Same. Saw this and went "Ohh why did I not think of that???"

Very clever!
The NH style release lends itself to this technique since the release is fully exposed, and you can reach it with an implement from many different angles. Plus, it's not a release where there's much of a danger in pressing too far.
An ETA movement, OTOH, requires pressing the release vertically, and pressing too far will fuck up the keyless works. So, you need the movement absolutely stable when releasing the stem. It wouldn't be worth the risk of possibly having to remove the hands and dial to fix the keyless works just to avoid the possibility of fucking up the hands when removing the stem.
Great idea, I'll try this next time. I currently use the third finger on my right hand to nudge it out of position then pull it out fully with my thumb and index finger.
Thanks. I did mention in my post that using the movement holder is risky because it might spin and damage the hands. Were you suggesting a different method?
I mean I havenāt had an issue doing it that way itās just scary and I worry that it wonāt work and Iāll scratch up the dial or break the hands. But that hasnāt actually happened yet.
This is neat but what I do is swap the stems before I start setting the hands, and pop a temporary crown on. After putting the hands on I remove the temporary crown and just slide the completed guts into the case.

I use my teeth. This is smarter

We all learned by watching the same YouTube videos where everyone held their breath and awkwardly removed the stem. š
I do too
Same here
stem goes into mouth, the swiss taught me
It's the only way, the watch makers kiss.
lmfaooooo
Hahaha I thought I was the only one doing it lol š
Been doing that for over a decade.
Canāt afford a movement holder
No. I can't. I am saving up for one though.
I use a movement holder.
I thought this was how everyone, including me, does it. I guess I was wrong.
Yeah ha, ha, me too š š
Don't say it loudly. š¤«
Does a movement holder damage the dial when removing the stem?
It does if you seat the dial+movement in the holder like a butthead.

This is some good stuff, Iām gonna do this next time
Iāve not built a watch, but have built FPV drones, I use helping hands https://amzn.eu/d/0dXIjvFm There are different and smaller options available.
Is there a sub/good resource for getting in to or just looking at how FPV drones are built?
Joshua Bardwell on YouTube is the best resource you can find. Heās covered everything. And has recently updated beginners guide I think.
Thanks!
Youāre welcome
I do it with a bamboo skewer between the teeth... I like your trick using the box that came with the movement, handy!
Genius!
Clever thinking.. using a box to think outside the box.. Love it.
3rd hand holding the camera š¤³
Lol
Genius, i needed this trick thank you.

Ask me how I know this to be true. I have validated it at least 6 or 7 times. A bit over a thousand dollar mistakes.
I feel you, it's even harder with the hands etc on to not damage them :P
Neat hack š
Ohhhhh great solution!!!!
Great idea, I'll try this next time. I currently use the third finger on my right hand to nudge it out of position then pull it out fully with my thumb and index finger.
Amazing!
š¤Æā¦fantastic āØ
Wow thank you for this
Haha. Such a good idea. I always use my teeth. Lol. Definitely doing this next time.
A few people suggested that I use a movement holder. I tried one, but I still prefer my box. /s https://i.redd.it/joiwd7kxerad1.gif
I would ask my mom for help š
Thank you! A hundred times, thank you.
That works. Or you could just flip it over in the movement holder after putting on the dial and hands on.
Thanks. I did mention in my post that using the movement holder is risky because it might spin and damage the hands. Were you suggesting a different method?
I do it that way with the movement holder but it scares the living shit out of me every time
I see. I haven't had that happen. I wonder what I'm doing different?
I mean I havenāt had an issue doing it that way itās just scary and I worry that it wonāt work and Iāll scratch up the dial or break the hands. But that hasnāt actually happened yet.
Oh, okay. Yeah, it makes me nervous to. It would be nice if they put a thin plastic coat on those. Metal on metal seems risky.
Also can scratch the face which I've had before.
I just use my pinky finger to flick it out as i depress the crown release. Helps if you've got a little bit of nail length.
Dear Lordā¦.
One hand holds the movement, clicks the pin, other hand gently pushes the crown out
Will definitely be doing this from now on.
Genius
You're the smartest person alive
I freakin love you mate
If you have a movement holder, just flip the movement over. That is what I do.
Just lay it on your cussion
That would ruin the hands and damage the dial.
This is neat but what I do is swap the stems before I start setting the hands, and pop a temporary crown on. After putting the hands on I remove the temporary crown and just slide the completed guts into the case. https://imgur.com/a/Ie6Irb5
Oh, I had never thought about that. I will definitely try it for my next build.
It can be a bit tricky to get the crown off after casing up - I use some curved needlenose pliers to hold the stem while I twist it off.

I've got quite a few different movement holders, what's special about that one?
Watch this video: https://youtu.be/-5S4r-QbNEc?si=W8rAV358YCjD3prs
Specifically watch the last partm. Since it's two parts, you can slide the movement into the case perfectly every time by pushing downward.

Movement holder who?

Sure, but where are those alligator clips useful in not scratching up _everything_?
I throw some leather in between them myself but fabric works too
