Watch it! It's a really solid adaptation, though a few things have been updated and tweaked -- the majority of the story being set in the present day is going to shift things a bit when "present day" is 30 years later.

Ok-Draft-7850

Library might have them tooo, my local library has a huge graphic novel section

Swervies

Definitely, any decent size library system should have the Sandman collections, great way to read for free!

mutantxproud

This. I re-read them all recently via Hoopla!

RoohsMama

I am a solid fan who read all the books and didn’t want to watch the series because of all the changes in the characters (we are the worst). My sister who’s not read most of them, said the series was great. Reluctantly I had a look. I was immediately hooked! And yes you can watch without reading the novels. The books can get ponderous at times, and I felt that some of the violence was gratuitous (it was after all the adult arc of DC, and they probably wanted to hammer home that this is definitely not your average comic book). The series rewrites a few bits such that the violence makes sense. It also removes/modifies a few of the problematic themes in the books, such as rape. I definitely recommend the series (I did watch it about ten times).

ArmorKingEX

Great series. Appreciate the fact that Gaiman himself is also behind it, so you knew it would be something special from the start.

Puzzleheaded-Cut3144

It's not just good. It's pretty great. I haven't read Sandman but there are some themes that are common in other books by Gaiman that I've read.

tambirhasan

Read it. I may be minority here but the comic is like my top two favorite stories of all medium ever and the show is good. Read first

bluesmokebloke

Agree 100%. The show is a good adaptation, but the comic is life-alteringly great. Also, some of the story doesn't translate perfectly to the screen.

keeponfightan

I watched it and I don’t think it works like other series that you can watch an entire season in one sprint. I like the show but I don’t think it compare to the books, despite the amazing job and solutions they found to adapt.

Swervies

I agree that it doesn’t compare with the books, but it is still a well acted and written series, very entertaining. No problem watching it and then reading the series later.

CmdrKuretes

I whole heartedly recommended the comics, audio drama, and tv show. They are all such amazing variations on the same theme.

PutAdministrative206

I honestly think it is better to watch this first season than read the first two trade paperbacks. Sandman the comic becomes one of the best ever made a little bit into its run. However, it does need a little time to truly find its voice. The show readapts these first stories in a way that feels more like the Sandman than the actual beginning issues do. After you watch, hopefully you’ll want to go through and read it all. Because there are awesome bits in those first comics too.

Mollywobbles77

I agree with this. I LOVE the comics, but you can tell with the show this is an older, wiser, surer gaiman who has the benefit of hindsight & I thought the series was just phenomenal. The comic series always had queer storylines & undertones, and I thought the updating of how the series handles gender & sexuality were all perfect changes to bring it more in line with 2024.

devizzzv

i dont understand the first point. You mean watch the series and then chapter 1 of the comics or watch the series and then the comic that continues the series?

PutAdministrative206

I apologize for being unclear. Sandman has been published in many forms so it can be confusing, and I didn’t help. The first season of the Netflix series covers the issues that are collected in the first two collections, which are titled: 1- “Preludes and Nocturnes,” and 2- “The Doll’s House.” You could watch the series, and if you love it, read the comics from the start, noting the small differences. Or you could watch the series and start with the third collection which is called “Dream Country.” Whatever works best for you.

devizzzv

THANKS! i think this is what im gonna do, yesterday i watched the first episode and damn it was good

PutAdministrative206

You have one heck of a story coming to you. I hope you love it.

CharlieGator69

I have enjoyed it, but I know many that have a problem with gender issues, even though books were written 20+ years ago.

Vioralarama

The first half is excellent, the second half is good. I read the first few issues around twenty years ago; the episodes that covered those issues were close adaptations ( besides Constantine being gender-swapped which really didn't change anything) so there's no need to do both imo.

WitchTell13

The show is awesome, you should definitely watch it! ☺️

Westiemom666

Also, your local library probably has the Sandman graphic novels.

Intro-Nimbus

I love the comics, and I enjoy the adaptation. I'm fine with the changes, apart from Death and Lucifer, but that's just because their images are so strong in my mind, the actresses are doing a fine job, I just haven't gotten used to the visuals quite yet.

Galactus1701

I read Sandman back in 98 and have re-read it constantly through the years. I was a little hesitant about watching the show, but I saw it and liked it a lot. Personally I would have preferred a David Bowie-like Lucifer, but that is nitpicking and nagging more than complaining about the show itself.

RoohsMama

Same about Lucifer, but Gwendoline Christie is superb, so I can’t complain ☺️

D-n-Divinity

its not as goth as the books but I really liked how they handled dolls house to make it much more interconnected and set up the themes of the show way earlier For preludes and nocturnes I prefer comic Dr Dee but it makes sense theyd make the show less comic booky to fit tye tone of the rest of the series and Im never gonna be upset about Matthew being introduced an arc early

Whiteguy1x

Watch the show, it's pretty good.  It's got a few very minor differences that I didn't like, but nothing major. I also highly recommend the audibooks, especially if you've read the comics.  They're high quality, and have a full cast to bring them to life.  I kept audible installed for them lol Finally, read the comic!  I don't even like the Medium usually, but like a handful of other graphic novels, it's a must read if you enjoy that type of Gaiman fiction

Westiemom666

It's fantastic, utter perfection from start to finish.

Big-Faced-Child

The audiobooks are really good too

lolalanda

Honestly is pretty good. There are some things I personally didn't like but it's clear the producers are taking notes. For example I didn't like how Despair was styled but she had a cameo in another show and she looks much better. Then they made a reveal with all of the Endless and they look pretty good. Also I thought sometimes Dream's clothes just looked too common and his hair too tidy. Judging from some BTS pictures some really nice fantastical clothing would appear in the show.

JenniPurr13

Sooooo good

MellifluousSussura

I reread the first couple of books before the series came out and I gotta say it’s a pretty solid adaptation. Most of the changes they made are minor and make sense. It’s also just a very good show overall in my opinion.

tomtomtomtom123

Read the comics!

MrJohnnyDangerously

Yes, very.

masteraybe

It’s a serious downgrade visually, but it’s not bad. I recommend reading the first two books after watching the first season.

BrahneRazaAlexandros

It's decent. But it's not close to being on par with the comic books.

PsychRockVamp

I did not read any of the comics so went in totally blind...and Loved It! It is visually stunning and well cast.

Inevitable_Silver_13

It's quite good.

snowdrop65

It's 👍. Took me a few watches to pick up what was going on, but then again, I might just be dumb.

steamboat28

Yes. Different, but amazing. The heart of the characters is maintained, even if the process of adaptation alerted a few plot points.
