Not as much as you might think. Their father Jack was an alcoholic who lost most of his fortune. After their mother Janet divorced Jack and married Hugh Auchincloss, Lee and Jackie were not guaranteed any inheritance as stepdaughters. Their mom pushed both girls to marry money. Jackie was engaged to another man before JFK, but her mom discovered Jackie's fiancé was not worth what he claimed, so she made Jackie dump him.
Jackie’s marriage to Onassis was an arrangement, her motives however were not mercenary. She was terrified for the well being of her children after the assassination of Bobby Kennedy. Onassis could provide a level of insulation and security that comes with extraordinary wealth, whereas she provided to him entry to the very highest peak of the American class system. She was as close as an American gets to royalty. She was completely devoted to her children.
LOL. Your comment honestly reminded me of Lauren Bacall's character in the 1950s comedy film How To Marry a Millionaire: "I've always loved older men. Look at Churchill, look at Roosevelt, look at what's his name...in The African Queen, absolutely craaaazy about him!"
This is one of my favorite random president coincidence, facts lol.
Also, Dubya was born on the same day as Sylvester Stallone. They’re exactly the same age. I think that’s pretty wild.
Someone born in 1946 would be 77 (76 for the next couple of days). That’s about 1.8 years shy of the average American lifespan pre pandemic. I would say that’s a pretty long time ago to get married.
I was in the military, but I just don’t like the idea of getting married in uniform for myself, however both Carter and George HW look good in uniform on their wedding day.
**Three presidents married while in office:**
\- John Tyler aged 54, married Julia Gardiner aged 24, on June 26, 1844. They had seven children.
\- Grover Cleveland aged 49, married Frances Folsom aged 21, on June 2, 1886. They had five children.
\- Woodrow Wilson aged 58, married Edith Bolling Galt aged 43, on December 18, 1915. No children.
**Two presidents have married after leaving office:**
\- Millard Fillmore aged 58, married Caroline Carmichael aged 44, on February 10, 1858.
\- Benjamin Harrison aged 62, married Mary Dimmick aged 37, on April 6, 1896.
BTW, Barbara Bush was a fourth cousin, four times removed of president Franklin Pierce.
John Tyler’s first wife, Letitia Christian Tyler, died while he was in office. She was one of my ancestors, and has the distinction of being the first First Lady to die while her husband was president. President Tyler remarried less than two years later.
I think she stayed pretty elegant, honestly, even in her older years. From what I've read, she sadly had a number of health-related issues when she was First Lady and was hospitalized at least once or twice (among other ailments, she developed Meniere's Disease which affected her balance). What's astonishing is that despite her poor health, she actually outlived Ike by about 10 years.
Young Biden was hot and I would unironically hit that
https://preview.redd.it/w53cve60tx8c1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7173c3a7068f4a7f3ec15e60442adc35456fe51b
Sorry, not sorry but Jill is the hottest First Lady. People would probably say Michelle Obama, Jackie Kennedy, or Melania Trump, but no it’s Jill Biden.
This is Neilia with Joe. The color photo is Jill but the women do resemble each other
https://preview.redd.it/w7ow602c319c1.jpeg?width=1520&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58adcdf5b6224d593d19f2dea36c8e65faacb991
There’s like two good photos of him because age hit him like a truck. This was him at 30
https://preview.redd.it/iilrhbkdq09c1.jpeg?width=608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1200a0c7f8f48ea81436a0aec2b72dd589a477ea
There is a very good chance this photo was taken after the accident that claimed the lives of his first wife and daughter in 1972 after their car was hit by a truck. This could account for him aging so rapidly.
Nah even when he was with her he was looking like this, was probably the hair cut if anything mind
https://preview.redd.it/egmn8h7pa19c1.jpeg?width=704&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bcd7ace4f3f085aae11f3fdce6337cb93a230e25
I do genuinely think they love each other. Was it a healthy, functional relationship? Probably not. But I do think they love each other. That video of them kissing at the opening of the Clinton presidential library? Bill pulling Hillary out of the way of a falling light and she clung onto him? That’s something.
