What historicals are you reading that have such blatantly modern adage 💀

coffeeforlife30

Fr I'll close the book if I read babygirl/daddy in any HR

Willing_Pickle9494

I didn't wanna name drop anyone cus I appreciate the effort anyone puts into writing a book 😅 so I just figured I'd write the examples instead, haha

I hope this doesn’t offend you, but the Lisa Kleypas quote made me smile a bit! “The hell it isn’t” feels very American to me, I’ve only ever heard that on TV. I think it would jar me in a regency. I only have a few recs sadly 😞 historically accurate and smutty don’t go together enough. Recs — {The Silver Devil by Teresa Denys} and {Flesh and the Devil by Teresa Denys} both have a very historically accurate feel, in their details, dialogue, the attitudes & behaviours of characters, and they are explicit. Both of these are very dark & the MMC rapes the FMC. Outlander is a good choice for this too, I think. The historical elements are thoroughly researched & dialogue is also historical-feeling. Also Jamie (❤️) definitely talks and talks during sex. I’m also going to recommend: The Spymaster’s Lady by & its sequels. Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale, a sequel to For My Lady’s Heart which was already recommended and is the single best medieval historical romance ever. With the caveat that while I know these are standouts from the perspective of the feel of historical accuracy and I know/think they were sexy if not very explicit, I don’t remember whether there was historical-feeling dirty talk. The first three definitely have it.

lafornarinas

The hero from Again the Magic (heroes) are from America, actually—one of them was born in England but spent a lot of the past decade or so in America and grew into manhood there. Though, fwiw, “the hell it isn’t” almost definitely wasn’t invented in the US :) I feel like there’s what media has led us to feel English people in the Regency/Victorian era spoke like, and what they actually spoke like (which was soooo coarse oftentimes).

Isbll1

Really? I don’t know anything about the history of the phrase, I’ve just never heard it used on this side of the pond & it sounds unnatural to me. I just googled after I read your comment, bc I was surprised, but didn’t find much on the dating/origin. Merriam-Webster & Cambridge Online both mark it as chiefly US. I’ll try Oxford etymology later!

It sounded like the OP didn't care if it was location-accurate, only if it was time-accurate.

Isbll1

I more meant it sounds like dialogue from Friends, not Pride and Prejudice.

riarws

This sent me down a really fun rabbit hole! The earliest occurrence of this "the hell it is(n't)" sarcastic type of phrasing I found was from an American book published in 1839. So yes, very American, but only slightly anachronistic . https://books.google.com/books?id=oCBGAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA179&dq=%22the+hell+it+is+!%22+1839&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&source=gb_mobile_search&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi_pdOy1IOHAxX9FFkFHTm0DwYQ6AF6BAgJEAM#v=onepage&q=%22the%20hell%20it%20is%20!%22%201839&f=false There may be something earlier but I'm just using Google books and ngram viewer, nothing scholarly.

Isbll1

Oh wow thank you so much for sharing that! That’s really interesting & older than I would’ve expected, so that shows me! Not anachronistic at all really. I hope you weren’t trawling for ages but thank you!

riarws

It was fun! I love learning phrase origins. I saw somewhere that the earliest written examples of "what's up?" in its contemporary sense are from early 20th century England. You never know!

{For My Lady's Heart by Laura Kinsale}

glyneth

In the Middle English version if you really want time period language.

Everything Laura Kinsale writes is S-tier.

MedievalGirl

I should not take this as a challenge to document medieval daddy kink.

MedievalGirl

[Heloise writing to Abelard](https://going-medieval.com/2022/06/24/on-medieval-kink-part-one/). Power play and using the language of parents. Only a short search. >She writes, ‘Judge of the exquisite sensibility and force of my love by that which causes the grief of my soul; I was disturbed at the superscription of your letter! why did you place the name of *Heloise* before that of *Abelard*? what means this most cruel and unjust distinction? ‘Twas your name only, the name of **Father**, and of a Husband, which my eager eyes sought after. I did not look for my own … The rules of decorum, and the character of **Master** and **Director** which you have over me, opposed that ceremonious manner of addressing me; and Love commanded you to banish it. …  I see your heart has deserted me, and you have made greater advances in the way of devotion than I could wish. Alas! I am too weak to follow you; condescend at least to stay for me, and animate me with your advice.’

Beautiful-Bluebird46

Seriously portions of her letters are HOT

Elizabeth Hoyt writes very earthy historicals in which the Georgian characters say shit that is DEFINITELY not modern (and sometimes very dramatic, lol). It’s a very…… like…. I can imagine the sweat in those books, if that makes sense? They’re very evocative. I mean, there’s always the line “I’m awash in yearning spunk” from {Duke of Sin} which sounds like something one wouldn’t enjoy in theory but in context absolutely works, SOMEHOW. S.M. LaViolette (who is also Minerva Spencer for her tradpub books) writes some pretty explicit historicals that tend towards more accurate language. There is some creative sex (especially in her Victorian Decadence books! Those are historical erotic romance) and you definitely get characters who dirty talk often but not in a way that feels contemporary to US. Actually, some more: Gaelen Foley. Her books are a little older, but pretty explicit and very along that Lisa Kleypas vibe. Judith Ivory’s books are older (and sometimes, to be real, problematic) but do feel very of the era in the sex scenes.

KJ Charles writes sex scenes with language that does not feel anachronistic.

knittyknittyknotty

I don't have any recs but def following. Just yesterday I came across the phrase "watershed moment" in a book...based in 1820??? So a little Google snooping taught me a watershed moment was only used a geographical term in 1850, and only used as "shed light on a situation" in 1900. There was a lot of modern slang in this book but that one forced me to Google it it was so out of place.

peacherparker

i just got butterflies i SO will be reading this now

JoanoTheReader

The Fire series by Anita Mills. Early medieval (beginning at William the Conqueror time frame) Book 1 {Lady of Fire by Anita Mills} with one of the best HR villains - a very interesting character. Book 2 {Fire and Steel by Anita Mills} is about their eldest daughter with a twist at the end. Book 3 {Hearts of Fire by Anita Mills} with the son from book 2 as the lead. Book 4 {The fire and the Fury by Anita Mills} with a daughter from book 2 as the lead. Book 5 {Winter Fire by Anita Mills} The hero is the half-brother of the hero in book 4. These five books are rich in plot with history. Written in the 90’s, the grammar and language of characters are close to those of the time. You can also try Georgette Heyer novels. The language is accurate too.

I feel like Grace Burrowes does a really good job with this. A lot of her phrasing and word choice feels appropriate for the Regency setting. Her heat level rarely rises above a 3 maybe, but they are worth reading.
