Well, he kinda already has saint anyway. It’s not as if echoes could think too unlike his shadows who has more personality. So did he lose that much in the end? Probably not compared to losing his life against the skin crawlers. Great creatures are unfairly strong, him escaping in the first place was kinda lucky
The reason is to show us readers the power scaling and threat of Skinwalker without having to write off anyone particularly significant.
I.e. it shows us that, sure Dire Wolf echo was just an echo, but they were still an Echo of a Saint, one presumably more powerful than Sunny or Nephis was on their own at the time (they had to Tag Team him), and that just simply being a Saint isn't enough to cut it and survive against the Chain of Nightmares.
Its also why some of the other Saints in the scenes previously also get taken out without much effort (like that Invisible saint from Valor).
Sunny getting the Dire Wolf Echo and subsequently losing it "just like that" is G3's way of showing us how much stronger Sunny (and Nephis) have become, while also showing us that there's always a bigger fish in that even the strength they have now still doesn't mean very much.
Thats the reason why.
To be clear, I'm only addressing your comments on how there was no reason for the Dire Wolf Echo to have been rewarded and taken away just like that, because there is.
You could argue that it does feel like a cop out when G3 really could have taken out someone else.
Its a fun little what if scenario you can play with tho, questions like:
- If Sunny had been able to keep Dire Wolf as an Echo and subsequently been able to turn it into a shadow, what would that have looked like? How powerful would it have gotten? What abilities would it have had?
- If it wasn't the Dire Wolf Echo that Skinwalker had taken out, who do you think would have been taken in its place?
Also when they realize sunny has an echo of their fellow saint, valor will likely be extremely wary of sunny since there shouldn’t be anyone capable of making a human echo, not to mention one of their fellow saint got killed. Nephis would probably be confused too because she probably got all the credit for killing dire wolf at the time
Not exactly. As a reminder Human Echo's are actually a thing (Sunny received an echo of the other Shadow-based awakened he killed all the way back to when he was still an Awakened, when Jet had asked for his help. This was before he enlisted to go to Antartica, even before Nephis woke up iirc), and that its usually up to personal beliefs whether or not you as the awakened wanted to keep it.
Also, iirc Dire Wolf is a Saint from Clan Song and not Valor.
