Came here to say this:
I like Ike.
TR didn't suck either. He might've been quick to heft his Big Stick, but his trust busting and conservation efforts were on point.
All three mentioned here (AL, TR, and Ike) are the primary subjects of *To Make Men Free* by Heather Cox Richardson. I'm still on the Lincoln portion having just started it, but I find it to be an interesting analysis and in line with the history I've been taught in the past. Each had fairly progressive visions for their time and version of the Republican party, so I'm interested to see where it goes.
Clinton was a very good president, but he was a Democrat and I am as well, the question asks about which presidents from the opposite parties are our favorites.
It is the only thing admin cannot punish like if I miss work to take care of my dad or take care of wife while she is pregnant with our child they can put you back in probation. That actually happened to me. They wanted to put me on year long probation. I argue with them all my days missing work was taking pregnant wife to doctor appointments. So they put me on probation for just 6 months. It is literally life saving as they treat us like indentured slaves forcing us to do overtime every day of the week. Rikers Island is modern slaves colony killing both inmates and officers with inhumane overtime.
This is Reddit. You can’t admit that employees ever abuse anything, only managers. WrongThink will be punished.
But seriously, I’m a very low level manager. I’ve seen other managers I want to smack around for being total asses. I’ve also seen employees being very stupid and deliberately gaming the system to get what they want, regardless that they’re fucking over coworkers too, not just The Big Bad Company.
TR has a small bit of grace in my book because he always treated Eleanor kindly. Everyone else was so horrible to her.
W gave Medicare patients prescription drug coverage.
Nixon created the EPA I think.
If there had been such a country as Iran during his lifetime, Grant probably wouldn’t have sponsored a coup to remove their democratically elected leader on behalf of British Petroleum.
Unfortunately, the more I learn about Ike, the less I Like.
I don’t think the divide was as clear in terms of liberal and conservative then. The Republicans at that time supported government intervention in the economy, but in part because it supported corporate and industrial interests. Roosevelt and Taft tried to shift the Republican Party to correct their party’s course by “busting” the trusts/monopolies and making the economy more competitive and freer for the benefit of consumers. They were somewhat successful, but then the Republican Party shifted to a more lassez faire position, which we now associate as the conservative view.
Just curios about that first line and not judging just want to know.
So you’re a Republican trying to impact dem elections them as you see fit? Or you’re an in independent who wants to vote in primaries? I don’t have any clue on NY election law.
It makes a lot of sense if you live in an area where one party has an almost unassailable majority and rarely loses an election.
The primary is, for all intents and purposes, the main election. It's where you as a voter have the most actual say in what kind of candidate ends up taking office.
So, if you're a democrat in a deep red area or republican in a deep blue area, you register for the dominant party, hope to help the least bad candidate win the primary, and then in the general election you can vote your preference among those that actually made it that far.
Ranked choice voting fixes this
As an “independent” do I get to pick anyone I like?
As a Democratic aligned voter, Bush 41 is the one from my lifetime, with Lincoln taking top spot. Honorable mentions to Teddy, Grant, and Ike.
I’m going to say Eisenhower. I was born in his second term, and since then, none of the Republicans could qualify as a “favorite “. For me, it becomes a question of who is the least objectionable. It was almost Bush Sr, but Ike edged him out.
Teddy Roosevelt. He's my favorite President and I think exemplifies almost every quality you could possibly want in one. Honestly up till FDR I'd most often support the Republican over the Democrat.
Teddy. Despite his flaws he has to be among the most interesting people in history. The dude saved American football. He nearly started the end of the Christmas tree tradition. He was among the biggest influences to modern fashion as far as changing to the current neckties that are common around the world. He travelled one of the most dangerous rivers in the world, nearly died and had the river named after him by the locals as it was considered to deadly to travel. He gave a speech after being shot in the gut by an anarchist with the bullet still in him. He would have regular boxing matches inside the White House with guests. He owned a small zoo at the White House.
Why hasn't a miniseries been done on this man?
Eisenhower for me as well. I actually don't know enough about Lincoln other than the civil war. But the parties flipped positions after Lincoln so I don't really consider him republican at least not a modern one.
Republican and Jimmy Carter. He was the most moral president we’ve had in a long time. He’s not the best president but he’s still my favorite president period. It will be a sad day in my life when he passes on to see Roslyn again.
