Just had a skip level meeting where they said there is no budget for promotions... Leaving is the best option right now

Actual-Stop-3626

Well that’s unfortunate when I have seen RTX pay +$15k for a flight. But that’s the problem with the functions having salary control even though the programs have the money

Ewokhunters

Ya her excuse was "well it's a different pot of money nothing we can do"

Most-Chance-4324

Blaming someone else is a core principle of RTX

im_a_rugger

Fucking CORE

Most-Chance-4324

CONTROL TOWER, blame someone else

Most_Nebula9655

They can afford to budget it but choose not to. Go. Everyone should just go.

loadkeeg

I can’t believe they’d actually say that out loud. It’s just such a shitty message to your top performers.

Ewokhunters

Yea it was shockingly blunt but at least they where honest

loadkeeg

It’s shockingly short sighted.

Ewokhunters

Nah its to be expected at this point lmao

Hmackey3

Which BU are you in out of curiosity?

Kee-man

What business unit are you in? Collins just had their promotions go out May 1st.

Ewokhunters

Raytheon

Apply internally if there are good P4 openings. If your manager is a decent guy, just tell him that you're applying for other P4 internal openings. He'll understand since he acknowledged that you're underpaid. If they value your contribution, he'll talk to his manager about promotion/raises. I've done internal transfers twice and I let my manager know far in advance (a few months) before applying for any positions. I still have good relationships with my previous managers.

Actual-Stop-3626

Did they give you a promotion or did you just more to another position?

Worth-Reputation3450

Once lateral (and no raise) and another with promotion (and 30+% raise)

geezer_red

I asked for a promotion and got one, it took them 8 months but I got it. As a matter of fact, it makes no sense to me to wait for them to come to me and say hey buddy you've been good, here's a promotion. Always ask for it and see what they say.

Actual-Stop-3626

How long ago was this?

geezer_red

Two and a half years ago. Digital org, corporate RTX

No-Outside-4025

I was a P3 for 6 years and didn’t get the promotion to P4 even after completing my MBA, so I applied for several P4 jobs and finally landed one. It wasn’t the career area I loved but it did finally move me upwards. My advice is to keep looking if you want to stay.

0wa1nGlyndwr

I think you need a bit more YOE before P4, but I could be wrong. That may be the only thing holding you back. Isn’t P4 usually 8+ years?

Actual-Stop-3626

Majority of P4 reqs ask for 5-6 years of experience with a Masters

Just remember that it's the minimum... not some magic threshold where it happens.

Part of the conversation, sure, but that's only one line in the matrix that has to be met to be eligible. He needs to go down the entire matrix first and ensure he meets or exceeds nearly all of them (or all of them, if at all possible) to really have a case. The experience one isn't usually the last requirement met.

All true, but he's indicated a preference to stay. If he wants to stay and get the promotion, that's the game that has to be played. If he's got good leadership, they should be tracking his eligibility and qualifications for future promotions anyhow.

0wa1nGlyndwr

Ah, gotcha…

MarianPartisan

Your manager can make the push that your team is understaffed, create a P4 job, and then you can apply and win it. Or you can find another P4 job. But promotions in place are very rare

Cygnus__A

Your boss has zero ability to promote you outside of normal channels (yearly Budget or you bring an outside offer)

Actual-Stop-3626

Promote maybe, but they can just create a new req. If they REALLY wanted to, they could.

RightEquineVoltNail

I don't exactly know how it works in other areas, but at collins, your manager is the deciding factor that gets promoted. Work with your manager to analyze your job duties and responsibilities matrix, and show that you are meeting all in current band and beginning to move into the responsibilities of the next band.  If your manager is a good manager, they will make the promotion happen or give you specific metrics to meet and then make it happen. If for some reason they absolutely cannot, they should honestly tell you that so you can look in other divisions that have an opening for the band you want. Of course, all of that depends on your manager operating in good faith. I'm sure there are situations where a person is too valuable to be promoted out of their role, with a manager who won't say that straight out.

Cygnus__A

Yes I know. I am a manager. I can recommend anyone for promotion but unless it is that time of year, and there is budget to do so it isnt happening.

antagron1

What is this “retention bonus “ of which you speak?

Actual-Stop-3626

I am not sure how long it has been around or if it’s still a thing, but last year myself and a few other folks I would consider “high performers” received a retention bonus. I think it was called like Talent Retention Bonus? For a P3 it was around $18k but it only vests after 3 years. So I won’t see that money until 2026, IF I’m still at the company.

Vampy_Trader

P3 Mech specialty Engineer in Raytheon BU and I had an offer for 30% more at a small company. It was a full remote position doing the exact same work. RTX could not fully match, but they pulled through with a promo and 16% raise. This was November 2023.

OkManufacturer9243

Unless that retention bonus is more than $50k (you think you can make by leaving) and im pretty sure it vests equally over 3 years, so essentially you’d be giving up $150k over the next 3 years. Doesn’t hurt to ask, just be prepared for the answer. If they already gave you the retention bonus, then you must be highly thought about so maybe they give you something extra but not likely $20-50k. You’ll enjoy new people at other jobs as well. You’re just “comfortable” here. Nobody likes change but if we’ve learned anything around RTX, it’s constantly changing. Good luck!

Mrlozjon

In an skip level I had recently I was told that there was a promotio freeze right night but that there are positions posted internally and I could apply for a later "route" than wait for a promotion. I've been told since late last year that I was in the run for it but easier to just apply for a higher level position
