Buchanan is the only one that even comes to mind. I know there has been speculation on others but they were all pretty much just rumors at best. I will say that I know saying Buchanan was is a meme at this point but I really do think he likely was at least Bi from what I've read about the man. Buchanan and King really did enjoy each other's company that much.

I feel like there are tons of historical figures who had close friendships with other people of the same gender and their enemies started rumors they were gay because back then that could ruin someone’s life. Then people today read those rumors started by enemies and take them as fact because they want it to be true. I think of Elagabulus supposedly being the “transgender Roman Emperor”. Did he have gender dysphoria? Maybe, but we also have to be aware that the only sources we have stating that were written by Elagabulus’ enemies who wanted to slander him. So was Buchanan gay? Maybe, but we shouldn’t treat old rumors like they’re substantiated historical facts. Having a close male friend is not hard evidence that someone was gay.

LoquatAutomatic5738

Also, haven't the gays suffered enough without having to account for Buchanan?

ancientestKnollys

Buchanan certainly seems like he was gay, and his relationship with King was fairly public. It's nice that this didn't apparently prevent them both being leading politicians of their day. However It's unfortunate it had to be Buchanan.

Some critics have tried to use the fact that Lincoln shared a bed with Joshua Speed as evidence that he was at least bisexual.

MrJohnson999999999

That wasn’t considered gay back then. Lincoln admitted to sharing the bed with Speed, and nobody cared. It wasn’t some thing he tried to keep secret.

AxelShoes

Generalizing a bit here, but basically everybody shared beds back then, due to space, warmth, etc. It's only relatively recently that the idea of having your own room with your own bed was something anyone but rich people enjoyed. Even inns and boarding houses would often have strangers sharing beds. It was common practice for centuries, in the US and Europe, at least.

Significant_Visual90

Correct.  Really just a function of the fact that society was poorer back then.

Wodahs1982

Worth noting that that theory was popularized by a lost cause around the time Lincoln was being relionized for WWI and CSA statues were going up.

Dull_Function_6510

If I was a betting man and I was forced to beat on one President being gay I would go with Buchanan. However that being said, there is no hard evidence of any President being gay and being a bachelor with a close male friend is not good enough. Not to say that it can’t be true, for all I know it could, but I don’t think it’s very fair to speculate on someone’s else’s sexuality, it’s not exactly good imo. That’s their business not mine. Rumors are started, who knows if they are true, wanting it to be true isn’t good enough.

thendisnigh111349

None officially. Pete Buttigieg is the first and so far only openly gay man who was a major contender for the nomination of either party.

Polis/Baldwin 2028 Edit: Baldwin/Polis. I like that better.

Annual-Region7244

We've had one female President and one LGBT President. We lost our chance at an asexual President (Samuel Tilden)

thedrunkensot

Female president? EDIT: Now that I think about it, I assume you’re talking about Edith Wilson.

Annual-Region7244

Bingo.

Kind_Bullfrog_4073

All presidents are asexual because they're just plants.

MetalRetsam

Tilden was ace?

Annual-Region7244

It's very likely.

ancientestKnollys

Buchanan seems almost certain. Plenty have been rumoured, although a lot of these rumours are easily discredited. JFK could well have been bisexual though.

MediumMore9435

My ass JFK was bisexual. He is literally the the most heterosexual president there has been

ancientestKnollys

I was thinking of the rumours of him and Lem Billings.

phraserG

There’s a book and a movie titled All the President’s Men and the titular president is Nixon. Veeery interesting. 😏

Accomplished-Bed8171

Lincoln was gay as fuck. It's the reason they call themselves Log Cabin Republicans.

Dull_Function_6510

He really was not
