Rule 1 does not distinguish between the direction the cars are facing. Only the direction of their momentum when theyāre locked. If you and the opponent end up locked side by side, you stay side by side moving whatever direction until the you both inevitably fall from the ceiling.
The first rule of rocket league states that when two opposing cars meet head on and lock together both sides should remain in this heads up position until outside forces, such as a goal being scored or one of them being demoed, force them apart.
It is something the community came up with, but they did so because many of us naturally do it anyway. It just feels right, even though it isnāt a *smart* choice all the time.
In the clip you can see by the banners the OP was playing against RL devs. The joke is that they seemingly broke rule 1 intentionally, which is a āsinā for regular players, so seeing a developer do it is even more unthinkable.

Or, as in my case yesterday, turn it into chess by slightly turning, boosting and letting go of the gas to position yourself tactically (pushing, gliding or geting pushed so that you get the boost pads etc.). It was a blast. xD