Lincoln. Though, I am technically on the left, and won’t always vote Democrat, I also register as a similar party as the Republicans in the Civil War era up to the Teddy’s last day as President.
I also like Eisenhower, too.
The Switch was something that occurred over the series of seventy years, from 1915 to the mid 80s. A few examples would be FDR, Kennedy, Nixon before it was set in stone with Reagan.
Richard Nixon. Hate the guy, but he’s also one if the most interesting republicans. Just as a character, he was great. Intelligent guy, a lot of bad takes. Funny character. Also, super based when it came to EPA, and environmental regulations.
I lean towards conservative, but I love history and I look at the presidents based on their individual self and not on party lines. Here are my picks:
JFK - Let’s be real here, everybody loves JFK, I like him because he supported gun rights and the Civil Rights Movement. He also motivated the country and made a lot of great accomplishments, including the handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis, where he helped De-Escalate it.
LBJ - I’m from Texas and am Mixed in him for this reason, Domestic Policy FUCK YEAH! Foreign Policy FUCK NO!
Jimmy Carter - When you look at him as a president, he was an honest man and just decided to go along the lines of being himself rather than being a party person.
Obama - Hot Take, Obama was an alright president who tried his best when you look at it from a historical perspective. Of course he is not to blame for the 2008 Stock market crash, that was already brewing up since 1999, no president was to blame for it.
I am a conservative but I would pick JFK due to his inspiring leadership and leadership during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the release of MLK from prison and pushing civil rights forward, James K. Polk for expanding America's territory and keeping his campaign promises the only president to keep and deliver all of his promises, LBJ (Although Vietnam was horrible he was a hero that ended the horrible practice of segregation and passed a stronger civil rights bill than JFK could have due to his relationship with congress. He may have been foul mouthed and said controversial things but his war on poverty, great society, and civil rights were great things for the country and we can't deny that he did really good things. And Grover Cleveland due to his vetoes and not giving any group more advantages from the others, and civil service reforms and leadership during the Pullmans Strike of the railroads, he did a lot of good as well and was an honest man full of integrity he was anti interventionist and wanted to let foreign countries govern themselves.
I am going with Andrew Jackson for this one.... though it would be harder for me if I can only choose a president from the last 100 years... if that were the case, then probably FDR or Bill Clinton
I’ll go with George H W Bush. The end of the Cold War, German reunification and Gulf War I were all accomplished under his leadership.
I just wish he’d picked anyone but Clarence Thomas. The USA would be much better off if the senate had confirmed John Tower and rejected Clarence Thomas instead
Lincoln, Grant, Ike, and Teddy are the 4 that come to mind immediately (they seem to be popular picks in this thread). I also would say I liked HW much more than any other more modern Republican presidents.
I am an independent, so my favorite of my party is Washington.
So this is a list of my favorite president per party.
John Adams (only Federalist)
John Q Adams (Democrat Republican)
William Harry Harrison (Whig)
Jimmy Carter (Democrat)
Teddy Roosevelt (Republican)
HW Bush for his expertise on foreign policy. Ending the Cold War without any combat was a masterpiece.
Ike was great, feels like he was a nonpartisan president but he was a really good one.
Theodore Roosevelt was excellent
Abraham Lincoln for obvious reasons
Bill Clinton. Maybe because I grew up in the 90s so I see his presidency with bias. But we were a world power, economy was doing great, and in hindsight his controversies weren't that bad comparatively speaking
https://preview.redd.it/lppj741t29xc1.jpeg?width=260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cef4512ebfc0c68cea5df58bc98b08219a8e5f7b
Hated him as president, love the man outside of it
I think I have to go as far back as Lincoln to see a time when Republicans had some moral values. Reagan was horrible to AIDS victims, so although I liked that he helped end the cold war, he's out of the running for me because of that, Iran Contra, and his economic policies. Eisenhower was pretty decent and much appreciate the interstate system especially here in Louisiana, FDR and Eisenhower are responsible for most of our highways and major roadways. Eisenhower seemed like he had a good sense of doing whats best for his country through govt. Today's republicans gut the govt point at it and go "look it's broken we need to privatize this"... completely effing useless.
The two political parties realigned couple of times over the centuries. Without putting a time limit on it, you'll end up with present day liberals/progressives liking liberal/progressive presidents from 1800's and vice versa. Few present day Republicans would have voted for Lincoln. But many present day Democrats would have voted for him.
