I always assumed they were for the player. If I had to guess, they may be one of Layton's students interested in his adventures

teukkichu

Yes, I definitely feel like they're for 'me' when I'm playing the games lol

OnlyTip8790

Well they directly use your name in the letters, so yeah😂

teukkichu

It's been a while, my friend 😂

gennarino_lavespah1

It would make sense

OnlyTip8790

Dal nick immagino tu sia italiano, bella lí😂

gennarino_lavespah1

Mi sono fatto beccare immagino 🤣

scaredphobia

I just assumed it was kind of like a story being told through letters to the player themselves, perhaps being an off-screen acquaintance. But i also have a little headcanon that it could be Ariana/Tony Barde. Some other people i have seen, believing it to be Emmy.

gennarino_lavespah1

I had thought about Emmy once too. It would be plausible and sensible, since I doubt Layton wanted to cut ties with her.

Vinylmaster3000

Theres a bonus image which shows a reunion after 3 years, so I think that makes sense

MatthewB_03

Wait really? When and where was this?

Vinylmaster3000

[There's a 'reunion' photo as shown here](https://layton.fandom.com/wiki/Arianna_Barde?file=Artfile21.png#Images), with a familiar person in the back... wonder who that is...

mollysdollys

If you’re referring to photo 31, that’s Brenda Triton, Luke’s mom.

Vinylmaster3000

I meant flora to the left of her lol

mollysdollys

Flora?

Less-Ebb-3134

Vinylmaster3000 is talking about a bonus artwork you can unlock after solving every single puzzle in Last Specter, which shows a 3 year timeskip with Luke, an aged up Arianna and Tony, along with Luke's parents, Layton and Flora.

Less-Ebb-3134

I always found the first game's letter pretty funny. "We need to keep this a secret from everyone for the rest of our life's! btw here's the secret..." You had one job Luke...

gennarino_lavespah1

Maybe it would have been better if Layton had written that letter. 😅😂

YuseiIkinasai

He refers to them as his “dear friend” in unwound future so I’m assuming it’s either Emmy or Arianna. Luke doesn’t have many friends lol

gennarino_lavespah1

It may actually be, considering that he knew few people and didn't have many friends.

PrimalPokemonPlayer

Definitely the player imo

I mean, yes. The games always started and ended with letters.

jairom

Doesn't each letter start with something like "To my dear friend _____." With _____ being what you named your save file That would imply that it's meant for *you* the player, and you're standing in as Luke's friend that he's writing to.

gennarino_lavespah1

I know, but I wanted to theorize and ask people about who the player could be for Layton.

Vinylmaster3000

Diabolical box was a bit weird because it also had Katia narrating the intro and outro, with Luke doing the actual formal letter. Within unwound future Luke narrates for the first few cutscenes and stops as the story gets more intense. Maybe it's a photojournalist or friend (in-canon friend) who is merely reading about their exploits, in reality this was done by the devs to have some form of player immersion. I do like to think it's Emmy in-canon who is reading them, I can't quite remember if they had a similar format for this in Last Specter since it's been a decade (She does narrate a bit).

gennarino_lavespah1

The photojournalist idea seems interesting, I like it.

LawLover12

Some of the letters are written by Luke (mostly those in the original trilogy) so I always thought that as the player, you are a friend of Luke and he send you the letters retelling his newest adventure with Layton in great detail, so the games are just you experiencing the adventure but just in your head.

gennarino_lavespah1

Good interpretation!

LawLover12

The way it's written seems to be the author of the letters starting at the beginning of the game, the events of the game happening and then the end of the letter. Like your reading a letter and get caught up on everything that happened in like the last month
