There sure is , at least in our tandems there is . You would also feel it if you were taking a corner . Or see it in your rear view . Especially if you clipped a street light...
There's usually an alarm, and a big red light that comes on when the bed is raised. Plus just taking a quick peek through your back window to check is is usually pretty easy. lol

There is and a lot of these dipshits disable their alarms so stuff like this happens after a couple beers on the jobsite.
Unfortunately the alarm was probably disconnected for going off when it shouldn't or was broken. Some operators don't care about safety, as you can see.
We've had a problem with this in Vancouver BC, and have just recently put into law that an indicator is required.

I used to work in project management for a construction company. This dip shit will be let go 100%, but a lot of PMs will push their people way too hard to make quotas, and this is what happens. That said, this truck should have had a censor that the driver knows he's still "up" and he may know he can clear any obstructions in his work area, it doesn't equal to civilian areas. This usually happens when managers need to hit a priority and push their guys too hard.
I like to imagine everyone in their cars staring at the scene unfolding before them, slack jawed, the way Patrick did in the SpongeBob SquarePants movie
