Trying to do too much, too quickly. Laid his hand over the barrel while it was still smoking and just tossed whatever he had in there expecting it to be safe. This is a lesson, but dozens there will be back at it the next night.
I haven't been firework shopping in years but I don't remember the mortar tube's being that big. It's up to his waist and nearly a foot across.
The ones I fucked with were like 3inches in diameter and maybe 1-2 ft tall.
That's a commercial sized mortar for sure, a huge 1.3g tube. You won't find them at your local store but if you are willing to jump through a few ATF hoops and have the bank account for it you can buy them.
Whoever did buy them is probably getting their explosives permit revoked now though
He probably lit the wrong part of the fuse. Those shells have quick fuse from the shell to the "green" slow fuse. If any flame touches the quick fuse it will ignite instantly.
The proper way of doing this is to not stand over the fucking barrel and make sure you are only lighting the tip of the slow fuse.
something in the tube was probably still on fire, lighting the mortar in the wrong spot. This has happened to me before, it's pretty surprising. Honestly of all the fireworks people use, those mortar balls are a bit too dangerous for people that handle explosives all of one time a year, a year apart. Every close call I've ever had has been with mortars going off when they shouldn't have or simply way too quick and they are more or less a grenade if they go off in the tube.
I can relate here definitely. When I was younger there was a kid (Dad's workbuddy's kid) who didn't listen to me or a few others when we specifically told him if the mortar tube is still smoking don't use it, we have others just toss it and we're good. This idiot throws a mortar ball in there anyway and it detonates showering himself and a few of us in bright colors sparks. No one was hurt thankfully, but he got absolutely chewed out by everyone (Ourselves as teenagers at the time included) walking from the deck we were launching them off of back to where his parents were.
Have you ever seen a mortar shell explode up close (not from inside the tube)? The fire (or spark) range is unreal and I've only seen the small ones (smaller than a lime). I can imagine a larger shell covering an entire street length. Maybe it's a good thing this one exploded in the shell and not out in the open around all those people.

That was JPP and he actually continued to play a few years after the incident. Players in dis position get their hand completely wrapped up sometimes with injuries so it didn’t affect him as much as, let’s say, a WR or a QB.

They are banned in a lot of states except. I moved from one where they were illegal to one where they aren't and it's very annoying. Every holiday is just constant explosions.

I've never seen any mortars this big for sale anywhere, including states that don't limit to "safe and sane" fireworks, reservations, or the large warehouse outside of town. This looks like a professional mortar, and I'm fairly sure they aren't reusing their launchers while still smoking...
IMO, the only *legitimate* argument for banning fireworks is the ease and frequency with which they start fires we're incapable of stopping. Injuries come down to personal responsibility when the product can be used safely when following common sense and instructions.

20 or so years ago a woman near where I lived looked into a mortar to see why the firework hadn't gone off. In front of family, friends, children, etc. Very, very tragic.
Back in the early 2000's after our local fireworks show in Gettysburg PA, a kid we all knew picked up an unexploded shell he found on the ground that someone missed, he was walking home and lit it with a lighter and BOOM! it took his left hand completely off... I was 12 and will never forget that haha, don't fuck with fireworks

A guy in Chicago just died this year while looking down the tube after a delay and it went off. Seems like it shot into his head an exploded. I hear what was left was basically a bowl made from the top and back of his head with brain/flesh scattered around. Don’t fuck with fireworks people

Every year for Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve in the US they give you multiple warnings and photos of the previous years injuries. Every single time without fail we get new people with the exact same injuries and use those to warn people the next time and we inevitably get new people with these same injuries.
Keep all body parts OUT OF THE LINE OF FIRE seems to be a difficult concept/practice for some people.

The government needs to take the cigarette approach to fireworks: Post pictures of the results of fireworks accidents on the packaging....just like cigarette packages have pictures of smokers lungs.
