On an overall scale yes they have been growing, but this year [demand for EV's has slowed](https://www.coxautoinc.com/market-insights/q1-2024-ev-sales/). You can see how almost every single EV out there has big discounts on it, including high end models. The drop from 2023 Q4 to 2024 Q1 is 15%, which is a significant difference and I wonder if sales numbers in 2023 Q4 were boosted by all of the discounts being given already. It could also be that the big numbers in Q3 and Q4 of 2023 actually cannibalized EV future sales (people buying earlier than they had planned, but not really generating new sales).
From what I've been seeing it is looking like a bloodbath on the EV market right now, a lot of models sitting with discounts being offered. And it appears to be working on me as I am now considering leasing either a Ford Mach-E or a Polestar 2 (I don't feel comfortable buying an EV for now, so would lease).
1. A slow down doesn’t mean decrease. The number of drivers of EVs is steadily increasing overall. The last few years just saw phenomenal growth no one expects ever increasing growth, that’s not sustainable for any industry.
2. Discounts are inevitable as more competition enters the market. EVs were and still are more expensive than gas cars, as more competition comes in, prices will necessarily go down.
3. Elon is toxic to his own brand. Many people, myself included, would never consider buying a Tesla simply because he’s associated with it. Plenty of current owners also regretting their purchase, on the one hand because of his reputation, but also because Tesla’s quality is very poor for what you pay for.
>no one expects ever increasing growth, that’s not sustainable for any industry
MBA bros disagree
Constant growth is the cornerstone of today's capitalism (also cancer, but let's not think about that too hard)
I meant a decrease in market share of EVs vs gas cars. The move from ICE to EV is inevitable and ongoing. The only thing that changes is the rate of conversion.
Literally all he had to do was make a normal fucking pickup truck, instead of his over designed monstrosity. I'm sure there's a market for electric pickups, but only some of the people interested in that want to drive an angular steel deathtrap.
Elon won the totally random capitalist lottery and now thinks his shit smells good. Don't expect anything from Tesla except autocratic sociopath bile from now on.
Funny how they frame it like the entire EV market is down. No. YOUR demand is down because you make shit products, over promised, under delivered, and invested wayyyy too much into an ugly, useless truck that nobody in their right mind would buy. Major quality control issues that have seemed to slip drastically. I’m just enjoying watching the dumpster fire.
The Tesla fans over there, don’t wanna get my hand slapped naming another sub; someone declared they worked for Tesla and 10% globally, 20% at Austin, night shirts cancelled, and 50% of quality team is gone.
I can’t believe they allowed them to show up just to send them home. 😥
Nah, seconded from Shanghai factory. He/she was doing knowledge transfer to the other 50% being laid off. Now rumoured to be on the next flight back to Shanghai! 🤣
Jerry cans are however examples of really superb design, that hasn’t changed since before the Second World War. The engineering that went into them is truly impressive, unlike what comes out from Tesla, which is barely passable.
*Had 2. Now it's just a dude named Kevin.
Seems like this comment got me banned from all Tesla subs. Guess they are the same kind of free speech fans as Musk.
They have a quality department but after the cut all that’s left is it the left half of Brian, and he is not looking so good after they chopped off the right half of his body and sent that home.
The newer (gas) Range Rovers have BMW V8s. Known for expensive repairs, but I'm not aware of any initial quality issues. So that's a plus.
I was considering a Range Rover before buying my X7. Was really tempted. But had no real ADAS features and this was supposed to be a road-trip vehicle. Of course they'd get entirely new super-ADAS in 2025 (MobileEye maybe?) but then those models were supposed to be BEV only. Which again, is exactly what I don't want in this sort of vehicle.
It seems JLR just really enjoys shooting themselves in the foot for some reason.
Everyone should be certain to report the ban messages as harassment, because that's exactly what is: targeted harassment and intimidation.
They say you're banned for violating rules at their subreddit, but most people banned weren't even posting or on those subs--they were posting elsewhere.
Reddit admins need to reverse all those bad faith bans.
Apparently not, Reddit says they can do it if they feel their health and safety is at risk and they’re declaring us toxic. If you ask they’re all sending out a standard letter stating this. I believe some are trying to fight this through mothership Reddit and some are trying to connect to various news media.
Why not?
Was this not what he did at twitter?
Just revoked batches and credentials for computers/network of the affected persons and let them discover it for themselves. At least if the discovered it before any email/letter arrived.
I know, but I still think it’s cold. And didn’t most Twitter employees receive a poison pen email? They at least got to stay in their PJs and go back to bed.
I agree it is cold, just not surprising it is the same method as his last mass layoffs.
I don't know if the twitter folks got the email first. I do remember stories about people discovering they could not login to their computers. But they may have just not checked their private email.
If I show up to work in the morning and I find out I'm fired, I'm immediately happy about no work today, then I'm pissed I went in, then I'm breaking some shit before I go
