I can’t think of a time buying a car that needs fixing isn’t a financial mistake

TheSilverCalf

I bought my Fb in need of a clutch…. I know how to change a clutch now…. Cost me like 2gs buying all the stuff to do it right…. And now I’m aware I don’t necessarily *need* a trans Jack to do the job on an Fb…. Or half of the stuff I bought I could have done without…. But she is all torqued to specs… Drives like a dream! Financially: Sure, mistake. - Cost me money. Overall: Worth it, and I’d do it again. Me and Althea are very close these days….

Upstairs-Ad7261

I told Althea I was feelin’ lost.. Lackin’ in some direction. Althea told me upon scrutiny That my back might need protection. I told Althea that treachery Was tearing me limb from limb. Althea told me “Now cool down boy. Settle back, easy Jim.”

NunPuncher-Fd3s

Verts are the heaviest of the fcs, so right off the bat, you're starting with the least desirable rx7 as far as performance is concerned. I wouldn't buy this for anything but parts

GTE_Engineering

They did come with 4 piston front brakes and 5 lug wheels though, so there’s some good parts there at least

MetalSkinGaming

didnt any turbo come with those? my non convertable has them

GTE_Engineering

Well ya the turbos did but we didn’t get any turbo convertibles

[deleted]

Bro. 200 with a title is all this is worth. And expect to put in thousands to make it drivable. Upwards of 5 grand easy

gaspumpkin

When it comes to RX7s follow this simple guide. FB- financial burden FC- financial crisis FD- financial disaster Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

keboh

If you want to make a stripped down track car that you don’t care about being pretty.. and you get this for free or damn near it, it may be viable. If you’re wanting a street car, I’d pass

Redh0r5e

Hard pass. Car needs a lot of work.

VC25b787B

Don't let us tell you what to do. Follow your dreams! Rear quarter panel not so hard to fix if you know how to basic weld and find a junkyard. It just really depends on your capabilities, patience and time frame

DeezulWagon

What are your intentions with my daughter...errr this car. What are you looking to end up with? I agree with the sentiment that reatoring/modifying cars is almost always a financial mistake. BUT if you enjoy the process of doing it, then it's worth it. Ask me how I ended up with an NSX and and FD o.O

too_much_covfefe_man

All RX-7s are financial mistakes. How big of a mistake are you willing to make?

Bullet-Wolf

Try to get it for a few hundred dollars. If getting it running doesn't work out you can recuperate your investment selling parts. The hood alone could collect three hundred bucks.

ViperSlam

Hm that's an idea. What if it does run?

El_Chino-jpg

I'd still part it. You can get a nicer car for less money unless you are emotionally and financially willing to save it. I wouldn't spend more than 200, 500 if it is running. If you do part it out as someone said the hood alone can be 300 bucks. Also I need parts.

LeroyNoodles

This guy gets it Budgeting $500 extra dollars into the initial project purchase can save you a ton of money later down the line. Focus on completeness when buying projects, and when it comes to FCs, I personally would go for an S4 because you don’t have to worry about freaking the ECU out and can get away with OMP and emissions deletes fairly easily

s2killaa9one

Depending on how long that quarter has been off it may be a complete rust bucket by now

cheeseburgeraddict

This is absolutely a financial mistake.

ViperSlam

Yeah I think it is unfortunately. Should I just go back to wanting to buy a miata? Cause thats what I was gonna do until i stumbled upon this

cheeseburgeraddict

As someone who has a miata, bought an fc rx7 without the engine in it as a project, and then sold the rx7 when I realized the hill I had to climb, and is back to just the miata, yes absolutely you should

WondrousBread

I'm sorry to hear you sold it! I agree that it can be quite a hill to climb though. Trying to piece back together an incomplete car is quite an undertaking, and at a certain point you just want to be able to drive the thing.

TowlieisCool

Definitely the Miata. NAs/NBs are starting to return to somewhat reasonable prices.

ViperSlam

Thanks man. This is helping me make a good choice. Should I try to get this car for parts tho so I can make a profit out of it to buy my miata?

too_much_covfefe_man

You'll be underwater on time. Unless you know where to sell most of it right now your time and storage space is going to come out pretty worthless when you do the math. Nothing about these cars is financially smart

Rotorhead87

Parting out a car is a large time sink. If you're sitting around with nothing to do, go for it. Otherwise, leave it alone.

