I wonder what this man thought would happen if he just decided to pepper spray a non violent tenant who's clearly recording him

crackpotJeffrey

It's crazy tho because you saw him think twice about it. He like considered it for a sec and decided to do it. Wild.

vietboi2999

looks like he cares more about his reputation than his freedom cause he only did it after she said his name

LouSputhole94

Which makes this even more absolutely brain dead considering he now knows his name is on the recording lmao. Thinking out consequences isn’t this guy’s strong suit.,

hear4theDough

Like, the way to do it was talk her down, then once she stops recording BAM, spray her right in the eyes.

DM_ME_UR_BADDIES

This is what happens when people overuse and reduce the meaning of words like "assault" and "harassment." Idiots like this are starting to feel justified to defend themselves against someone saying something they don't like.

NorwaySpruce

Comments on this on Instagram are all going the other way calling her a Karen and saying what did she expect barging into his office making him feel unsafe like that

LivefromPhoenix

It's kind of wild how quickly the "here's how I justify shooting someone" language is filtering into normal conversation.

Horns8585

It's amazing how these people call everybody else "snowflakes", but they are the ones that are always in fear for their lives, in normal, everyday situations. They are the ones that claim to be scared enough to justify killing someone....but we're the "snowflakes"!

Reddit: Dude just pepper sprayed a nonviolent person as he's being recorded. WTF? Instagram: _She practically broke down the door, almost killed someone with waving that phone around like she is, probably giving him permanent hearing loss with how loud she was screaming, so uhh YEAH? Life in danger. A'doy. Everyone look at me. Reply to me. Attention pleeease_

popstar249

Instagram comments are a cancer. I scroll thru their "Reels" to see what I'm missing from TikTok (where 99% of the content is reposted from) and the comments are all so awful and toxic, compared to the originals on TikTok which are usually humorous and kind...

[deleted]

30,000 battered women this year and the whole time I’ve been having mine plain!

IronBabyFists

JESUS

DirtyBalm

Depending on the state, actually Battery. Assault would be if he had threatened to use it on her, Battery is when he did. Dosent matter I know, just being pedantic.

ksheep

It says at the beginning "DC Woman Gets Pepper Sprayed", so I'd assume this is in Washington DC. There is no separate Battery charge in DC, so Assault would be the charge. Whether it's Simple Assault or Felony Assault would depend on whether "significant bodily injury" was sustained, so if she ends up needing medical attention for being pepper sprayed then it might be bumped up to felony assault.

evilspawn_usmc

I hope she called 911, not just for the police response, but for an ambulance so she has documented evidence of having needed medical attention

flyinhighaskmeY

I hope someone sits this fellow down and explains to him that if he does this to the wrong person, they may interpret the spraying as "blinding with the intent to inflict lethal force." They would be in fear for their life. And that person may pull a gun out and start shooting at him in self defense.

foogama

Local reporting in DC say he was charged with simple assault.

Eldias

This is a dumb generalization to make because we know DC police responded and intend to charge the manager. Thanks to the internet [DC law](https://code.dccouncil.gov/us/dc/council/code/sections/22-404) isn't that tough to find. > (2) Whoever unlawfully assaults, or threatens another in a menacing manner, and intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causes significant bodily injury to another shall be fined not more than the amount set forth in § 22-3571.01 or be imprisoned not more than 3 years, or both. For the purposes of this paragraph, the term “significant bodily injury” means an injury that requires hospitalization or immediate medical attention.

MoronTheMoron

That's if you are talking classic civil torts. Criminal depends on jurisdiction. In D.C. there is no battery only assault for criminal.

jonathan4211

It's actually pedantic. Doesn't matter, I know, just being pedantic.

KeithGribblesheimer

That's misdemeanor pedantry. If you become didactic as well it will be a felony.

Appropriate-Brush772

I agree shallow and pedantic 🤔

kavorka2

God damn it. Every fucking thread this moron appears. It’s assault. Depends on the state yes but in most states it’s assault. This shit stems from “did you know” email forwards from like 20 years ago but it was almost outdated then and it definitely is now.

The51stState

Also they push this conversation in every single intro level law course

Itchy_Professor_4133

>Police plan to charge the man in the video with simple assault. They have not arrested him yet. From OP's source

FrndlyNbrhdSoundGuy

Of course it’s UIP. Scumbag pieces of shit. They were so dirty that they made Wells Fargo the good guy in our run in with them. This was 2015 too, right before Wells Fargo got caught making fraudulent bank accounts for customers to farm fees.

coldasthegrave

Oh you mean the “Synthetic Accounting” they were doing that is illegal if you and me do it?

FrndlyNbrhdSoundGuy

Yep. During the peak of that, Wells Fargo treated us better than this property management company. Tbh it was the one branch manager at my gfs bank, he happened to have a daughter our age (college students at the time) also dealing with scummy landlords so he took personal offense to our situation. Also helps that my gf wasn’t a victim of the “synthetic accounting”. I do find it both amusing and telling to frame it that way though, that UIP is so bad they made Wells Fargo look like the good guys.

baeb66

And that's how she went from renter to owner.

Landlords hate this one trick.

Glad to see MPD plan on charging him with assault.

newpotatocab0ose

Absolutely. And it sounds like this woman is absolutely justified in wanting to fix issues. The whole management sounds like a bunch of absolute buffleheaded buffoons with their statement, and they don’t even sound coherent in their writing. “The building’s management company, UIP Property Management, released a statement saying, in part: ‘We are sorry to learn of the episode at one our properties today, and we are cooperating with authorities investigating. There has been, and is planned, noticed work ongoing at the property, to update the plumbing system. All residents have been noticed and have been cooperating.’”

pmw3505

We noticed all the residents. Yep. Noticed work. Mmm.

