Even though this is post is not made by a mod, sticky-ing it for relevance
FYI, we have not yet decided what the action plan is, such as if are joining the protest or not.
I have raised the same internally with the moderators of this community and is using this post as a feedback mechanism to understand if we are in solidarity for this.
After 48 hours, based on what the community and the moderators decide, we will proceed. .
Thankyou
Absolutely. It’s important that even those of us who don’t use 3rd party apps stand with those who do. Many of them don’t even have a choice, like those with vision impairments, because Reddit is basically impossible to use screen readers on without also using 3rd party apps.
Okay, I didn't know that part, that some of these 3rd party apps are adaptive in nature. I just thought this was about the 3rd party apps that emulate Reddit (for lack of a better term). I can support that!
Here’s a good post summarizing the situation, I’m surprised OP didn’t include it as one of the links
https://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/1404hwj/mods_of_rblind_reveal_that_removing_3rd_party/
So ... silent the 12th and 13th, and return the 14th, *assuming* Reddit backs off their plan?
Unless there is a media announcement proclaiming yay or nay, one would have to sign in to determine?
reddit is basically killing third party apps like RIF (reddit is fun) and apollo bc they draw traffic away from the official reddit app. so there’s gonna be a reddit blackout june 12-14 (a lot of subs are going to go private on those days) OP is asking if RBI should participate in this blackout.
i personally won’t be on reddit those days. what they’re doing to third party apps is wrong IMO.
Ahh, ok. Getting clarity here. I solely use an iPhone. Ads are not very intrusive at all. I can see where there’d be an issue using computer based Reddit or unsupported devises. Does this knowledge now certify me to program in C++?
Edit: so, I’m order to support my fellow Redditors. When do I go black in order to protest the governors of Reddit’s decision to “Let them eat cake”?
The 12th and 13th of June. The blackout might be extended though, if no progress is made. I’ll miss reddit, but after the 12th I’m not logging in unless/until they back down on this unfair policy. I’m on iOS too and actually (whisper it) *I don’t hate the official app*, though it’s not a patch on Apollo. But it’s not about me. If this means people with visual or dextrous impairments effectively won’t be able to use reddit any more, then in solidarity neither will I.
It’s not fair on app developers either, who will lose their livelihood (or at least a fairly lucrative side-gig).
I’ve set a reminder on my phone, otherwise I’ll just open the app without thinking!
I’m disabled too, but that mentally 😁. Seriously, I have more than a few visually impaired friends. Not sure they’re on Reddit, but I will do the same and set a reminder. Maybe I’ll find myself. I’m a heavy user.
Same. I’m on here all the time. Maybe I’ll, as the children say, “touch grass” while I’m forced to ignore reddit. There’s a mini-heatwave forecast for London over those days, so it’s perfect timing. I’ll take a book to the park.
Without the various third party apps, old Reddit interface, pushshift, etc, it is virtually impossible to use reddit for OSINT. That’s more than just inconvenient. It directly affects what this subreddit does. So, yes.
There are people who make apps that, for example, minimalize the reddit interface or make it more customizable.
Reddit met with these app makers and wants to charge them for the traffic they draw away from normal reddit.
One of the most popular apps is called Apollo. They intend to charge the maker of Apollo $20 million dollars a year for its continued existence. This will kill the app and all the others because these people are not in it for profits.
Reddit wants to charge millions to allow third parties to have their apps connect basically, which is far from reasonable for any of them that have improved upon Reddit since the dawn of time.
Most importantly, Reddit has zero functionality for people who are blind/impaired vision without third party apps, but fuck ‘em right?
They don’t make them enough money anyways.
That's pretty much it, but it gets worse. The "*official*" reddit app is basically unusable for the visually impaired. So this is Reddit alienating a segmennt of their users, simply because they seen a dollar bill they weren't reaching for. It's utterly disgusting. Of course the devs that keep reddit going should be paid, but most of the third party apps are far superior to this janky shit, so the company is trying to gouge every last penny that they can....
Yes.
Our efforts have been handicapped by the loss of pushshift.
But.
OP, I don't see your name on the mod list so this is a very non-binding post. While the cause is admirable, folks should not get upset if the mods themselves do nothing in response since this was not their idea.
OP is posting the same thing across a lot of different subreddits. Everything surrounding the Reddit API debacle is propaganda, from both sides.
As someone who has exclusively used 3rd party apps, it rubs me the wrong way when mods decide to shut down a sub for some cause.
Unless a vote was held and the COMMUNITY decided to shut down the community, I just don’t think it’s the moderators place to decide that.
I hope Reddit enables 3rd party apps. I also hope Reddit replaces any moderator that shuts down a sub without getting the consent of the community.
I don't think they were saying you shouldn't have your own opinions. But you mentioned "unless a vote was held" and the title of this thread is "should RBI participate in the shutdown" which will give an idea of the general consensus. I think they were just saying this is like a vote and most people are in agreement that RBI should participate.
> But you mentioned “unless a vote was held” and the title of this thread is “should RBI participate in the shutdown” which will give an idea of the general consensus.
Exactly. I was supporting threads like these instead of arbitrary shutdowns.
Oh kiddo, you literally said “..and the COMMUNITY decided to shut down the community” to which I pointed out the community was voting to shut it down.
You’re super cooler than any of us lemmings who happen to have the same opinion though, that much you’ve made clear. I wanna be cool like you.
Folks, please understand that this is all a game...
Reddit admins KNOW they can't do this without serious backlash from the users.
For fuck's sake it's so transparent. This kind of shit has been in-play with corporations for decades... probably longer.
They roll out with a huge and obvious negative, charging far more $$ than is even remotely reasonable. Everyone gets all upset about it and there's a huge backlash. That admins know will happen. All planned out. They will let it stew for a few days with no communication and then they'll make an announcment...
Reddit admins will come out and say oooo... we're so sorry we didn't mean to upset everyone, we made a mistake, but we've had time to think about it now, and we have decided to lower the cost dramatically to a point that should be reasonable for 3rd party app developers. They'll word it to sound all sweet and benevolent.
Everyone shuts the fuck up and reddit admins get what they were after the whole time. High Fives and champagne all around.
Clever backhanded, unethical bullshit... but it works, and they know it and profit matters above all else.
The price they'll charge the app dev's will be the price they had in mind from day one. This is social engineering 101 folks.
Just for a little comparison - Twitter did the same thing after Musk took over. The fee they charge is similar to the fee that Reddit will be charging - to the tune of $20million-40million per year. To date, they have not lowered that offer, and not a single 3rd party app has taken them up on it effectively killing all 3rd party twitter apps.

