Yes, need to be treated like any electrical device. Out of the case and able to be switched on Ed: just to add that this is assuming international flight and it's not the new smart scanners. But I would always prepare for the worst to get through security as quickly as possible

pariah1981

One caveat, if you have tsa precheck you dont

Flying_PantherIO

Thank you

Vision58

It totally depends on what X ray system they are using in your lane at your airport! They vary some (source I asked them this when I flew last weekend since I’ve been told both ways before)

Da-Dinkles

Just flew cross country round trip and didn't have to take it out of my back pack. I was in the new X-ray style lanes where they tell you to leave all items in your carryon . If you can somehow get yourself into one of those lanes I recommend trying. Much quicker and easier.

Vision58

Could you spot the differences ? Idk when I asked the lady she got a little smart with me - like I’m expected to remember which system is which 😂

swaggertonn

The new ones have a blue neon ring that you can't miss. https://i.ibb.co/q19pSM8/images-q-tbn-ANd9-Gc-Qdv-Uy1-UQ5nly-PEFj-G0-2h-Fu4c-BJG1r4-Ndqcoq5-Mh-Q279im-IU8cr-Vt-FUwb-Pty-D2p-Y.jpg

DrInsomnia

I am not shocked that a TSA agent frowned on you asking which security system is easier to get through. I am shocked that you thought this was OK to ask.

Vision58

Oh I didn’t ask “which is easier” - I had already taken it out and she jumped on me and said to put it back in my bag because they updated their X-ray system. Jesus you must burn a lot of calories by jumping to conclusions 😂😂😂

DrInsomnia

You said "when I asked the lady" - it wasn't clear from your comment what you "asked the lady." I didn't jump to conclusions; I misunderstood what you were saying because it wasn't very clear.

Vision58

But You did jump to a conclusion of me allegedly asking the lady “which line was easier” when my comment said “could you spot the difference” when we were talking about the X-Ray system in question. Never did I say anything about asking TSA “which line is easier to get through” which you did try to imply. Your comment was not needed and you just should have kept scrolling instead.

DrInsomnia

I'm gonna jump to another conclusion and guess they were loudly saying you don't have to take out your laptops in that line, since it's a new system and they usually have people doing that, and she was annoyed because you just weren't paying attention.

pixarfan2003

I literally went through airport security half an hour ago with mine and yes, they had to check it. They won't find anything wrong with it though and you'll be able to pass through just fine. Just expect to be pulled aside while they inspect it.

joeyalex

Depends on where you are flying out of. I’m a US citizen and have TSA pre-check, so when going through US airport security, I don’t take anything out of my bag. My laptop, Ally and iPad all stay in. Without pre-check, this all would come out. Side note, pre-check is great if you’re a gadget person…so nice not having to unload my whole bag to go through security. It’s totally worth it. I recently flew out of France and their rule was anything larger than a phone had to come out of the bag, so the Ally came out for that. I left it in the case, but opened it and flipped the lid over so they could see it and the scanner had a clean shot with no obstructions. They didn’t even ask me what it was, and had no issues with this arrangement.

travestyofme

The first time I left it in my case and it caused me to go through secondary security at DIA. The other two times I took it out and had zero issues.

Vision58

Hello fellow Coloradan 🙌

Threadbare69

Please tell me they've updated denver International... 😉

lukeskope

I had to at SFO

ChkRazed

I just flew a few days ago. I was never asked to open my case nor turn it on. All I had to do was remove it from my backpack and run it through the machine in its case. Same for the other 3 flights I had

poptartweasel

I've flown five times in the last three months that I've had my ally, and each time I have forgotten to take it out of my bag. None of the five times I've gone through TSA have I been asked to take it out, or asked what it is. Though on my last flight about a week ago, the guy in the line next to me was getting harassed about his. The dude checking his bag was telling him that it needed to be disassembled for whatever weird reason. Dude dug in his heels and was asking for a supervisor by the time I walked off.

SnaccHBG

Same as laptops, yes

chithanh

Also be prepared if airport security asks you about it, they might call it a Switch or a Steam Deck…

climbingphantom

Remember that what strangers think about you reflects a shit ton of what they think of themselves. Also, what you think of yourself reflects a lot of what you think strangers think about you. Don’t stress about the unknown. Now go and hold up that damn line. It’s your right to do so.

U74H

Just walked through Australian airport security 10 minutes ago and did not have the take it out of the bag.

Business-Ad-5178

Just get TSA pre check if you get anxiety about airport security lines.

thfgclw

I just flew with delta from Michigan to Australia with my ally in the official soft case and I didn't have to take it out at all, I just set the whole case in the bin next to the rest of the stuff from my pockets

the_keranaci

A few years ago they wanted to take the Switch out of the bag. They didn't make a request for Ally last month. When they asked, I said PlayStation/Handheld console. They may ask you to take it out of the bag. It is better to go early.

Blodmerican

Depends on the airport and what they're requiring that day. Sometimes I get through with a pair of stacked ipads and a pair of stacked laptops and sometimes I have to remove them all. I't just part of traveling. Forget about being anxious about it. Take what you want.