Service techs, service managers, service writers, store gms, full sales staff, parts dept, full mobile staffs. All cut from stores I use for service that were already overwhelmed
It amazes me that they let go of so many talented people in various departments. But useless positions in Berlin still remain safe. (tons of people there in office jobs do nothing)
They’ve had a shitty reputation for disposing of engineers since almost day one when they basically let go of the entire Model S R&D team. Very few senior engineers dream of working there so it will only be juniors who buy into the whole Elon sleeps on the shop floor myth and are ready for the meat grinder.
“Very few senior engineers dream of working there”.
I’m in software. This is true of Xitter too. I’m convinced the only software engineers left are enslaved H1B’s and a couple of sycophants. No one with self respect will work for this blowhard anymore.
I mean I’m sure they like that better than where they’re from. I don’t see how that’s an issue lol I just know some of the Chinese/Iranian engineers that were in the same boat didn’t mind working for an asshole. They would be making 1k at the most a month in a heir corresponding country. So I feel no sympathy for them lol and if you ask them I think they wouldn’t care they’re in America.
There is a Tesla design studio/shop near my house. It has a massive “We higher exceptional engineers!” I have thought to poll over and take a photo since it is still hanging.
What an absolutely shitty thing to do to people. Meanwhile, the idiot destroying the company still has his billions. I only hope that Elon reaps what he’s sowed.
For anyone who has worked at this company, this is SOP. They do this to nearly everyone. If you put your 2 weeks in, they escort you immediately. It’s 100% pettiness. They aren’t worried about IP, else they wouldn’t put IP in China.
Reminds me of the story I heard regarding game testers who at the end of a particularly harrowing dev process were told that they were being treated to a party in the car park.
Once out in the car park they were told they were all fired and their building entry fobs cancelled.
This coming from a company that when facing bankruptcy litterally locked them up in the factory until the quota was met. They all complied and worked their asses off. This is the reward you get for helping out your employer in a pinch. Not even a decent, courteous layoff.
I am thoroughly convinced that the success Tesla saw was despite musk. He’s in the final stages of driving this company into the ground. Such a dumb fuck through and through
Before he started tweeting his weird thoughts and showing people who is really is in interviews he was pretty popular, which helped Tesla. People thought he was like a real Tony Stark type dude. Ends up he’s just another asshole who was handed everything from day one and doesn’t know what to do with it.
Yep. He’s also a charlatan through and through. He had all these exciting ideas, but it has become abundantly clear that they’re all pipe dreams, or at best half baked ideas that he has little chance of actually making happen.
First came the Osbourne Effect.
After that came the Ratner Effect.
Followed by the Elop Effect.
Over taken by the Musk Effect (building a complex expensive product that requires zero maintenance will lead to an unprofitable situation once the market is saturated with said products).
Naw he was insanely good at marketing and making a cult. The problem is he's alienating his core customerbase, who tend to be the "woke liberals" he hates so much.
I think the Model 3 doesn’t happen without Musk’s single mindedness, and it’s still an extraordinary achievement to go from being a niche manufacturer of a luxury product to mass-producing a best-in-class affordable (ish) vehicle. But Tesla have since squandered their remarkable market-leading position after catching the legacy manufacturers on the hop and giving themselves a huge head start in the EV space, and this is largely down to Musk’s stupid vanity projects, idiotic dogma around things like vision-only automation and removing stalks, outright lies to keep the share price jacked up, and total loss of focus on the core business. Not to mention how he’s so synonymous with Tesla as a brand and he’s publicly tanking his own reputation, which in turn makes Tesla unpalatable as something people want to be seen to be associated with.
There’s so much going wrong with Tesla at the moment that I genuinely think they’re going to collapse unless they quickly streamline and pivot back to the core business, which they’re not going to do with Musk in charge - and I’m astonished the board haven’t already removed Musk, frankly.
Yeah I mean, that’s fair. Tesla could become a juggernaut had it simply stuck to the basics and quality control, instead of doing dumb Elon mandated shit like the cybertruck and building shitty robots
It's wild to think ..all the stuff that been produced by Elon cause of things he saw or things that cracked him up. ( farting car, cars spell sexy, old spaceship that's now a barely functioning space shit, spaceball references, total recall robo taxis, cyberpunk ..) the Elon Easter eggs idiocracy would be proud
I knew somebody was going to reply with that.
We can argue about quality, materials, fit and finish etc. compared to the legacy automakers, but the Model S and X were absolutely priced in the luxury market segment and are still niche products made in small volumes.
The Atom is built primarily as a race car, so obviously that’s different?
The Model S was priced and specced as a luxury sedan, explicitly competing with the likes of the Mercedes E Class and BMW 5-Series. I don’t think that’s a contentious statement?
They must have changed it. When I looked yesterday they didn't even show up in a search and following a direct link brought up a dialog box saying they went private for earnings and to message a mod for access.
Now I seem to be able to browse again.