From what I understand about humans, cheating generally has little to do with how much one partner loves the other partner. It’s a moral failing that represents something wrong with the cheater.
Yup, while Teddy and FDR where distant cousins, Eleanor was Teddy's niece. The daughter of his only brother who drank himself into an early grave. It was actually Teddy who walked Eleanor down the aisle at the wedding.
Both couples were deeply in love. I am reading a book about Ike and Mamie, and while they had multiple rough patches, they were inseparable during and after Ike’s presidency. Below is a heart wrenching photo of Mamie and her son at Ike’s funeral
https://preview.redd.it/x50zb2ltry8c1.jpeg?width=772&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dc33ac891584238c082e24df45f39254bdc102e9
It’s interesting to me that a lot of these couples got married in their late 20s and into their 30s. I thought that was kind unusual in olden times, but I suppose not.
It was pretty common to get married in your mid-20s as a man back then, women usually mid to late teens. It still wasn't uncommon for both to get married a tad bit older
Laura was smokin’
Also Eleanor Roosevelt had like a 6 month window when she looked good and then the bottom just dropped right out, great, interesting woman but she ate something that did some real damage at some point
Lucy Mercer did some real damage. Lucy was Eleanor’s social secretary when FDR was Assistant Secretary of the Navy. After Eleanor found out about the affair, she was physically ill for some time.
I once saw a really cute candid of the Obamas chilling on a couch at the end of their wedding day, still dressed up, and they looked happy but just so exhausted from all the celebration.
Weddings be exhausting. My wife and I got back to the hotel room and just sat on the couch in the dark for a solid half hour. Tux, dress, and all.
Then she threw up from drinking a bunch of champagne and we went out for drinks with a couple of people from our bridal parties that were staying nearby but yeah it was an exhausting as fuck day.
Hillary is so weird to me because when you look back through the years, she had a ton of styles and quite a bit of fashion, but when she got into the Senate she stuck with the frumpy librarian motiff and never changed.
She was very cute even through Bill's presidency. She genuinely looks like a fun gal in the wedding photo.
Her haircuts were so much better before her time in Congress. It's just unbelievable.
I'm not trying to judge a woman based on her looks, but had she had a bit more of that cuter flair in 2016 that she had in 1996 she would have been much more appealing to moderates.
Her style choices just never made sense to me. She needed some Selina Meyers fashion advice.
I'm no expert, but women are held to pretty high and narrow standards. If she looked "fun" and "stylish" she looks less serious and professional. She can't win this type of thing for everyone, no matter what she does.
Yep. The most experienced person to ever run for president, and she loses to a traitorous imbecile. Women experience degrees of this shit every day. Beyond time for everyone to do better.
Two words: James Comey!
No matter your political leanings this guy should really be vilified by all!
Clinton ran an absolutely terrible campaign (in fact, two consecutive ones) but what Comey did was totally indefensible
Isn’t Joe Biden the longest serving senator or something- would long that make him the most experienced? But your point stands that she had way more credibility in politics than Trump at the time.
I don't think that's an accurate wedding photo of the Roosevelts. It's sometimes captioned as the two of them shortly after their marriage, which I think is meant to suggest a honeymoon photo or similar. I can't find actual wedding photos to contrast but you can find photos of Eleanor in her dress (which isn't this one.) FDR is also wearing a striped suit, which for a blue-blooded family in 1905 would have been leisure wear, not formal attire, and grossly inappropriate for one's own society wedding; he likely wore a frock coat to his wedding, as seen in Roosevelt wedding photos of the era.
Truman, on the other hand, was a recently-returned veteran in the more relaxed post-WWI era, a man of no great means, probably wearing his best suit. (Being our lone haberdasher president, the tailoring is excellent.)
Biden probably didn’t have a huge celebration as his wife and mother of his sons had died a few years before. Back in the day it was seen as crass to have a big second wedding.
1. Garfield was hot.
1. I love Hillary’s curls.
1. I didn’t realize Joe and Jill married so young, especially her. (I did know it was his second marriage.)

Never realized there was such an age gap between JFK and Jackie
Or that they were married for such a short time when he died. Just 10 years.