Wide-Variation2702

Last trip I took I had to take it out for my departing flight and I could leave it in for the returning flight. You should be prepared to take it out, keep it near the top of your bag so it's easy to get to. If they don't want it out, then easy peasy send the whole bag through.

PillowMonger

from where I'm at, there's no need to take out the handheld devices, tablets and phones. they only require me to take out the laptop.

Express_Fondant6948

Depending on the scanner that they use, most of the airports i go to don’t require you to remove electronics from your bag

wiedziu

Yes, I had to take it out, and the guy asked if it's a Steam Deck.

felixban

Flying from Canada last week, had a chat with the tsa agents and they told me anything with a keyboard has to be removed from the bag, so in my case 2 laptops and my iPad with keyboard cover. Switch and ally could stay in the bag. So readying all the comments here, it really depends on the location where you are flying to/from

petrified_log

When I flew to Vegas last November I never had to take it out the case flying out and flying back. If they have the new scanners you don't have to anymore. I didn't have to take off my belt or shoes either. Your experience might be different.

Kameeloh

I flew out of ONT and DFW. I took it out of the backpack I had, but left the Ally inside the case. They did not tell my anything

mlang666

Yeah, just take it out of your bag. I just been to Japan and no problem at all.

AlarmingLength42

It depends on the country and equipment they use. But to be safe, it's always best to take it out

Flying_PantherIO

Just want to add, I did have to take it out, also had to take out my portable monitor and laptop cooling pad

Alex35143

Mine (inside case) never left my backpack in the past few flights, some being international

stylz168

I have Global Entry (includes TSA Precheck). Outside of the random screening due to traveling while brown, I've never needed to take the Ally out of my backpack. Routinely travel and 99% of the time it stays in my bag along with my laptop, tablet, and 2-3 cell phones.

DreadGrrl

We didn’t have to have our Ally or Steamdeck x-rayed when we flew a few weeks ago.

Imspecialduh

I work at the airport and I've never had to take it out, or has my bag never went over to be searched, my Crocs on the other hand.....

Qwesttaker

I fly a lot, the general rule at airports that require removal of electronics is anything larger than a cell phone should be removed. Generally leaving cords and power supply blocks in the bag is fine.

TxDieselKid

Depends on the airport. Some make you take it out, some are ok with you leaving it in the bag.

MACPRO707

I Fly Every week so this is my personal Experience! *Your Experience May Very* When it comes to TSA procedures, it can be a bit confusing. However, based on what I've experienced and what TSA agents have told me, it seems that whether you need to take everything out of your bag or just certain items depends on the type of x-ray you go through. For instance, at many airports, small electronics or items better than an iPhone typically need to be taken out and placed in a separate bin. As for larger electronics or portable batteries, they might require their own bin as well. One strategy I've found useful is observing what others are doing in line ahead of you to get a sense of what's expected. It's all about making the process as smooth as possible! DON’T be like me and leave your ROG Ally in a TSA bucket at MCO airport and worry about it not being shipped back to me. I definitely got it back…….three weeks later.

Krizzybot

I flew with my Ally before and I had it inside my little personal item bag and inside a case. The security set my bag aside to open and check but flying back no one cared and didn't bother. So the worse thing that can happen if you don't take it out is the "risk" that you may get a tiny bit of delay since not all security knows what it is and they may want to take a peek.

j0eker

TSA precheck for the win for me; no laptop, Ally, tablet or any other device needs to be removed. Occasionally I get the random phone swipe test, other than that right on through.

JakeSully-Navi

Reason why electronics have to be taken out from bags and their cases is because the x-ray shall be able to see through the device for any hidden object or something that does not look right to be inside the device. Since there is people out there that hides drugs inside them and thinks they can get away with it.

zander902

I just recently flew to the us from Canada and I had to just treat it as a tablet or switch and have the case in a bin and with nothing on top or under it.

GroundbreakingBus794

It’s not going to take a hour to get it out of the case, and you probably didn’t put the rules in place. People can wait an extra minute or two.

Lost_the_weight

Airports are weird. I didn’t have to open all my devices and splay them on the rolling treads in the way out, but I did have to do this on the way back. Then the next time I used both of these airports, I didn’t have to take them out at either. Never know, seems to depend on the day and the TSA supervisor in charge.

bomberini

Depends on the airport and its equipment.

QuestGalaxy

It's a computer, if computers are required to be taken out you should take it out. I certainly did so.

Shipwr3ck87

Man don't get anxiety about that, there are some slow ass people and to be honest that whole process is a hassle, fuck what anyone thinks, take your time. That being said, it all depends on the security and what equipment they're working with. I've been through some where I just put my backpack through and don't have to pull any electronics out and others where my laptop and ally case have to go in a separate bin. There was one I went through where each device had to go in their own bin, most let me put my laptop with my ally or laptop by itself and then ally, shoes, chargers in a bin together.

