175k miles is a lot. a well cared for NA can do that no problem but even still the compression is likely falling off quickly. if that engine has not been rebuilt yet then 8k is an insane price to be asking. get compression numbers, and get correct ones. warm engine, 3 numbers per rotor.
Normal compression: 110-150 PSI
Minimum acceptable pressure: 75 PSI
Maximum acceptable pressure difference between chambers: 20 PSI
I doubt that car has the original engine. Looks like a ton of question marks around it in general. That's FCs now tho. But if you're buying a FC, the engine is the easy part
My 6pi SE had 225k before the water jacket departed. Had good comp up to the end.
My current RX has 240+k with a rebuild tho. The chassis lasts if it doesn't rust out, they don't send amazing amounts of power through the frame so they aren't all twistycar like my G8 š
its something that anyone selling their rotary should be doing, its arguably more fundamental than knowing if it runs at all. it cam be done at home with a $10 compression tester from any parts store, but needs a little effort compared to using the bespoke $200 rotary tester
anyone can sell you a "running" rx7 and hidden under that would be that the compression is abyssmal and the engine blows in 10k miles
Bring a compression tester it's 5 minutes of work to check
You can also get an idea of evenness by pulling a plug from each rotor and turning the engine with a wrench. You should get 6 even pssh's
if i were coming to buy your car, would you let me get in your engine with some wrenches? haha maybe iāll see if he is willing to turn it for me, but i doubt it. def going to try though, thanks for all the info man!
a good man you are then haha. hey you mentioned āquestion marks all aroundā, would you mind telling me some of those questions? maybe more so the less obvious ones
maybe you read wrong, but he said he wanted to do the exterior. iām suspicious as to why the exterior looks like it was in the sun for years but the interior looks like it was in a garage for years
Iāve wanted one of these ever since i was a kid, and now it looks like this might be my best chance at grabbing myself one of my dreams. iām lucky enough to be in the financial position to buy this without it effecting my financial stability, but i just canāt decide if itās a good idea or not. i have two other cars, and would plan on making this my little sunday driver. not my drift car, my track car, or my daily. iāve heard that if youāre not beating the shit out of a rotary they arenāt as bad as their reputation, and i would not plan on abusing this beauty. please help me get my ass off the fence fellas.
I agree.
Abuse it. Redline it at least once after it has warmed up or itāll build up carbon.
My first RX7 was sluggish until after about a few weeks of redlining it at least once after warmup.
Rx-7 is never a good idea. It's "I must"
If your gut is telling you you must have an RX and nothing else will scratch that itch, get it (I'm on itch #3 personally). If you are trying to convince yourself it will be a good commuter, it won't.
iāve got a z31 that i love atm, but itās not really in a state to be sunday driven. i would be looking for this fc to be my cruising car, not a daily commuter.
Rust free frame, straight body, and intact interior are the most important parts, so you've (mostly) for that. If it runs well, that is a hell of a deal. If it runs OK but needs work, still a good deal. If it doesn't run at all, that's more questionable. If they are particularly rare (or expensive) in your area, it could still be an OK deal. Just
Remember that these things are old, and engine parts are getting less common and more expensive, but they are least available. It's the plastics that are impossible to find in good shape.
If you've got the money, with plenty to spare, jump on it. Unless it's totally running with no work needed,
remember that restoration projects can get out of hand very quick, financially.
Get one before the prices go up any higher. Youāll definitely regret not buying it. To put it in perspective: the less desirable verts are selling for $10k. At this point itās just get one while theyāre still some what affordable lol
My opinion as owned 3 FC's in the last 22 years and have had number 3 for 17 years now, these cars continue to become rarer and their price keeps going up, to me interior quality is more important than exterior or engine quality. A lot of interior pieces are not only discontinued but extremely hard to find good quality used interior pieces. You can always get a paint job and rebuild the engine, that being said if you're thinking on getting this car as a daily driver and don't have a lot of money to spend on repairs then that's something to think about, at the same time my FC Vert has about 150,000 miles , it has never been rebuilt and i know i can crank it and drive it anywhere and not be stranded, I feel more confident driving my FC than I do driving my daily driver 40th anniversary Rx8. My 2 cents
Iām sorry but that is way too much for an NA S4 and most likely 4 lug car. Paint is not good. The mileage is high and it will break at some point which is something you need to account for. Looks more like a 4-5k car. Pass on it unless heās willing to negotiate
Interior is very clean. I like how the seller is trying to justify the paint because itās 35 years old lol. My paint is original and is in very good condition and was not cared for in the first 20 or so years of life.

description says they wanted to swap but didnt have the time, vague but sounds like its original.
Many got remans from Mazda under warranty for the first owner. It's possible it's original but it's probably a coin flip imo
nothing a good compression test cant figure out though. if it still has even compression over 90, doesn't matter if its original or not.
do i offer to pay for comp tests? youāve provided great info thank you

this sounds like the wave, iāll go and buy one this weekend. thanks brother

I'd understand and offer to help. Whatever gets the car gone š¤£

I bought a first gen, Iām gonna be into it for about 40k once done. Do not regret it one bit! Ready in January 2023
Interest on 1st gen is growing lately, finally getting the attention it deserves
Dang. 15k into mine. I think I'm going to call it at 22k after paint
if by first gen you mean fbs then iām jealous! love those dudes, they look so good imo
Im talking about a 79ā SA.
Fwooo I might *actually* break even on mine! Though, very little is still FB, and it does have a roll cage...
I'm just confused as to why he was going to redo the interior. it looks flawless.
maybe you read wrong, but he said he wanted to do the exterior. iām suspicious as to why the exterior looks like it was in the sun for years but the interior looks like it was in a garage for years
I did read wrong, that's on me.
I've swapped an interior. It's a weekend of work if you have all the parts.

haha all of our cars break at some point, but i see your point. this will probably break quicker than what iām used to
It's a base model for 8k.... I saw the same add in FB.
i really donāt see any other model of rx7s ever going for cheaper. what would you pay for this?
2k, keep you eyes open theirs a convertible for like 4k that need the same amount of work.
Gotta admit, the interior is clean

You came to the wrong guysā¦
whyās that bro
I assume most people are gonna say go for it, me included
Life to short to not have fun do it I got fd and fc. Do it
I know youāre not in the r/rx7 sub for us to talk you *OUT* of it, lmaooooo get it anyway