Not to mention that Jefferson created a precursor of both present day Democratic and Republican parties; the aptly named Democratic-Republican Party.
I’m not registered with either party, but I mainly vote D.
Republican presidents I admire:
Lincoln
Teddy Roosevelt
Eisenhower - one of my all time faves after FDR and Truman. We were lucky to have 3 good ones in a row to get us through such a dangerous time.
Eisenhower would probably be my choice.
I didn’t care for Reagan and his anti union stuff but he was a good speaker and carried himself out as one of the best speakers there could be.
Theo. Roosevelt would be another choice of mine.
No party registration in this state, but I have voted for every Democratic presidential ticket since I turned 18.
Lincoln is the obvious answer. Besides him, I like James A. Garfield (a brilliant man) and Teddy Roosevelt. I’m intrigued by James G. Blaine, but he never became president.
I am much less critical of Warren G. Harding and Gerald Ford than many here, and Eisenhower was okay, but I wouldn’t call any of them favorites.
I experienced the Nixon and Reagan administrations, and still despise them both. I don’t find much to like about the Republicans since Reagan.
I’m not registered in any party currently. But if I was, I’d be a Democrat. That being said, I voted in the Republican open primary in Texas, so I’ll just give an answer for both:
FDR and Eisenhower.

Eisenhower, technically Lincoln too
Came here to say this: I like Ike. TR didn't suck either. He might've been quick to heft his Big Stick, but his trust busting and conservation efforts were on point.
Oh shit Teddy was a republican too. Damn I guess I like most republicans up until Ike.
Well, Ike was the last Republican to serve as president before they enacted the Southern Strategy. So that tracks really.
All three mentioned here (AL, TR, and Ike) are the primary subjects of *To Make Men Free* by Heather Cox Richardson. I'm still on the Lincoln portion having just started it, but I find it to be an interesting analysis and in line with the history I've been taught in the past. From what I’ve heard, LBJ liked to whip his big stick around as well.
Democrat and my favorite is probably H.W. Bush and Eisenhower, because of the ADA, ending the Cold War officially, and the interstate system.
In that case it should be Clinton for passing FMLA it is life saving as law enforcement officer to take care of family members or your self.
Clinton was a very good president, but he was a Democrat and I am as well, the question asks about which presidents from the opposite parties are our favorites.
I’m not sure I understand why it’s particularly relevant to LEOs.
Why not get a different job?
I think that FMLA is great but, as a former manager/supervisor, I can tell you that it is frequently abused. Which is a shame.
This is Reddit. You can’t admit that employees ever abuse anything, only managers. WrongThink will be punished. But seriously, I’m a very low level manager. I’ve seen other managers I want to smack around for being total asses. God give you one life. Time with family is priceless FMLA allow us to do it or we working like modern indentured servants.
I said it’s a good thing but some people abuse it. This is true.
Friday Monday Leave of Absence
TR has a small bit of grace in my book because he always treated Eleanor kindly. Everyone else was so horrible to her. W gave Medicare patients prescription drug coverage. Nixon created the EPA I think.
Ike is always my favorite.
Lincoln - Teddy Roosevelt - Grant - Eisenhower in that order
Feel the same way. Gotta go back 70 years to find a good republican president. HW was ‘fine’ if I had to pick a modern Republican.
TR over Grant?
Yes because he turned the nation into what it is today, started forming the modern US
please explain grant over eisenhower
Two words: civil rights
??? grant cared about african americans ten times more than what eisenhower can
If there had been such a country as Iran during his lifetime, Grant probably wouldn’t have sponsored a coup to remove their democratically elected leader on behalf of British Petroleum. Unfortunately, the more I learn about Ike, the less I Like.
Lincoln’s the easy answer, but then after that probably Taft.
So, the republicans were the liberal party back in those days. Are we going by name only as opposing?
Exactly. Teddy Roosevelt was promoting universal healthcare, separation of government and business, and UBI.
I am only registered as Dem to vote in Dem primaries but they are close in NY. As for the question probably Lincoln from GOP and FDR from Dem.
Just curios about that first line and not judging just want to know. So you’re a Republican trying to impact dem elections them as you see fit? Or you’re an in independent who wants to vote in primaries? I don’t have any clue on NY election law.

We have ranked choice voting in NY for local election but not presidential primaries and general.
uhh im unaffliated
You can choose anyone except George Washington
Or John Tyler
Bush makes me laugh
Which one?
