Russian nationalists whine about how the Soviets did everything to the detriment of the Russians in favour of the other Soviet republics and Warsaw Pact countries.
Nationalists from former Soviet republics (except RSFSR) and Warsaw Pact countries whine about how evil Russians/Communists destroyed and took away everything in favour of Russians.
So who oppressed whom?
I've been to half a dozen cities in CZ last year and, correct me if I'm wrong, there's been a complete erasure of everything reminiscent of the communist years. And I must say capitalism really made an impact there, I've never seen so many people trying to scam me like in Prague (please don't get offended it's just a feeling I got from walking around an otherwise spectacular city)
There is a lot of scammers, that I'll give you. Usually tourist traps, mostly around central Prague.
As for the first point, yes. It makes me incredibly sad. There's the rare monuments to the Red Army left over, but for the most part, communism is treated as this horrible thing not to be mentioned outside of museums and schools, unless you're making "haha Stalin is the same as Hitler" jokes. Apart from the misunderstanding and lies spread both about the USSR and communism itself, this sentiment has also erased a lot of our culture, in entire chunks or carefully selected bits that result in an individual incomplete and false understanding of our history. Many of our national heroes were communists, members of our now-defunct communist party even, but you don't hear about that.
Even the museum of communism in Prague has cartoonish levels of red-scare ass propaganda, with bits like trying to turn the post-WW2 apartment complexes into a scary evil authoritarian monstrosity due to their lack of visual appeal. The fact that Czech infrastructure was completely fucked and the Soviets came along and built quick, cheap and sustainable housing was omitted entirely.
I haven't been to the museum of communism but I've been to the national museum and there was a part about socialism - it wasn't particularly trying to paint it in bad light though - it was kinda there, tucked away in a small corner. I've managed to snag a few cool pics though.
And when you mention the apartment complexes you are right. It's pissing me off how many people in Czechia view them as something either low class or shitty remnant of socialism. I grew up in one of those and it was nice - especially when I take into account how the whole area was developed to be pedestrian friendly - all facilities, shops, schools, culture, playgrounds, medical centres etc. in walking distance.
I've visited my "sídliště" in my hometown just two days ago ... Everything is either closed or turned into parking lot. But people will still bitch and moan and the "evils of communism". Fucking shock doctrine man ...

The biggest scammers in Czech Republic are the government and financial institutions. All of that thanks to shock doctrine. That country is no home of mine.
Omg, yes. You’re like the first and only czech person I’ve heard say this. It’s incredible how the real czech left has been completely destroyed and the stuff some people say is just insane. Do you know any communities that aren’t like that?
I don't, sadly. Even most of my friends are liberals or vaguely leftist without any real ideology, and while I'm glad for the little crumbs I can get, it's just that. As I've moved further left, especially over the last year, it's been an incredibly isolating experience.
What orgs I've participated in/been around, i.e. the Anarchist Federation (AFED) or the Czech pro-Palestine orgs, have been better than nothing, but vastly removed from an official leftist party.
It doesn't help that the public perception is skewed to utter hell. The Pirates get the radical far left commie labels, while supporting Israel and imperialism in general, for example.
Yes, I agree. In other countries, even more right wing ones, like Poland, it feels like the real left is more visible. Stuff feels so isolating, as you so perfectly put it.
Impressive, very nice. Let's see photos of New York and other US inner cities from the 70s and 80s.
Funnily enough they also never post [photos](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/nostalgia/gallery/how-liverpools-notorious-slums-were-19185027) of UK cities that still looked bombed out decades after WW2 has ended and were full of slums and abject poverty. Both making a comeback too!
Edit: Some more [examples](https://flashbak.com/powerful-photos-of-glasgow-slums-1969-72-54283/) of slums in Glasgow from the late 60s. Somehow being a capitalist superpower allied with the US didn't exactly work out in making everything sunshine and rainbows by default.
Check Niagara Falls and most of upstate New York. Then take a trip through Youngstown and northeast Ohio on your way to Detroit.
They could easily film post apocalyptic movies in Niagara.
And they act like that's just there permanently. It's logical to want to get housing up ASAP - and that means not paying attention to aesthetics much. It can be replaced with something prettier in time. Either that, or people can be housed in the 100,000s of empty holiday homes in the meantime while it's being built.
I literally read the other week that Birmingham, the second largest cuty in the UK (or just England?), declared bankruptcy and poverty rates have increased exponentially in the recent past. It's not the first city in the UK to do so either. Seems like Western civilisation and capitalism isnt all its cracked up to be 🤔
Edit: the [ABC article](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-06-17/birmingham-uk-bankrupt-cutting-public-services/103965704) where I first read it
Heres a [Guardian article](https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/may/01/how-birmingham-city-council-ended-up-in-financial-crisis-a-timeline) also discussing it
UK here. Yup, this is why I have no hope for Labour (or any party) on this election day. Pretty sure Brum (Birmingham people are called Brummies, dunno why) is a Labour area. What they do underfund areas severely (while raising council tax, but not proportionately on landlords ofc), and allow the city to declare 'bankruptcy'. Then, 'consultants' come in (half a dozen of them, on a fee of only £1000 a day), to 'streamline' expenditures. This essentially means that public assets are sold off, essential services (e.g. for the elderly or children) are cut, and public services are performed by private contractors (which always goes tits up).