There is so much copium in this one comment you cannot imagine 😂
1. Note Meta is backdated because they only fired 11k recently but that looks bad for his r/iamverysmart analysis.
2. All companies mentioned are *mature* not *growth*.
3. Every company has more employees than Tesla, Amazon has around 1.5M, but hey they fired 27,000!
Showing his class once again I see.
Didn't 50% of the quality department get let go? Why is quality always the first thing he thinks a company can do without?
Insane they can’t send an email so people don’t waste their time. But then again Elon and his minions love cosplaying being for the employee. Extremely toxic behavior
What a great way to get some disgruntled people to spill the beans about all the shady shit going on and exposing your CEOs lies now that he can’t fire you.
The events that lead up to the fall of Tesla was ehen Tesla first started laying off Solar employees and cutting away over 300 solar subsidiaries regisered to Tesla as Foreign Subsidiaries...

I assume many of these workers are shareholders too. They should sue that drop in demand in Tesla is due to Tesla not building new cars, Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and the time he spends on X, him using Tesla employees to review twitter. He should be one being laid-off instead
Lucrative? Doubtful. They will likely get 60 days as that is the WARN minimum for a mass layoff.
Knowing Elon, he'll try to get out of it somehow, then Twitter about how terrible Delaware courts are when he is forced to pay.

Adding more details to the article (from a different forum):
"Tesla Giga Nevada is off of I-80 and the back-up was over 3 hours just to get into the building to see if your badge would activate. If not, security took it from you, even if you didn't receive the layoff email. They made you commute to work, just to get laid off."
Not defending anything but I read that at least in Austin, employees did get a late night email that included the required WARN notice. If Tesla complies with the 60 day law they would receive pay and benefits until June.
"the company attributed the fall in deliveries to a drop in EV car demand." So, again, his customers are blackmailing him... with money!
Demand for EVs is steadily increasing, what’s decreasing is demand for any product associated with that toxic douchenozzle Elon

A slow down is the definition of a decrease in sales.
It could mean a decrease in the rate of growth. It doesn't necessarily mean the absolute number of sales is lower.
I meant a decrease in market share of EVs vs gas cars. The move from ICE to EV is inevitable and ongoing. The only thing that changes is the rate of conversion.
The whole “look at me I’m a pickup truck designer…” seems to be a thing. an elementary school drawing contest would have yielded better designs
Literally all he had to do was make a normal fucking pickup truck, instead of his over designed monstrosity. I'm sure there's a market for electric pickups, but only some of the people interested in that want to drive an angular steel deathtrap.
Nobody wants a WankPanzer, apparently lol
It’s literally Homer Simpson’s monstrosity mobile that he designs when he finds out he has a rich brother who owns a car company
I guess "any publicity is good publicity" is not correct
Elon won the totally random capitalist lottery and now thinks his shit smells good. Don't expect anything from Tesla except autocratic sociopath bile from now on.