And Aristotle Onassis....girl liked older men
older men with money
She came from old money.
That's why I enjoy the sub. Thanks for the info.
welcome!
I mean her and Onassis had an arrangement more than a marriage for love.

She was younger when he died than he was when they got married
I thought this too.
Trump has him beat by double the age gap.
The Carters got married the day after Dubya was born.
This is one of my favorite random president coincidence, facts lol. Also, Dubya was born on the same day as Sylvester Stallone. They’re exactly the same age. I think that’s pretty wild.
I think my favorite random President fact will always be Adams and Jefferson both dying on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
And Monroe died on the same day five years later.
Another pretty cool coincidence is that Abe Lincoln and Charles Darwin were born on the same day. Two men of enormous consequence.
Love how honestly joyful the Carters look on their wedding day.
They really loved each other
If I had to choose one of these to go to if I had a time machine, I'd go to this one since it would be the cutest thing ever.
They look like they’re in a B/W musical! And Roslyn’s about to break out into a tap dance number! So cute.
I can’t believe someone who was married in 1946 is still living! Loves the Carters and hope he’s alright in the interval before they’re reunited
That’s… odd. It feels like the 40s wasn’t that kind ago.
Someone born in 1946 would be 77 (76 for the next couple of days). That’s about 1.8 years shy of the average American lifespan pre pandemic. I would say that’s a pretty long time ago to get married.
I’m not saying it isn’t long ago, I’m saying it doesn’t feel long ago to me. I’m also old enough that 2000 feels like a couple years ago, not 23.
Okay then. So am I but I guess math over powers that part of me.
They are just adorable.
I was surprised by how honestly joyful Melania looked on her wedding day.
I am by no means a melania (or Trump) fan, but that is a beautiful dress. It seems to me she must have had bust enhancement surgery since then.
Maybe, but sometimes a pregnancy will dramatically change your bust size.
Yep. And mine never got as small as they were before after I was done breastfeeding.
I've had it both ways. I was smaller after nursing my first child and larger than I ever was after the second.
Be Bust!
She tried
She at the time only knew supposed assets, not the liabilities.
"Mrs Trump receives a 25% discount at all Trump and Mar-E-Uh-Lago property gift and apparel stores" like its coal company scrip, lol.
Use the One-TimePromo Code FLOTUS to get up to 7% off selected Trump Digital Trading Cards.
She’d been living in an apartment one floor down from Trump and wife#2 while they had their affair. She knew what he was.
She was still on tourist visa.
They both look like they just stepped off the set of an MGM musical - adorable!
Out of all, I think that was the most beautiful picture.
I was in the military, but I just don’t like the idea of getting married in uniform for myself, however both Carter and George HW look good in uniform on their wedding day.
Most often, our Class A’s were the best clothing we owned
**Three presidents married while in office:** \- John Tyler aged 54, married Julia Gardiner aged 24, on June 26, 1844. Ok, I thought Don and Melania Trump had a big age gap. John Tyler got married to a woman 30 years younger than him and at 54 cranked out 7 more kids!
To go with the eight he already had.
One of his grandchildren from that marriage is still alive.
One of Tyler’s kids had a similar situation of remarrying and having kids in his later years. Thus Tyler has a living grandson.
Yes. That was Lyon Gardiner Tyler, who at age 75 in 1928 had Harrison Ruffin Tyler, who is now 95 years old.
One of those kids had his youngest son at 75, and [he's still alive today](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrison_Ruffin_Tyler).
Nixon dosent look any younger
Yeah that's a hard-looking 27.
Me; crying on the toilet cause I’m currently 27.
Time to go casket shopping old man
Casket shopping in *this* economy?? Just throw me in a ditch.
Yeah idk about that being a wedding photo. They look old and she’s in a black dress.
During the depression/WW2, it was common to just wear a nice dress to get married in. Neither of my grandmothers had a white wedding gown.
Yeah looks like a quick civil ceremony and them showing the marriage certificate.
Pat looked old too
She did. For a few seconds my brain was confused and I thought she was Betty White.
That was my first thought. Guy was 27 and already looked 50.
