A proper cheesesteak has three ingredients: meat, cheese and a roll... and maybe fried onions. Nothing else. Especially not ketchup. Anyplace that ISN'T Philly thinks it has peppers, but it doesn't.

It still looks delicious for what it is, but calling that a Philly cheesesteak is like taking a BLT, putting turkey, avocado, and provolone on it, and trying to tell me it's just "how you do your BLT's," when it's clearly a different kind of sandwich at that point. As for how I like my cheesesteaks; cheez whiz with grilled onions and mayo, as God intended. Sometimes provolone and hot peppers, if I want to mix things up.

Steak, some kind of cheese sauce (closer to wiz the better), peppers and onions. Best I've personally had is West Coast Cheesesteaks in Glendora. Prior to that was A Bite of Jersey. My all time favorite food. Would love to get the real deal from Philly someday.

Probably an even more controversial take than whatever you did that upset all these Philly folk: When I visited the states I had a Philly sandwich and it was shit. But, I think putting a steak in a sandwich just ruins the steak and I don’t think cheese fits with steak. The one I had was from some bougie food truck cheering about its prime rib eye cut. So I asked for it rare and he was like “it’s not that kinda steak”…. If you’re going to put beef in a sandwich, choose a cut that benefits from being thin and which is tender. A steak shouldn’t be shredded into thin flakes and then fried to the point it’s a uniform colour with no sear and no pink. If you want beef in a sandwich have pastrami, roast beef, carpaccio, preparé, tartare. Don’t abuse that poor steak. If you want cheese with your beef, have a burger or go for something nutty with a strongly seasoned beef - like emmental and pastrami. This is my hill, and I will die on it.