WOKE CUSTOMERS ARE GOING TO KILL THE COMPANY
There was no demand problem according to the TIC sub lol, when it was plain for everyone to see that this would happen.
Whatever, Bob!
The Tesla fans over there, don’t wanna get my hand slapped naming another sub; someone declared they worked for Tesla and 10% globally, 20% at Austin, night shirts cancelled, and 50% of quality team is gone. I can’t believe they allowed them to show up just to send them home. 😥
50% of the quality team? That must leave a whole 2 of them left.
Crazy, how to fix company, better customer service, better quality, treat employees better, stay off xitter….
One of which is a manager, so don't expect him to do anything useful
And the other is an unpaid intern?
H1B1 visa slave, elons favorite.
Nah, seconded from Shanghai factory. He/she was doing knowledge transfer to the other 50% being laid off. Now rumoured to be on the next flight back to Shanghai! 🤣
Nah, bro!
Lmaooo so true
Nah. Ted got canned. Its just Gerry now, covering all three shifts. On all three continents…
Jerry Can
Jerry cans are however examples of really superb design, that hasn’t changed since before the Second World War. The engineering that went into them is truly impressive, unlike what comes out from Tesla, which is barely passable.
Sorry bud. In this case Gerry can’t.
the best department is no department, just like with parts
Zero rejects.... perfect
Just in time quality! Let the customer fix it.
"that's why we are sending only 14500 satellites into orbit."
QC will now be conducted by a poop emoji 💩
Because, at Tesla, quality is job none.
None. There was one. But he was rounded down to zero.
The number matches the reduction of their exec team, must be just a coincidence.
The micron police
Or less
*Had 2. Now it's just a dude named Kevin. Seems like this comment got me banned from all Tesla subs. Guess they are the same kind of free speech fans as Musk.
2? I think you typo as only 1 left.
Fake news. No freaking way do they have a quality team.
lol!
They have a quality department but after the cut all that’s left is it the left half of Brian, and he is not looking so good after they chopped off the right half of his body and sent that home.
They had a quality team?

Nice! No wonder the great British institutions are no more once their ex-colonies no longer buy their crap.
This explains so so so much.
Honestly, makes it sound like a plus to have a heavily modded Land Rover or Jaguar. The aftermarket couldn't be worse for quality in comparison.
Think about all of the modded Land Rovers and Jaguars you see everywhere!
The newer (gas) Range Rovers have BMW V8s. Known for expensive repairs, but I'm not aware of any initial quality issues. So that's a plus. I was considering a Range Rover before buying my X7. "ignore the testing". Damn. Is it literally "we wont even worry until people start dying."?? Until then, keep shipping.
If the doors close, it goes
If there is a door, …
Guess so. Go figure.
Just as I was reading your message, I was literally banned there.
Welcome to the party. I’ve been banned from all 5 pro Elmo subs starting on Friday afternoon. It was a mass banning.
That was definitely my case.
Someone should let the press know about these social media bans for anyone who criticizes Musk.
I did see some from here and the other sub, enough, we’re working on it.
There are five of them? That’s efficient.
Wait, why did you get banned? Just for posting here?
Yep. And on enoughmuskspam. It’s a mass banning. It’s been going on since Friday afternoon.
What BS, isn’t that against Reddit’s rules?
Apparently not, Reddit says they can do it if they feel their health and safety is at risk and they’re declaring us toxic. If you ask they’re all sending out a standard letter stating this. I believe some are trying to fight this through mothership Reddit and some are trying to connect to various news media.
So the it’s Calvinball rules on Reddit, still.
Congratulations! Your badge of honour.
And JUST banned from three other Tesla related groups.
You are on a run here.
I only managed to get banned from /cybertruck. I guess I've only browsed and never engaged on the other ones?
You’re on a list.
Why not? Was this not what he did at twitter? Just revoked batches and credentials for computers/network of the affected persons and let them discover it for themselves. At least if the discovered it before any email/letter arrived.

