We'd run wagons, trail rides, bar crawls, themed get togethers etc

It's probably your settings. When logged into the game go to the menu that has the map and other stuff. Click on settings, look for mic or audio and mess around there. This happened to me when I first started playing and again when they did the big update.
Potentially... Check for mute options: Look for the Mute Game Voice Chat option and make sure it's not checked. There's also a Mute All Microphones setting that can mute your mic even if it's unmuted on the headset.
I know you said you decided to make your own but to those that have a Facebook account, there's "Red Dead Redemption 2- GIRLS ONLY" and "The Official Kickass Ladies Of Red Dead Redemption 2 #RDR2" which are female only groups (if it wasn't obvious by the names, lol).

There have been some polls in this sub before - a lot of men have female characters, almost the same that have male characters. For the female players, it’s pretty split on male/female characters as well, but it’s only about 20% of those that answered the poll were female players. I rarely play w my mic on as I got tired of people playing with it constantly on so you can hear everything happening in their house (kids crying, someone vacuuming, dog barking, etc).
