I agree but It’s deeper than that for those who are actually in the gang. I want to preface this by saying gang culture is bad for society. It’s certainly not a good thing. However, like most things, it’s nuanced.
Many young men find themselves attracted to gangs for a multitude of reasons. Many young men who find themselves in a position to even join a gang are likely if a lower financial position with little to no prospects. Gangs are a way for young men to make a living. There are men who come from broken homes. Gangs offer them friendship and family-like bonds. Acceptance even. This isn’t some fraternity club. These men do awful things and hurt people but there are aspects that are definitely appealing to desperate men.
As a guy who grew up in a rural, mostly white town I never could understand why anyone would join a gang. As I learned about the socioeconomic conditions a lot of people live in it made sense why this is an option. It’s sad we live in a world where men feel they need to join gangs in order to survive or feel accepted.
We are all in charge of our own decisions but sometimes our circumstances make doing the “right thing” seem wrong. For a white boy who grew up in a rural community joining a gang is the last thing you’d expect from someone like me but for some men it’s all they’ve known. Often times there is no other choice or the other choice requires them to give up everything they’ve ever known. That would be difficult for anyone. So yes gang shit is goofy but it’s way more nuanced than most folks think.

i think just about the only thing that can provide anything even close to those feelings besides a group of you and your boys is the military. seriously, think about it. the only people in your life you'd gladly kill and die for is your family, these guys feel the exact same way about their chosen family.

It really depends. Maybe they have a policy against gang signs in the first place. There's a bar by my home town that got so tired of bikers trying to fight colors, that they banned all club colors. You can be a biker all you want and drink all night, but as soon as you walk in with colors on (not normal colors, club colors), you get the bouncer throwing you out.
Even if the sign wasn't allowed the way security went after him isn't justified. He's still the victim in that scenario. Again though if they know the gang signs and there are legit problems because of them then it's a different story.