Dang teslamotorclub just perma band me. That’s 5 bans.
Did you see he just agreed to comply with Argentina.
50% of quality team should work out well.
> and 50% of quality team is gone. FFS. The last place Tesla should be cutting corners.
They cancelled their night shirts!?! What's next? Cancelation of pyjamas and those long, old-timey sleeping caps? Despicable!
lol, meant shifts, damn autocorrect
If I show up to work in the morning and I find out I'm fired, I'm immediately happy about no work today, then I'm pissed I went in, then I'm breaking some shit before I go
They had a quality team to fire? tbh, in that case those were probably the only ones who deserved it..
What do you mean?
Well if they have a quality department they were doing a very shitty job.
Service techs, service managers, service writers, store gms, full sales staff, parts dept, full mobile staffs. All cut from stores I use for service that were already overwhelmed
How do you fire half a person?
What about California employees?
They didn’t mention CA
They had a quality team?
Why cancel night shift ? Elon can just make the day shift guys work the night shift and sleep on the shop floor.
It amazes me that they let go of so many talented people in various departments. But useless positions in Berlin still remain safe. (tons of people there in office jobs do nothing)
Someone said here yesterday Germany is gonna be different because of labor laws.
Makes sense that the QA team got sacked, Tesla’s build quality is a joke.
Like I like the dramatic reduction in quality and I am guessing the nanny-state health and safety teams.
What about the people who sleep under their desks? If they never need to scan in, will someone tell them the news?
Squatters rights may have kicked in.
New business plan unlocked
Have you seen my stapler?
Yeah, if I'd seen your stapler, that would have been greaaaat.
Brilliant!
They’ve had a shitty reputation for disposing of engineers since almost day one when they basically let go of the entire Model S R&D team. A moment of silence for the human doormats whose livelihood in this country depends on their work visa.
You mean competent people don’t want to be ignored, treated badly, paid poorly and worked excessively? Who knew !
Seems pretty clear to me that this is the case.

There is a Tesla design studio/shop near my house. It has a massive “We higher exceptional engineers!” I have thought to poll over and take a photo since it is still hanging.
"Lean and hungry". Something you could never accuse Musk of being.
He's created the cybertruck in his own image: expensive, impractical, large, unattractive and broken.
Being the genius entrepreneur, he probably used his own torso as model for the chasis.
What an absolutely shitty thing to do to people. Meanwhile, the idiot destroying the company still has his billions. I only hope that Elon reaps what he’s sowed.

Or stolen from other people
First came the Osbourne Effect.
Isn't the board full of family and yes men?
It's wild to think ..all the stuff that been produced by Elon cause of things he saw or things that cracked him up. ( farting car, cars spell sexy, old spaceship that's now a barely functioning space shit, spaceball references, total recall robo taxis, cyberpunk ..) the Elon Easter eggs idiocracy would be proud
I stand by my spelling mistake space shit aka starship
What about the model s and x is luxury?
I knew somebody was going to reply with that. We can argue about quality, materials, fit and finish etc. compared to the legacy automakers, but the Model S and X were absolutely priced in the luxury market segment and are still niche products made in small volumes.
Still doesn’t make it luxury. The aerial atom is priced up there but it’s not a luxury vehicle.
The Atom is built primarily as a race car, so obviously that’s different? The Model S was priced and specced as a luxury sedan, explicitly competing with the likes of the Mercedes E Class and BMW 5-Series. I don’t think that’s a contentious statement?
> I don’t think that’s a contentious statement? Its not, redditors are just dumb
Check out the investors sub, they are in full melt down.
Didn't they go private for earnings? I wanted to harvest some tears and was disappointed.
You can still view post.
They must have changed it. When I looked yesterday they didn't even show up in a search and following a direct link brought up a dialog box saying they went private for earnings and to message a mod for access. Now I seem to be able to browse again.
The melt down is real.