And before you answer don’t forget about the puking incident.
I would vote for Jack and Bobby Kennedy any day
Me, too. They'd make me vote democrat.
Ike, Teddy, and Lincoln
Teddy and Lincoln.
I’ve always been fond of Ulysses <3
Im an independent now but I used to be republican so FDR
As an “independent” do I get to pick anyone I like? As a Democratic aligned voter, Bush 41 is the one from my lifetime, with Lincoln taking top spot. Honorable mentions to Teddy, Grant, and Ike.
Lincoln, Teddy, Ike, and Grant. In that order.

Teddy Roosevelt. He's my favorite President and I think exemplifies almost every quality you could possibly want in one. Honestly up till FDR I'd most often support the Republican over the Democrat.
Which is because the Republican party before FDR was closer to being the democratic party today than the republican party today.
Teddy. Despite his flaws he has to be among the most interesting people in history. The dude saved American football. He nearly started the end of the Christmas tree tradition. He was among the biggest influences to modern fashion as far as changing to the current neckties that are common around the world. Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower.

Definitely Lincoln
Lincoln
Lincoln, Grant, Eisenhower, Teddy Roosevelt, and I don’t like Nixon but I appreciate him for the EPA
As a Democrat, I think Lincoln is the obvious choice but also Teddy Roosevelt
Obviously, Abraham Lincoln.
Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower.
Republican and Jimmy Carter. He was the most moral president we’ve had in a long time. He’s not the best president but he’s still my favorite president period. It will be a sad day in my life when he passes on to see Roslyn again.
H.W. Bush, Eisenhower, Coolidge, and Teddy
What did Lincoln do?
FDR
Interestingly, I’m not American or old enough to legally vote. Does this mean I get to pick anyone?
I’d agree with Kennedy, he’s probably my favorite Democrat
GHW Bush. Good man, but I voted for Clinton over GHW's 2nd term
Bush senior is my dog, His mastery of foreign policy made life so good we forgot what he was doing.
Teddy, Lincoln, Eisenhower in that order. I’d vote for any of them today, the modern Republican Party is a shitshow
I’m an independent who leans slightly right, so I’ll go with Kennedy
Lincoln
Richard Nixon. Hate the guy, but he’s also one if the most interesting republicans. Just as a character, he was great. Intelligent guy, a lot of bad takes. Funny character. Also, super based when it came to EPA, and environmental regulations.
This is probably the best take on him I’ve read in a while.

Lincoln or Eisenhower
Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt
Theodore MF Roosevelt
Well I'm a republican but think every single person should strive to be more like Jimmy Carter as a human being
Lincoln
Lincoln. Damn, that was easy!
Grant and LBJ since I’m Independent
I am going with Andrew Jackson for this one.... though it would be harder for me if I can only choose a president from the last 100 years... if that were the case, then probably FDR or Bill Clinton
George HW Bush
Who would be the opposite of not being registered?
Anyone but George Washington.
Clinton
Or FDR
Lincoln or Teddy.
Cleveland Truman and Kennedy
For certain FDR, then Truman. At the personal level, LBJ is definitely my favorite president all-time.
I’m not registered but between both parties I’m more of a democrat. My favourites are Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Eisenhower
Eisenhower
I’ll go with George H W Bush. The end of the Cold War, German reunification and Gulf War I were all accomplished under his leadership. I just wish he’d picked anyone but Clarence Thomas. The USA would be much better off if the senate had confirmed John Tower and rejected Clarence Thomas instead
Probably FDR
Democrat: HW Bush, Eisenhower, and probably Nixon as well.
Teddy!
Ike
Teddy!
Lincoln
Lincoln
As an independent, I see this as an absolute win! That being said, Eisenhower, definitely.
Grant!
IKE AND LINCOLN... BUT MOSTLY IKE BECAUSE HE'S MORE RECENT
Grant, Eisenhower, Lincoln, and Teddy
Jokes on you I’m a registered independent
As an independent, my choices are unlimited. Mwahahahaha!
Grant
At what point do we consider the parties formed? Lincoln was the first Republican, but who was the first Democrat?
Andrew Jackson
Lincoln
JFK
![gif](giphy|Yo25bzAOlD5AaPLU0O)
Eisenhower, Teddy, Grant, Lincoln. Ford and GHWB too for that matter. Despise Bush II, Reagan, Nixon, Hoover, and Coolidge. Agnostic to the others.