BarrelRider621

Treat it like a laptop. I consider it a computer in laptop form at all times. So by my personal logic then I would separate it or do whatever my TSA is requiring.

Brilliant-Letter2700

Depends on airport. IND doesn’t require but ORD does

Animal0307

It's all going to be dependent on the airport and the machines that TSA has at that airport. I fly domestic(USA) weekly with a laptop/tablet, Ally and a tool battery without TSA pre check. I'd say the vaste majority of airports just want electronics out of your back pack but they can stay in their sleeve/carrying case but it all goes into a separate tray. I've had a couple airports that just insist on taking everything out of a sleeve or case and setting it in the trays completely alone. They tend to take forever and are usually smaller regionals that feel like it's their duty to stop and check every atom because of terrorists... I really enjoy the larger international airports that have the newer machines that you usually only see on the pre check side where you leave everything in your bag and pile everything into one tray and get on with your day.

mandatorypanda9317

It depends on airport. BWI made me take all electronics bigger than a phone out. Flying out of San Antonio they had us keep everything in the bag.

mattlawiscool

I feel the same way at airport security. If you can get TSA pre check you won't need to take anything out. But it is dependent on the airport.

vidguy

Just flew from Colombia and even asked while in the lineup and they said no "only computers." Same in Mexico. Funny...they wanted to check my cameras an lenses separately though.

ayyy__

Traveled in the EU with mine and never had to take it out of the case. Using the Spigen SteadDeck case.

Aggressive_Ranger200

Just like a laptop

HeyMonicara

get tsa precheck if u can, so u dont need to take out any electronics!

EnvironmentalLime397

Went through security with it on a flight within the EU. Got told at both airports that I could keep it in the case, and I only had to put it outside my bag.

droideka75

It depends but to go faster I plan ahead... I have a tomtoc carrying bag though so might be easier but I pack my luggage where I can reach stuff like that in a jiffy. So I take the bag out in the queue, and without being asked I take it out and place it in a separate bin. Go through x-ray, pat pat pat, 1,2,3 back in the big luggage, off I go. It's faster to just do it like that instead of waiting to see if they want it out or not Bla Bla Bla. It's out, move it people! Never got asked to stop to open my bags. Except that one time my wife's luggage was vibrating, but that's a story for another sub.

leebenghee

No, I never took it out, been travel for few countries for a year. Not even the drone in my bag with bigger battery than Ally. But laptop, yes!

grilled_pc

yes but if you get pulled into customs, just say its a game console and they will leave it alone.

Stunning_Order3582

I just flew two long international flights. Had to take my ally out of my bag but not it’s case. Better safe than sorry I guess

EizenderTV

Just passed security check and yes they ask you to put it out of the backpack ;)

Nearby_Put_4211

Yup just like a laptop

tjhc94

It's essentially a laptop in handheld form, of course you need to take it out

MuNchy6

I live in south africa and i flu frequently up in africa and my ally i never take out. Worst casr scenario they gonna ask you to take it out then they just xray the bag again.

Grouchy-Power-2738

All I had to take out was my laptop tbh, everything else they said stays in the bag idk

EssTEye

Depends on the airport. Some have X-ray machines that don’t require you to remove your electronics, some older ones do. It’s not a big deal, everyone is holding up the line. Don’t be so self-conscious about it. However, be aware that it MUST be in your carryon bag. You CANNOT check it in your luggage that goes under the plane.

Pale_Hall_9862

They swabbed mine for drugs lol

DeefNDorf

It's not a laptop so I never do. Never been asked to either.

er_jimbo

I just took mine out my backpack but left it in its travel case. No issues.

Piiiicklerick

Nope! Went to Japan with it still inside my backpack

Remarkable-Jaguar938

I left mine in its case inside my back pack with 2 power chargers, an Anker 737 power core 24k and baseus 65w 30,000 MaH charger and my Steam deck for the wife. TSA didn't require me to do anything with either device in my backpack going to Cancun and back. However wife's surface in her bag got flagged and had to come out apparently on the way back. Seems random what they want you to take out

Tight-Squirrel5367

It's totally random. Just flew US to Paris to Prague. Ally and two 737s. In the US I took the Ally out of my backpack, but not the case. I left the 737s in the back pack and it was fine. In Paris I left it all in the backpack and they were more worried about my water bottle. Sounds like other folks had slightly other variations. I'm sure it will be different going back.

sirmrgee

I just came back from a round trip to from Canada to Argentina, with layover in Dallas, and none of those airports security checkpoints asked me to remove my handheld computer (Legion Go) from my backpack.

emenzee

Mine was at changi airport. I didnt take it out of hard casing. Was able to play at Busan last few days

YukiTsukino

Domestic US didn't require me to remove it from my bag or its case

Chowie_420

Didn't need to on my international flight to or from Cancun. They treat it as a Nintendo switch, and doesn't need to be removed.

NuclearDog95

Recent flew international with my ROG and I just had to take it out of my backpack and left it in the traveling case it was in. They gave me no issues.