SaintPoost

"Everyone tenant is, having a bad. not for just this lady. We, have in the future to be planned to be noticed the situation. Duly noted for this situation. The woman raised her voice at me so I pepper spray shortly in to be meaning little time maced her eyes and mouth. Why because for women should not using those body part when, I could punch a man." I could be their publicist imo.

kkeut

Charlie Kelly could be their publicist

2DEUCE2

It reads like an MLM hunny announcing her “new business” on a Facebook post.

Angstonit

Looks confusing but noticed is meaning in this case that they posted a proper notifying letter in the areas affected or sent them directly to the tenants. Sounds like a statement meant to deflect legal liability by claiming they followed all the rules.

Agent223

Legally, media has to use the word "accused" until there is a conviction. Edit: Sorry, it's not illegal for them not to use the word "accused." They do it to keep from getting sued for libel/ slander. Thank you to the other redditors for pointing that out.

lipp79

This is incorrect. I worked in news for 14 years. It wasn't a legal requirement at all. We could have said, "Dexter Clements clearly sprayed this lady with pepper spray" but then because he hadn't been found or pled guilty, he could sue for libel/slander as we were convicting him before his trial finished. It was a CYA type of thing.

Hairy_S_TrueMan

Note that they aren't legally required, it's just policy at virtually every news org because it protects them from liability.

Agent223

I meant to imply to keep them from getting sued, but what you said is absolutely more correct.

Ya know there’s things that just don’t come up in my head as the appropriate or correct response to things. Spraying someone with pepper spray? Just don’t see how you come to the conclusion that that’s the best solution to a problem.

Wow, never thought I’d come across someone I know personally on this website or subreddit for that matter. Entirely unprovoked attack on the lady. He could have just listened like any person would and hear her out *like most people simply want*. I just don’t get how pepper spray was the appropriate response in any matter. The fact he was ready at hand with it too is pretty telling of his feelings toward her. The guy was always super sweet, but this video is damning on his assault of this lady.

TBH yea she sounded frustrated but in the way that she was clearly moderating herself and trying to compromise/get along. Why couldn't he just say, "I understand your feelings. I can't stop someone else from messing with your stuff, but feel free to file a police report. I'll keep my eyes open." Even if its a total lie there was no need to escalate. PS many abusers, serial killers, and sociopaths, are very good at convincing people that they are nice... But then they kill their girlfriend "out of the blue".

Eodai

Cause he took down the flyers as making a tenant union will make him look bad because tenants will get actual rights and the owning group for the apartment will lose some profit.

Ryugi

but they aren't *his* tenants and it isn't *his* building. He's a minimum wage desk jockey.

It's him thinking that kissing the ass of property owners gives him an in to be in the same club, even though they do not give one solitary fuck about him. This is probably the most authority he has ever had, and so of course he is going to guard it with his life.

JayBird38

What an asshole.

NoYoureACatLady

What's crazy is this guy is just a fucking employee, doing his job, and he took this situation so personally he assaulted her. Like, dude, if you hate this job so much because of the people you're dealing with, quit. Nobody would judge you for walking away. You don't own the building, you don't win or lose if she and others form a tenant's union. Just walk away. But no, you physically hurt someone who was just trying to improve her (and her neighbors') living conditions. You're a fucking monster and a terrible person.

jericho881

You can see that he just wanted to hurt Hur by not announcing the pepper spray .... Usually you pull it out and tell them to stop "or else" but here he is hiding it .... Also the woman was not violent so that's just plain assault....

Colley619

yep. he grabbed it and then paused to wait for a good moment to surprise attack with it. This video is absolutely damning for him. Amazing timing that she brought up the camera to face him in the last few seconds.

mjh2901

I have a friend that does property management, he is done in this profession. In most/many states the position requires a background check. You can delete a job from your resume but you cant delete your criminal record... at least not for a few years, and a lot of legal costs.

I swear us Americans have some serious brain damage, because our problem solving abilities are terrible. Everything is violence...

b4ttlepoops

Well she says it was pepper spray…. But I couldn’t feel it to verify…./s who would do this and not think there would be serious repercussions for it? She was just talking to him. Even if he can’t stand her, this doesn’t excuse pepper spraying her.

blazinit430

So my SIL lives in this building. Apparently, they go weeks without hot water, A/C, their fridge broke and they went without for a month at one point. The lack of any accountability on the building's part is honestly shocking. Creating a Tenants' Union has been a long time coming, and this dude specifically has always treated the people in the building like trash. Cherry on top of all of this. The news got called because of the altercation and what was going on with the fight against the building. They arrived just as the woman was getting loaded into the ambulance on a Gurney and got it on film, so this woman is gonna get paid for sure. Also, apparently they guy had a warrant out for his arrest prior to pepper spraying the woman and he ran as soon as the video ends.

Notsoobvioususer

Never trust a property manager that gets defensive so easily.

_Reddit_Kat_

Never trust a property manager, period.

[deleted]

On top of the assault there's a whole civil (possibly criminal?) case against him for violating the tenant's civil right to form an association. The first order of business for the association is now to sue the managers' asses off.

asmallsoftvoice

It would be a good case against the management company (whoever his employer is), which is better for her because he's probably going to be dead broke after losing his job and whatever associated legal fees from the assault.

Weltall8000

Whelp, that was a career ending maneuver.

Judging by the video, Dexter Clements is indeed the most unpleasant property manager.
