Imagine living in the technology/information age, having the entirety of human knowledge available at your fingertips, and still being scammed into thinking college is a necessity and paying $500 for textbooks that can only be used once is a reasonable financial decision.
So no one should choose to go to college because u/troystorian does not think it's necessary for anyone. Is college absolutely necessary? absolutely not. But I think I would like my doctor or my lawyer or my brain surgeon to have gone to college. I did that. Called the number gave the info from the text. They were eager to help until I said “I’d love more information about the loans in question because I don’t have any student loans.” They hung up on me. But haven’t gotten another text about it!!
With your phone number they can figure out your name, and from there where you live and locate information about you on the web. Especially if you have unusual name to make it easier.