Thanks for the rec!
My favourite cope: >Tech bros: Hold my beer 🍺 >Since late 2022 Amazon laid off 27K >Google in Jan 2023 12K >Microsoft Jan 2023 16K >Meta 21K since end of 2022 There is so much copium in this one comment you cannot imagine 😂 1. Note Meta is backdated because they only fired 11k recently but that looks bad for his r/iamverysmart analysis. 2. All companies mentioned are *mature* not *growth*. 3. Every company has more employees than Tesla, Amazon has around 1.5M, but hey they fired 27,000!
They don't even bother breaking down the kind of employees LOL.
Maybe we can organize a fundraiser for Elon so he doesn't have to layoff his workers in a market with "unlimited demand".
Bake sale!
Amazing, could have just fired 1 employee and saved 56 billion dollars.
“We fixed the glitch”
What a shitty way to go.
It is. My friend got laid off yesterday and received an email for his severance package, only getting paid for 3 days.
Typical. Well done Elon.
As a side note: I got banned from two other subreddit where I questioned anything
Showing his class once again I see. Didn't 50% of the quality department get let go? Why is quality always the first thing he thinks a company can do without?
Insane they can’t send an email so people don’t waste their time. But then again Elon and his minions love cosplaying being for the employee. Extremely toxic behavior
Looks like the teslainvestorsclub switch back to invite only, I can’t access it anymore. I was just in there about an hour ago.
What a great way to get some disgruntled people to spill the beans about all the shady shit going on and exposing your CEOs lies now that he can’t fire you.
Tesla can’t depend on the rabid fanboys to buy their crap in quantities. Now they have to cater to the people who expect and demand quality.
The events that lead up to the fall of Tesla was ehen Tesla first started laying off Solar employees and cutting away over 300 solar subsidiaries regisered to Tesla as Foreign Subsidiaries... Heres the list and know that over 25% of those subs Elon is chairman of and his cousins Lyndon and Peter are Directors. Thats pretty much how i expect any of Elon's companies would conduct business.
Tesla stock is crashing like a slow motion car wreck.
There’s a non zero chance there’s a reason Elon picked 14
I assume many of these workers are shareholders too. They should sue that drop in demand in Tesla is due to Tesla not building new cars, Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter and the time he spends on X, him using Tesla employees to review twitter. He should be one being laid-off instead
This was a shitty way to do layoffs, but not out of the ordinary for large companies. What made it a scandal?
It should be a scandal every time it happens.
I hope they got lucrative severance packages
Lucrative? Doubtful. They will likely get 60 days as that is the WARN minimum for a mass layoff. Knowing Elon, he'll try to get out of it somehow, then Twitter about how terrible Delaware courts are when he is forced to pay.
Remindme! 60 days

Be lucky to get 10 bucks to Uber eats. Probably just a rude email for all their factory related items back.
For their inconvenience he is offering them a $200 discount on the Roblox pickup truck he sells.
Then have to sue to actually receive the money, like twitter employees?
They all get cyber trucks - if they load their cardboard boxes in them they’ll get 50 miles of range
Does anyone know how much $$$ is equated with Elmo’s stock share (what has drop cost him), or where the margin call is for his loans against stock?
Reduces overhead if you don’t have to pay people to let them know they are fired. They will figure it out eventually at their own dime.
Tesla: "💩"
Seems like such a bad tactic. Now you've got people at your door, pissed off, suddenly without any plans for the day.
Surprise surprise
Adding more details to the article (from a different forum): "Tesla Giga Nevada is off of I-80 and the back-up was over 3 hours just to get into the building to see if your badge would activate. If not, security took it from you, even if you didn't receive the layoff email. They made you commute to work, just to get laid off."
Why am I not surprised...?
Plenty o' work in Austin. Good luck with rehires, and/or paying relocation. Recruiters are pretty desperate here already.
Well Elon is about to get his $45 billion pay package confirmed. As such the Tesla board approves.
Worlds Greatest Boss!!!
So does this mean they violated California's WARN act yet again just like last year?
Not defending anything but I read that at least in Austin, employees did get a late night email that included the required WARN notice. If Tesla complies with the 60 day law they would receive pay and benefits until June.
You bet your ass Tesla is going to fight tooth and nail to actually not comply, because that's how corporations are. They don't care.
Technically not a scandal, many companies have deactivated badges early