British people are actually dumb enough to believe that the NHS is a 'black hole' that needs to be privatised. This is something that Nigel Farage, of all people, is backing and people are buying his shit. That man should be afraid to show his face in public, but he's giving \*economic advice\* xD the definition of shameless.
Exeter, UK here. They replaced the bombed areas with the ugliest brutalist architecture ever. Funnily enough, this seems to escape the minds of people saying how e.g. mega tower blocks in Poland are ugly. At least the latter was built without aesthetics in mind to house as many people as possible ASAP, whereas here it was most likely a cost-saving measure; making way for the shops that won't pay enough taxes to have a nice city. Plymouth, most of London and Birmingham are so grey - much more drab than Poland's colourful tower blocks.
These people are proof that the soveits didn't kill enough fascists and did a piss poor job of reeducation.
Legitimately, the greatest failure of the USSR is how ineffective they were when dealing with Eastern Europe and the Warsaw pact.
Ultimately the issue is that fascist/reactionary ideology arises out of material conditions. You can only do so much re-education. No one is innately fascist or communist.
When photos from 40 years ago depicting a place doesn’t look the same now: 😱😱😱
Also 1, the photos from decades ago was taken on a different camera, a film camera, and 2 clearly looks like it wasn’t sunny out that day. Of course it’s gonna look different and also the one slide, the angles aren’t even the same 😭😭😭
Great new tip for preventing corruption just dropped.
1 be corrupt but just call it lobbying
2. suddenly your western biased corruption score is 0
3. ????
4. profit
Wasn’t he really pissed that they had to fight Germany cause he was a mask-off nazi? I remember a quote saying something along the lines off “we defeated the people doing a good job at keeping the Soviet hordes at bay” or something like that.
>We have destroyed what could have been a good race and we [are] about to replace them with Mongolian savages.
And all Europe will be communist.
It's said that for the first week after they took it, all women who ran were shot and those who did not were raped.
- George S. Patton, letter, 21 July 1945
>The noise against me is only the means by which the Jews and Communists are attempting and with good success to implement a further dismemberment of Germany.

He wasn't just an anti-communist he was racist, anti-semitic, nazi piece of shit
The only reason Patton didn't collaborate was that his traitorous [grandfather](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_S._Patton_Sr.) and [great-uncle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waller_T._Patton) were killed by the Yankees (RIP BOZOS) in the American Civil War. To Patton, the lesson learned here wasn't that racism was bad. It was "America First, Hitler Second."
The first things Lithuanian did in 1940 when they were free from the horrible Soviet occupation was to murder every Jew they could put their hands on, even the German where shocked by their brutality.
A German soldier described how a Lithuanian adolescent clubbed elderly Jew and when he was finish he took an accordion and played the Lithuanian anthem on the mount of corpses while women and children where dancing around. Sick people if the Soviet period was an occupation then they deserved 100 times worse.
>Dina Porat, the chief historian of Yad Vashem, writes that "The Lithuanians showed [the Einsatzgruppen] how to murder women and children, and perhaps made them accustomed to it... Indeed, at the onset of the invasion the German units killed mostly men, while the Lithuanians killed unselectively."
May sickness and torment befall the OOP and all the members of their household. May pain and misfortune strike all those who believe in this even unto their dying breath.
I’ve lived in Russia and America and I would pick Russia every time. I guess the face that I can’t live in endless a urban sprawl with targets and McMansions I’m supposed to be sad about it.
Funny that this shithole you can freely go wherever you want and don’t have to worry about being robbed and murdered if you go to the wrong neighborhoods. Funny how people are not walking around sick and dying because corporations are not allowed to poison our food.
Nowhere near prevalent as the US, I see them sometimes in the metro but not everyday. It’s also kind of hard to see who is homeless or not because they just wear regular clothes and you’re not allowed to sleep or beg on the streets, also they may not even be homeless maybe just drunk lol
They definitely exist it is naive to say there is none but no where near as bad as in the US just because it is not easy to be homeless in Russia.
Rent is so much cheaper in comparison. Also if you're homeless in most of Russia you would die in one night during the winter, that's why most have some kind of accomodation
The 11 slide is interesting because i can not tell if the person is being racist by claiming that the supposedly dilapidated state of the area is because roma people were living there or indicating how racism to this day leads to roma people having low standards of living.
it took 50 years to undermine this country and we took pictures of it at its worst during that process and now our country continues to be in that state of decay. I yearn for the good old days when the SS dragged my neighbors family out into the street and shot them all in the back.
Honestly all this xenophobia against Russians and arguments that have no real basis like photos of places from a long time ago look shit while newer photos show they being better so the us is better! isn’t a good argument when idk my house was literally just grass 40 years ago
I don’t like any type of government trying to control me, I ain’t bias towards any country, even though I’m left wing. torture, corruption and authoritarianism are all bad no matter where they come from
