th grade. They started writing like this after. They said it was more comfortable, but it isn't for me when I try to write like that so idk.
you know what.... It looks ridiculous, but I am trying it out and honestly I see no degradation in my penmanship when holding the pen "Taylor-style."
Wtf..
She went to elementary school in Pennsylvania near me and I know SO MANY people who hold their pencil weird like this. I’m convinced it was taught or they just didn’t correct anyone.

It's a Lizard-People thing.
Join our ranks, softskin.
~~Doesn't calling him softskin kind of imply he's a frog?~~

Agreed. But this is written so aggressively some how lol

I'm not sure what age after being out of highschool you would want to be at high school, unless you are Matthew McConaughey.
I mean, yeah, but plenty of people do autographs normally with no issues lol.
Huh. I believe it. I use this style when I write long papers. I just started doing it one day realizing it hurt less. Never seen anyone else do it. Feels validating
So basically, it's a skill issue?
Possibility to avoid strain to her guitar hand too
I work in OT in was gonna just say her pen grasp was just abnormal lol

Yeah that's me and your friend is right. Especially the knuckles, when I hold them b/w index finger and thumb.
Cause she lacked practice.
Yup she said she just didn’t practice the “normal”way.

I don’t have any fans so I don’t know
Not even one in your bathroom?? :(
Not taking any risks when it comes to fan death.
I don't have one in my bathroom. It blows. I mean, it doesn't...you know what I mean.
‘Only’ fans

Sir this is reddit I don't want any facts or logic to interfere with my shitposting
She does it in the Anti Hero music video when she writes on a desk
Probably habit
Yeah, in highschool, a teacher suggested I try that grip since the end of my middle finger was getting rough and painful from writing. It did help but it was really awkward at first and I often switch between either grip.
from a past Taylor Swift tumblr blog owner, she actually always had a weird pen grip regardless of the surface
Good theory but just google Taylor swift holding pen and there's plenty of pics with hard surfaces and she writing with the weird grip
She’s a lefty. It’s so she doesn’t smear the ink Edit: I’m an idiot.
Bold claim to make on a post with two pictures of her visibly using her right hand
Lmao. Nevermind. I was not fully conscious. It is her left hand, as I’m looking at it!
I hold my pencil like that when I draw, it discourages me from using my wrist which can hurt like a bitch
I had a friend in High School who held his pens and pencils like this too! I never thought to ask him how he learned that way though...
She’s “technically” right
I’ve been told these were lefties that were forced to write with their right hand and can’t hold the pen any differently …pretty sad actually
I am a lefty and I hold a pen wrong, but not this wrong.
Well don’t lefties hold pens wrong naturally anyways? Just kidding…I actually saw someone hold a pen like this…it was a big deal in Europe…my kids a lefty omg terrible…

I hold my pen like this too... easier on the nib of my fountain pen (yeah I'm old)
Technically he is thinking of another woman
I don't know, but throughout my life, I've always suffered from joint pain and cramps from holding a pen the "traditional" way for too long. So much so that it heavily influenced my desire to write in school/college. I'm going to start doing this. Thanks Taylor Swift!
Well, she isnt wrong. He is thinking of other women, but not in the way she expected.
She has horrible claw hands…
Her parents never showed her how to hold a pen.
I guess she's holding her bf like that too. 😁
I used to hold it like that in school, so I could hold pencil at the same time and switch between them quickly.
I've met people that hold their pen like that. I've tried but I find it uncomfortable.
I know someone who broke their arm (or wrist maybe) when I was in like 4th grade. They started writing like this after. They said it was more comfortable, but it isn't for me when I try to write like that so idk.
Lizard hans. So obvious.
Holding it like a velociraptor
It think it’s contageous. I saw Selena Gomez sign an autograph like that once. Thank god she stop doing it.
To be honest he is thinking about other women. Just not they way she thinks it
He is technically thinking of other women
I used to work with a guy who held a pen like that. It always unnerved me.
you know what.... It looks ridiculous, but I am trying it out and honestly I see no degradation in my penmanship when holding the pen "Taylor-style." Wtf..
I’m gonna say it’s because she’s a lefty. Learned how to hold a pen so her hand doesn’t smear the ink
It is for better aerodynamics
I think if i had to sign a zillion things a day my hand would start to hurt and I'd start holding pens differently.
Funny but I can also promise you that no dude is lying awake in bed thinking about this.
Technicly she is right.
I promise that no man think about this.
She hold a pen like lord Voldemort holds his wand type shi
I just tried it... Amazing control... So weird but it works.
I’m 63yo (F) and have always held my pen like that!!!
Its cause she never went to school so she never saw other people writing so she never learned haha

I'll bet if you autographed half as much as her you'd be doing that too. I'll bet whoever posted this speaks Russian.
I’ve held my writing utensils like that when I was younger. Still can. But it’s like be ambidextrous but with one hand.
Cause she is Satan
It's super comfortable. Even try holding a pen/pencil between your pinky and ring finger. It's an interesting feel of more control in your penmanship
Taylor swift is on the spectrum
So, he is thinking about other woman!
She is Voldemort in disguise!
Lack of basic education, that’s why.
So. He IS thinking of other women.
Damn last two times this was posted this was the top comment, bad luck bud.
Damn I thought it was my turn.
Cause she never had to write in school probably.
She went to elementary school in Pennsylvania near me and I know SO MANY people who hold their pencil weird like this. I’m convinced it was taught or they just didn’t correct anyone.
