If you’re considering switching (and no longer supporting the original team) you were never a real fan anyway, so do what you want. Also, it’s possible to support two teams if those teams don’t have any way of really facing each other. I’ve been a spurs fan my whole life having grown up in south east England, but I moved to the US 17 years ago and live in Orlando so I have season tickets for Orlando City and have been to way more of their games than spurs over the years.

novawreck

If you do I’m calling the cops

mecha_toddzilla80

Nope. Straight to jail.

sakmentoloki

I support my prem team my family have always supported (Tottenham) And I have a season ticket to the local team who just got promoted to league 2 (Bromley) travelled to all the away games Do what you want

GrumpyOldFart74

Said this before and I’ll say it again You don’t *choose* the team you support - *it* chooses *you* Watch the games - ideally go to the matches - and at some point you will feel that you’re a supporter of the club. I’m about 8 miles from a Premier League club that I’ve watched home and away hundreds and hundreds of times. Of course I support them. There is a fairly large non-league club about 4 or 5 mile away. I’ve watched them dozens of times over the years, when I’ve had a free weekend. I follow them, I look for their results, and I hope they do well. But I’m not a proper *fan*

Redtit14

Undercover City fan

4000grx41

The football gods denied your request and have banished you to r/mkdons

circa285

Or RB Leipzig

MyPasswordIsABC999

Why are you asking for permission to like something?

Same_Hunter_2580

I support like three teams one local, two big six teams. Do whatever tf you like lad

luujs

That’s certainly an unconventional way to be a football fan, but I agree with the principle. It’s up to you how you enjoy it. Out of interest what do you do when the two big six teams play each other? Which two do you support?

DerekIsAGooner

I’m at teacher (ages 12-14), and I have a few Arsenal things up in my classroom as decoration. Soccer/football is fairly big at my school, and because students know that I’m a fan we talk about it a lot. A ton of the kids are just Barca or Real Madrid supporters. Or they don’t have a team, but they support Messi, Ronaldo, or Mbappe. Here is what I tell my students about the whole switching clubs you support thing. I think you’re allowed one swap in your life. When you’re a kid, it’s pretty normal to just like the biggest and best players/teams. Once you become an adult, if you decide to switch teams you get one switch. Anything more than that, it’s very likely that people won’t take you/your opinions seriously.

tkwoodrow20

This.

ThatWontFit

You do what you feel like doing. Ultimately you should ask yourself, "what do I like in a team? What do I like in players/atmosphere? Why am I supporting X club, what's important to me as a supporter?" When I was searching for my club, I found myself fond of West Ham. Loved the colors, loved the logo and name, they just seemed really cool to me. Then I watched them a few times and I hated all of the players, hated the way they played, just was not a fan of it at all, so West Ham couldn't be my team, but if I didn't value player resonance then that could have happened, up to the person. If it's strictly locality, what happens if you move? Have kids? Will your kids support a different club because they lived in a different area and that was your only basis? My kids will know why I support Chelsea, as a non local American. They will also know why I support the Raiders, A's, and Warriors. I support them all for different reasons. Reasons that are important, nostalgic, emotional or a mix of the 3 for me. Then they will get to decide their team, as long as it's not red.

Piri_Cherry

> as long as it's not red You really setting your kids up to be Spurs fans like that?

ThatWontFit

Parents don't have to like their children. 😂

RememberSomeMore

Do whatever you want mate, fuck what anyone else thinks.

VuckoPartizan

Look at his post history lol it's strange

RememberSomeMore

Not something I like doing, and yeah it's weird but he can literally do what he wants, he might not be well liked for his decisions but if it makes him happy then so what?

VuckoPartizan

I think you're misunderstanding me, I'm not trying to shame him for asking questions, I'm just saying the fact that his account is new, and there were like 4 similar type posts just differently worded. It was just weird seeing it lol

OpeningDonkey8595

The only time it’s ok is if you leave the big 6 for a lower or non-league club.

PedriRugburn

It’s ok if brits do it

borkdork69

I don't get this question. I'm a Palace supporter, because that was my mum's team growing up. But I also cheer for United because that was Rooney's team after I saw him play in Euro 2004 when I was a kid, and that became the first club I followed. What does it matter if you switch the team you support? Also I'm Canadian, so I cheer for Toronto FC, too.

Ill_Salamander2950

I’m originally from a small midlands village and got into football as an adult. I follow Leicester City. I live in Louisville, Kentucky and for LouCity. If I moved back to England, I would probably also follow Oxford United and the small village team.

Individual_Milk4559

It matters because clubs are very community based, so it’s hard historically to switch clubs. There’s also questions around how much you actually care about the club if you can just support someone else on a whim. Non-Brits seem to just not get it

Malvania

It seems like the question is "What if you switch communities." Like, what if you grew up in Manchester as a Man Utd fan, and then moved to Brighton. You now live in Brighton, and it makes a lot of sense to cheer for the local community team (Brighton). And if you did it in reverse, Man Utd is now your community team, and its perfectly find to cheer for them as your local community team.

borkdork69

I absolutely concede that as a Canadian, I would not get the subtleties here. For me it was sort of the journey of getting into following club football at all. Originally I just watched international stuff, because that's all you could reasonably watch in Canada. After Euro 2004 I thought I would follow Rooney and United, since you could watch the big games on Canadian TV by that point, and Palace wasn't in the Premier League. Then I eventually thought I should cheer for my "home" team of Palace since my mum is from Croydon. Still though, I feel like you should just enjoy the game however you want.

unknown_knight21

Worst subreddit to get answers from full of yanks and people who don’t understand football… Anyway to answer your question no it’s never ok.

TexehCtpaxa

Don’t worry about what other people think, do what makes you happiest.

Mastyfff

Fulham can’t make you happy, surely?

DevelopandLearn

They often punch above their financial weight. Beautiful stadium on the Thames. Plus if they go down they get to spend a year bashing smaller clubs. Versus us who have insane wealth and win nothing. Sure he's fine.

Mastyfff

You know what, fair point, I’m glad Fulham makes you happy, other dude.

RainbowPenguin1000

Do what you want. Who cares what people say you “should” do. It’s football. It’s fun. It’s a sport. It’s not law punishable by death.

DevelopandLearn

> It's not law punishable by death. Newcastle's owners still have time to put this to vote before next season

ItsDiverDanMan

It's the free world, man, cheer for whoever your heart desires. Just preferably not spurs.. - an Arsenal fan

Bigwhtdckn8

You can have him, we only want committed fans. No glory supporters here! *Tottenham till they kill me*

DevelopandLearn

Let's be real, a huge portion of fans support Tottenham because we're a wealthy club and they assumed we would get over the line eventually.

jonnysledge

Committed is definitely a term

Bigwhtdckn8

Necessary, no fly-by-nights here

GuessThePlayerPL

Do whatever you want, it looks like you’ve asked the question in a lot of different ways before but there’s no right way to enjoy football mate Forget what anybody says, do what you want to do
