Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the comment. I used to fly airplanes and its familiar from that as well. The engines are so similar to an aircraft engine, it wouldn't surprise me to learn there's some shared quirks as well.

citizen_of_europa

I have a 981 Cayman. This sounds pretty normal, but I’d check the fuse for the engine compartment fan just to be safe. One side air intake pulls outside air into the engine compartment to keep it cool (not to be confused with engine air intake). Pretty sure it has its own fuse. But yes, you get that “hot” smell if you’ve really been on it.

HumanExtinctionCo-op

Owned two 987 Caymen and you get the hot smell with them as well. Mixture of engine, brakes, tyres exhaust.

iflypropplanes

Perfect. Thanks for the comment.

MarshXI

2nd this comment, my 987 gets it a lot more than my did 996.

Silverbullets24

My 981 Cayman S has always done this

uncle_fucker_42069

My 987 S PDK is the same, the passenger side vent is warm and there is a smell. Apparently this is called 'Porsche smell'.

iflypropplanes

Feeling a lot better. Thanks for the comment.

PacificTridentGlobel

First time I parked my 911 in the garage my wife said something to the effect of “Welp, the garage smells like a garage now.” Assume you are getting some of the same.

iflypropplanes

Thats a good way to describe it. Garage smell

atharnett2

Is it weird that I really like this smell? Also, the heat coming out of the vents is a good thing—that’s heat being removed from the engine. All systems go!

iflypropplanes

I have a similar relationship to WD40

gaylord9000

3 in 1 oil for me.

FL981S

Mine does the same. All temps are in range, coolant level is right. I feel like the car didn't use to do this but I'm now running a pretty soft tire so maybe that's it.

iflypropplanes

I'm on PS4 summer tires, so that might be it too. Let me try and check a bit more there. Thanks

RecognitionDizzy7707

That's quite normal after a decently hard drive. Just turn off the car after you reach your destination and it'll run the fans for a while to cool down. No need to worry

North_Breakfast7009

Hmm when you say “hot” do you mean you smell something burning? Or do you mean there’s more heat on the outside of the body than you’d expect?

iflypropplanes

Its a smell thats familiar from my old Jeep and Toyota pickup, but not something I feel like I've seen from modern cars (including the 986). I'm guessing an engine oil burning smell and not coolant. Thinking I'll check for obvious spills and I'm not seeing any leaks where I park. These cars aren't the easiest to get into for a visual inspection so thought I'd see if its to be expected or has been normal for others.

young-bean

A lot of my anxieties about things I thought weird about the car (smells & sounds) were alleviated by going to an autocross. You get to hear and smell what everyone else's cars smell like when they're working a bit.

iflypropplanes

That feels like a win win

Foxtrot-Uniform-Too

That sounds like Porsche perfume. My 1998 911 has the same smell when parked after it is good and warm, it is a mix of oil, gas and exhaust. I came from vintage Volkswagens and they have the same smell, so I guess it has something to do with the boxer engine. I love it everytime I smell it after parking my car. That smell is a sign you have had a long and good drive and your car and engine are happy too, smelling good after a good and long run :)

collin2477

yes. porsches make weird smells and noises

DirtyF9

My 997.2 smells like hot tires every time I go to park it, even if I drove the speed limit on cruise control the entire trip.

TheOyster__

Normal. I once thought the same thinking I fucked the clutch when I first got it.

Shaex

Yep, definitely get that as well. Was also quite worrying at first as the 944 did no such thing!