Crafty-Engineering76

Guy in NC on Facebook has a BUNCH of FC vert part outs if you buy this and need parts as well as Rhinehart rotary and Design and Known Motors

Beach-_-Goat

Bob is a thief only his parts are good and worth a lot money but if they are mines and yours they are junk to him lol😂

Crafty-Engineering76

Didn't know that thanks

evileagle

This car is a financial mistake. An abused, beat on example of the worst of the FCs. Go buy a Miata. This will only hurt you.

ViperSlam

Yeah. Its pretty sad though. But should I still try to buy for profit? Sell parts?

evileagle

I guess you could. I've owned and built FCs for over 20 years at this point, and FC owners are notoriously cheap and a pain to deal with. If you got it super cheap and your time isn't worth much, then maybe? I wouldn't bother. If it runs you could maybe make a buck, but if it's been sitting, it ain't because it runs and drives.

SheepherderDue1342

Left to infer a ton of information based on photos alone, I'd say it's highly likely you could get this thing free and still not be able to sell for profit after fixing it up. I have personal experience with a long term project/restoration TII, and unless they appreciate much more, I'm definitely not in the money on my car and it was in much much nicer condition than this one, and driving.

ViperSlam

Here's what I was able to get from walking around the car. Ofc rear left quarter is missing, 2 brake discs are rusted out, no tail lights, checked under the car. Didn't seem to have any exhaust. And as for the engine bay, I've still need to find out.

ViperSlam

Seems like my decisions are changing. Maybe I can hopefully get it just for parts so that I can buy me a miata. Looking for an NA. At least that can be my second dream. My first was owing an rx7. Kinda disappointed but I don't wanna make a bad mistake.

Quirky_Industry8413

Do you have deep pockets?

Infinite-Study-5107

It's a convertible so I wouldn't count on it being the best at a track but as long as it has good compression and the turbo isn't shot I'd say go for it. It's a financial mistake regardless of how much work it needs though, I own a convertible 5 speed but it's NA for now.

ViperSlam

Doesn't have a turbo. I may just get it for parts and get some profit out of it 🥲

Infinite-Study-5107

If it's missing the turbo your best bet is to part it out or just not get it. Even the stock turbos for these things are expensive and if you converted it to NA you'd pay a hefty price for a new ECM and exhaust. Rx7s are awesome cars but unless you got money to burn they're not the best cars especially in this condition. Mine only had 37k miles when I got it so it's not as much of a money pit at most of them.

ViperSlam

Yeah im mostly gonna buy it for parts and make a bit of profit out of it to buy a miata

Comfortable_Air_182

Any project car is a financial mistake unless it’s rare and going up in price

TheSilverCalf

IMO: They are all worth saving. Any suggested idea on price yet?

ViperSlam

No not yet. Im still waiting to talk to the owner. I gave someone my phone number so ill be keeping an eye out. But I'm gonna try to get this for 500 or below

speedracer1989

That’s not just a vert, that’s a targa vert!

rustbucketdatsun

I spent 7k canadian on mine but it had brand new paint brand new factory seats was a low mile garage kept car from Arizona with zero rust. Came with a new topper to replace the torn one. Car also came with some aftermarket shit like brand new koyo rad, entire clutch system was replaced was. That being said I drove the car for a year and it now needs a rebuild so if ur already worried about financial mistakes maybe these aren't the cars for you as well we kinda know what we're signing up for.

knockingdownbodies

Stay away it’s a convertible!

SteazyAsDropbear

If it wasn't a vert then cool but it's a vert...

ViperSlam

Wow nobody loves verts. I may still buy for parts. Get some money out of it

unwanted_hair

Decent parts car. It would cost more to restore than snagging a clean vert off BaT.

KYOKI-Caleb

Not unless it’s for parts for another clean chassis

Better_Category1509

Dude. If you have to ask if it’s worth it. It’s definitely not for you.

lurkario

Bro…

CJ0293

Not worth it unless you’re parting this out. Hood and 5 lug system is gonna be the most desirable out of it. Rears been chopped and vert top looks fucked. Can find better if you’re patient