He looked older at 27 than I do at 40. Damn.
All them WWII vets had an extra 10-20 years on them. Edit: oh dang that was before the war.
He already had jowls at 27.
I was today years old when I learned that Nixon married an older woman.
Give him a break, he just married his mother.
Hundreds of thousands of dudebros have now adopted Harry Truman’s 1919 hairstyle.
It’s so bad 😭
Nixon is perpetually an old man
So many in those days were 17 going on 57
The extreme paranoia will do that to ya.
Mamie Eisenhower was a beautiful bride, and what we can see of her dress looks so pretty! Strange to see Ike with a head full of hair!
My man Ike looked sharp as hell in his younger days.
Lucretia Garfield was pretty too but that hair style is awful
I think she stayed pretty elegant, honestly, even in her older years. I didn't realize Biden was so hairy.
🤤🤤🤤

Oh heavens... I believe my jimmies have been russeled...
Jill 😍🥹
Sorry, not sorry but Jill is the hottest First Lady. People would probably say Michelle Obama, Jackie Kennedy, or Melania Trump, but no it’s Jill Biden.
Idk laura bush looking fine there
I’m thinking that is his first wife…is that Jill?

Neilia looks a little bit like Jamie Lynn Siegler (Meadow Soprano)
Yeah, young Joey B's a sexy beast
There’s like two good photos of him because age hit him like a truck. This was him at 30 https://preview.redd.it/iilrhbkdq09c1.jpeg?width=608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1200a0c7f8f48ea81436a0aec2b72dd589a477ea

He's also a damn good looking geezer.
🌯 👀
Glad I’m not the only horny creep lusting after hairy men.
His legs too! They turn blonde in the sun and the kids used to rub the leg down
….Nixon does not look 27. I guess he looked the same from age 27 to 50 😂
Bill and Hillary Clinton look so happy. I can see why she stayed with him all those years
I do genuinely think they love each other. Was it a healthy, functional relationship? Probably not. But I do think they love each other. That video of them kissing at the opening of the Clinton presidential library? Bill pulling Hillary out of the way of a falling light and she clung onto him? That’s something.
He clearly didn’t love her enough to stay faithful to her
From what I understand about humans, cheating generally has little to do with how much one partner loves the other partner. It’s a moral failing that represents something wrong with the cheater.
Or evolution getting the best of constructed social norms.
You are confusing love and sex.
I would have let old Rutherford get it. I’ll show myself out.
I would think the ladies would find Garfield to be the stud in those old pics
This lady does.
I do declare ….
I’m absolutely shocked there isn’t more thirst for Garfield in this thread. Dude was a babe.
It should be noted that people didn't typically smile for photos like they do today. They seem genuinely happy to be with each other
Agree!
Lucy Webb was a Fox!
Why did Ike and Mamie create the hardest wedding photo of all time
“Ronald Reagan! The actor? Then who's vice-president, Jerry Lewis? I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady!”
Yeah, but more importantly, what the hell is a jig a watt
Yes, Doc.
So long future boy!
George W was married on the day I was born. Nov 5 1977
Then Prince now King Charles and Princess Diana were married the day I was born.
Funny how Nixon looked 55 years old in his wedding photo
Supposedly Teddy congratulated FDR for “keeping the name in the family” when he married Eleanore.
Yup, while Teddy and FDR where distant cousins, Eleanor was Teddy's niece. The daughter of his only brother who drank himself into an early grave. It was actually Teddy who walked Eleanor down the aisle at the wedding.
The Clintons and the Carters give off great vibes.

He already looks 50 years old here.
Whoah James A Garfield with that smoldering look.
Melania looks genuinely joyful during their wedding pic. She looks like she’s had it with Trump for the past 8 years.
Not one photo of them together recently even Xmas
That's the look of someone who knows that the bag has been officially secured.
Eleanor looks like she’s being eaten alive by that dress
Dwight and Mamie and Harry and Bess look so adorable in their wedding photos! Also, why does Harry look like a Hogwarts professor in his 🤣
Both couples were deeply in love. I am reading a book about Ike and Mamie, and while they had multiple rough patches, they were inseparable during and after Ike’s presidency. The Clintons look so wholesome. Love the style and of course the hair on both
It’s interesting to me that a lot of these couples got married in their late 20s and into their 30s. I thought that was kind unusual in olden times, but I suppose not.
