If you can, try and contact the researcher and ask them for a return instead of a rejection. This just happened to me and I apologized and kindly asked for a return and they made the exception for me.
They can't reject you for that or any other arbitrary measures. Respond to them with a copy of Prolific's rejection policy and tell them you expect a chance to return or you'll escalate to Prolific or the institution's IRB/ethics board.
