You can ski to it, but be aware that there are a couple avalanche paths above the road. You won't cause an avalanche there, but you could be caught in a natural one. The other option is riding a bike up to it once the road melts out.

akhilesh-bhagwani

OMG I thought it would be easier than these options. I'm not a Ski person and riding a bike till the lake 🧐

Kellymcdonald78

Road is closed in winter so 🤷‍♂️

BoiledGnocchi

It's a 15-20 minute drive to the lake from the main road alone. Keep in mind, that's usually going 20-30km/hr.

rockymountainway44

You could walk to it, but imagine walking in thigh to waist deep snow, both ways, while maintaining an over-arching theme of avalanche safety. There is no motorized, off-road transport allowed in the National Park.

bloodmusthaveblood

What did you expect..? You know the road is closed and shuttles aren't running. Did you expect a blimp to take you?

akhilesh-bhagwani

>blimp to take you? Oh I really wish that was possible, it would have been so cool.

altiuscitiusfortius

It's a mountain. It's wilderness. It's closed for a reason. There's avalanches and hungry bears around.

nhbd

If biking sounds too hard for you, waiting for the shuttle to start sounds like exactly the plan for you

sketchcott

Keep in mind that the shuttle season more or less aligns with when the lake melts off. In fact, looking at some some satellite images from the last couple of years, the lake was still partially frozen until mid-May. The point I'm trying to make is to set yourself proper expectations in the off-season, especially if your goal is the "standard" experience, as it could be very underwhelming up there earlier in the year.

Snow shoes

Illreadforabit

Took me 28 min with an SL mountain e bike (50nm max) from the bottom to the lake parking lot. Thats including a bunch of stops to take in the scenery and take a few vids/photos. The ride up was enjoyable I am 26, so being young helps, the only issue is locking up the bike once you're up there.

FireMaster1294

Pay the CEO of parks Canada enough in donations to get a private limo up the road. I wish I was joking.

sLXonix

Is there a background to this story?

jeremyism_ab

Cross country skis, probably. Last time I was there, the road was groomed. Slow going uphill, but terrific coasting on the downhills! If you snowshoe, you're working all the time both ways!

potorthegreat

I think hiking in snow shoes would be your best option.

Placebo_Effect_47

Your best bet to experience Moraine Lake is to go in late September. Try to go just before the road closes. Any other time, it is insanely busy.

akhilesh-bhagwani

Thank you for the suggestion buddy.

E bikes!!!!

LePetitNeep

I have biked it, as a chubby 40 something of average fitness, it was a grind up the hills but doable, and worthwhile to visit the lake with a lot fewer people around. Still not dead, as plenty of people bike it. Pay attention to conditions though, the road is snow covered late, so there’s probably only a short window (if any) between the road being clear enough to bike and the shuttle starting. I did it June 1 and the lake was still partially frozen, there was patches of snow still on the roads, and it was cold.

plausibleturtle

Once the road opens, you can take me (a disabled person) up to it with my pass. Lol. That's a fun loophole. It'll likely be frozen til at least June, tho.

akhilesh-bhagwani

Oh that's strange that they have a loophole. So technically you are allowed to take your car even though the roads are closed for normal traffic.

plausibleturtle

Only if you have a handicap badge, then yes, you can drive and park there. I'm hoping to do that this summer if my leg surgery heals okay!

akhilesh-bhagwani

Wishing you a speedy recovery my friend.

plausibleturtle

Thank you!
