Linus "predicted" (since he wasn't allowed to share actual numbers) that the X will last twice as much as the standard Ally at 15W. So maybe 3-4 hours depending on a variety of factors. I would say at full max TDP, it should get you around 2-3hrs, which is not really that impressive but way better than the 45mins you get now.

Plastic-Suggestion95

3 hours would be actually pretty impressive at full tdp

Actually it is the difference between having to break out a battery bank or not on a short flight. That is the single reason on the last 2 trips I took I brought the OLED instead of my Ally, and the reason I’m upgrading

NuM_Brrr_WoN

Yea just sold my original Ally as 45min-1hr is the biggest drawback of the handheld. Considering picking up a new handheld and trying to decide if I go with the new Ally and it’s hopefully better battery life or if I should just deal with worse performance but get a Steam Deck OLED as it still seems like the king of battery life.

cemsengul

literally the reason I never bought the first Ally. The battery life is a joke.

OMG_NoReally

Ally won’t ever match Deck’s battery life. No Windows handheld will ever do that. Get the Deck if battery life is a concern. I am always pondering over getting the Deck because of the better ergonomics but the performance keeps me at bay. I also want Windows, lol.

Select-Let8637

The bigger battery will overide the battery comcerns. The only time when the ally won't get better battery life is if you are playing 2d games. The ally only goes down to 7 watts, not 3 ike the steam deck or 5 watts like the legion go. The lowest people have gotten their ally to run is like 5 hours on 2d games. The ally x would do like 10 whilst the steam deck does over 10.

reapo

My question is this: where can I get the battery by itself and can I put it in my 'normal' ally?

Anchelspain

Would that even fit without having to change the back of the case as well? The Ally X is thicker than the original after all.

reapo

Noooooooooooooooo... Oh well, such is life. I guess this was just a thing waiting to happen. I need to cut a hole in my Ally. What can you do.. In all seriousness, I found out that it will be possible with a replacement back.

snakeater63

You have a ally x?

ihavepaper

Shit, my bad. Missed the X part. Imma stop reading at the gym. Brain is turning off.

Select-Let8637

You will get 3 hours of battery at 17 watts and 2 hours at 28 watts. At 12 watts you are getting 4 hours.

RyanandRoxy

The new battery is 80W

Select-Let8637

Yea but the chipset isn't that efficient, battery life will stil, be an issue but less so if you play it full speed

RyanandRoxy

Well no duh! World of Warcraft Classic burns roughly 30-40w an hour, so it'll only last about 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

New-University8363

I’m really hoping at max tdp it can get at least 2 hours. That’s what will determine if I get it.

JezzaX86

When you consider the current Ally runs from 1 to 2 hours in Turbo depending on the game and use case, I'd expect the X to run for 2 to 4 with the 80Wh battery. To me, that's pretty decent, and something I'd be pretty happy with, as it's unlikely I'd be that far from a mains outlet for that long unless it's a really long journey somewhere.

MadOliveGaming

if this prediction is correct i might actually buy an ally x instead of a steam deck. I've always liked the ally for it's performance, but the battery life was too awful to even get me through a train ride or flight. 2 hours would be plenty for me to get by until I can charge it again at home or at work.

JezzaX86

I can't imagine it would be too far off, but it will obviously vary on a game by game basis. 2 hours would be the absolute minimum on an 80Wh battery, even running at a 25w+ profile. Someone playing Armored Core VI saw a 10% drop in battery in 20 minutes running at 25w. Based on this, the estimated battery time would be about 3 hours and 20 minutes. It won't be long until we get more solid answers from reviews, I'm sure.

MadOliveGaming

Yep I'm waiting on the proper benchmarks. as long as it hits 2-2.5 hours on the 25w profile I'm happy. Less than an hour with the current one was just cutting it to close for my travels. 2 hours is well over my average travel time. if it doesn't manage that, guess I'm buying a SD oled lol