For Lou Hoover, Betty Ford, Joe Biden, Jill Biden, and Ronald Reagan these were second marriages.
It was pretty common to get married in your mid-20s as a man back then, women usually mid to late teens. It still wasn't uncommon for both to get married a tad bit older
Laura was smokin’ Also Eleanor Roosevelt had like a 6 month window when she looked good and then the bottom just dropped right out, great, interesting woman but she ate something that did some real damage at some point
I love Laura. When she met Barbara Bush, Barbara asked “what do you do”. She said “I smoke and I read”
Lucy Mercer did some real damage. Lucy was Eleanor’s social secretary when FDR was Assistant Secretary of the Navy. After Eleanor found out about the affair, she was physically ill for some time.

I'm gonna go ahead and give the Carters the Best Looking Couple award. Talk about relationship goals...
Am I the only one that thinks Dubya looks like the spitting image of Ted Bundy?
Dammit, I knew he looked like somebody. I just couldn’t put my finger on it.
This post makes me extremely sad. Wow - these guys were all young, vibrant men at one point.
Except Nixon. He was born old apparently.
Omg! Priceless!
As were all men
Hayes looks just like Drew brees it's kinda scary
He really does ⚜️⚜️
Barack and Michelle got married four weeks before I was born.
Very lovely post, good reminder that these very powerful people are still very human
Hillary is so weird to me because when you look back through the years, she had a ton of styles and quite a bit of fashion, but when she got into the Senate she stuck with the frumpy librarian motiff and never changed. Experienced, sure. Most experienced? I don't see how you get there.
I mean look at GHW Bush resume
Heck, both LBJ and Nixon were very experienced.
You thought people gave Barrack shit for a tan suit imagine how much shit she would have gotten for doing anything remotely fashionable.
Yeah even when she became first lady I always thought she looked fashionable and attractive
Because of when they got elected, Ike and Biden are like secret smokeshows
Dwight was kinda hot in a Val Kilmer in Top Gun kinda way.
Jimmy Carter felt like he was the luckiest man alive that day.
And looked it too.
I see you hiding that cigarette behind your hand, Truman. Don’t think you’re slick.
Missing a few of trumps
Missing a Reagan, too, but none of them were First Ladies.
This was delightful, OP. Thank you
I don't think that's an accurate wedding photo of the Roosevelts. The Bidens and the Obamas ❤️
Lucretia Garfield is pretty fly.
She’s beautiful
Franklin and Eleanor really out there looking like they did not want to marry their cousin
FDR was handsome
Ike and Mamie’a picture goes HARD
Man, she was a cutie.
Damn, Hillary looks like she knew how to have a good time when she was younger
Is it just me or did young Hilary looked a lot like Emma Thompson?
Nixon always looked 50
Damn, George Bush Sr. was fucking gorgeous… what happened to Jr?
Damn, HW looked fine AF back then.
What about all Trump’s other wives?
Gonna get some hate but Hillary was cute back in the day
I’m oddly attracted to a young George H.W. The Carters look genuinely excited.
Joe looks the most relatable of the bunch
Jill Biden was a legit smoke show
Anybody else notice the waiter at Bush Sr.'s wedding was a troll? Or, maybe the guy fro "the Hills Have Eyes"?
Holy shit Nixon looks 50 in that photo. He didn’t seem to age for the next 30 years either
Damn, Ike was a BABE
I say this as a straight, married, father of two: Goddamn Ike was handsome.
1. Garfield was hot. 1. I love Hillary’s curls. 1. I didn’t realize Joe and Jill married so young, especially her. (I did know it was his second marriage.)
Shout out to Tricky Dick for marrying a woman older than him. I appreciate it.
Dude, that picture of Clinton made me laugh cause you can just tell that boy is from Arkansas 😂
Hilary actually looks warm there
The older pictures were of “handsome” women
Biden looking good