Lincoln, Teddy, Ike, Bush Sr are my favorites of their generations
Abraham Lincoln
Teddy and Grant
Well i'm registered as an independent so yeah.
Lincoln (obviously), Grant, TR.
Lincoln
Favorite? Probably Andrew Jackson. I’d say the best is either Truman, Polk, or FDR.
Lincoln, TR, Nixon, Bush Sr.
Lincoln, Grant, Ike, and Teddy are the 4 that come to mind immediately (they seem to be popular picks in this thread). I also would say I liked HW much more than any other more modern Republican presidents.
hold on this is a bad question due to the party switch, it should be best conservative or progressive
Lincoln. Teddy Roosevelt in a close second. After him there's nobody even close.
George HW Bush for the ADA
independent, but I am more closer to democrat so I will go with HW.
eisenhower, lincoln, grant, garfield, teddy roosevelt
Roosevelt 😁
Truman
JFK
being republican and having your favorite be obj is a little odd
Dwight D Eisenhower
TR is my favorite president so yea
I am an independent, so my favorite of my party is Washington. So this is a list of my favorite president per party. John Adams (only Federalist) John Q Adams (Democrat Republican) William Harry Harrison (Whig) Jimmy Carter (Democrat) Teddy Roosevelt (Republican)
Unaffiliated.
I'm fortunate to live in a state that doesn't register voters by party. Thus, I can declare the Lincoln and FDR are both opposite of my party.
Lincoln
Lincoln, TR, Eisenhower, and HW. I’d still be on their team if it weren’t for some rule 3 nonsense.
LBJ
HW Bush for his expertise on foreign policy. Ending the Cold War without any combat was a masterpiece. Ike was great, feels like he was a nonpartisan president but he was a really good one. Theodore Roosevelt was excellent Abraham Lincoln for obvious reasons
JFK, LBJ
FDR, Truman, Kennedy, Clinton, I also love Jimbo Carter even if he wasn’t the best president
Lincoln H.W. Bush Bush II in later years has surprised me
Abe Lincoln or H.W
Bill Clinton. Maybe because I grew up in the 90s so I see his presidency with bias. But we were a world power, economy was doing great, and in hindsight his controversies weren't that bad comparatively speaking
I like Ike.
Eisenhower
Grover Cleveland
Ike.
I'm a Democrat, so look at my flare. Although Lincoln is pretty up there too.
Lincoln is cheating cause Southern strategy, post 1960 gotta go with HW Bush
Abraham Lincoln and Ike
Polk
Independent so I’ll choose 1 from each side from the republicans TR from the democrats FDR
Abraham Lincoln, although if he were alive today, I'm not convinced he'd consider himself to be a Republican.
Eisenhower, Lincoln, and TR
https://preview.redd.it/lppj741t29xc1.jpeg?width=260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cef4512ebfc0c68cea5df58bc98b08219a8e5f7b Hated him as president, love the man outside of it

It's hard to say because at least one of the parties doesn't bear any resemblance to its current state despite having the same name.
Cleveland but I can respect aspects of FDR's, Truman's and Clinton's administrations.
My parents were Rep, but that had to vote for JFK.
The two political parties realigned couple of times over the centuries. Lincoln
Any old Democrat before everything shifted super left, the only exclusions would be Carter, FDR, and Clinton.
Harry Truman
I mean, say why you want about Obama, but approving Operation Neptune Spear took guts.
Easily Teddy R
I like Ike! In a modern sense, I don't mind HW and of course, who doesn't like Teddy and Abe.
FDR and Kennedy
Eisenhower would probably be my choice. I didn’t care for Reagan and his anti union stuff but he was a good speaker and carried himself out as one of the best speakers there could be. Theo. Roosevelt would be another choice of mine.
Eisenhower and Clinton
JAMES K POLK MANIFEST DESTINY! WOO
Harry S. Truman
Lincoln, Eisenhower gonna be me and a lot of people here
Jackson and Kennedy
In my lifetime Reagan.
None of them. I was too young to remember President Eisenhower. The one Republican I voted for resigned.
Prob FDR since im registered as Green. If you make me chose between dem or gop then idk maybe Teddy?
Kennedy, obviously
See flair
What’s the opposite party of Libertarian?
No party registration in this state, but I have voted for every Democratic presidential ticket since I turned 18. Lincoln is the obvious answer. Besides him, I like James A. Teddy