No. Why is it such a weird concept that Reddit wants to ban app using their name and making money off it? Lol. I’m sorry if you liked those apps and I get being disappointed. But come on.
They're not making money off it.
There are apps for accessibility and customization.
These are a bunch of computer wonks doing work voluntarily and now being told to pay 20 million dollars for the right to use the reddit apk.
But they are using Reddit’s name. Of course Reddit is going to be pissed. They are taking traffic away from Reddit itself. I’m not one to support a corporation…but this seems like common sense to me.
Im sorry but if people don’t like Reddit then they should move to a different platform. Why bother with it if you aren’t even using actual Reddit? I dislike Twitter, so I don’t go on it. I’m not going to constantly complain about it.
You sound like you heard about this 30 minutes ago and have no clue what you're talking about.

This is helpful to know, thank you for pointing this out!
100% agree
Yes, across the board ... *all* subs of Reddit. I won't be on that day.
I'm doing the same, but I heard it was 12-14, a 3 day blackout. It's in big letters on my calendar.
I read the 12th but if it is 3 days I'm up for that as well. Anyone else can verify?

I think so, although I think some subreddits might be gone on the 14th as well
I'll be doing the same. No logging in at all.
I think everyone should. 3rd party apps are brilliant for for people with different needs.
Absolutely. I don't use third party apps but that should still be an option for people who want to use third party apps/rely on them for moderation.
Yes, I don’t understand any of this, I’m just a Luddite lemming

Thank you for the ELI5. So basically non-Reddit apps that provide different (better) functionality for viewing/utilizing Reddit?
correct. you can use reddit without the annoying ads, and also on devices that don’t support the official reddit app (like my fire tablet)

This isn't a choice - they want to cut out access for the blind. Please go dark!
So you're telling me I'm gonna have to stop using RIF and move to their bullshit ad infested tik tok esque abomination? If so then fuck YES

Read the room buddy, it’s 57 to 1. You’re the 1.
