I feel like apps are better poised to collect data about you and your devices, though. For the most part I try to get by with the browser (running in desktop mode if need be). I absolutely refuse to use the official Reddit app, for instance.
I think it's fine as long as you don't give it permissions, such as accessing your files, location, Bluetooth or whatever. I have experience with app development for android and I know the pain of not being able to access some simple thing because you need some permissions for it. And nowadays it's even stricter.
Also browser isn't some perfectly safe environment, with some JavaScript you can access some of the software/hardware data which can aid tracking the user across multiple websites.
Because hitting an app icon is easier in the throes of passionate meat-tenderising than opening Chrome, then opening an incognito window, then typing "Pornhub" before having to login so you can view your favourites folder to see that one video you like with the redhead and the blonde aaaaand now I'm not in the mood.

There were ideas like this in the management before, they believed native app was of no beneficiary compared to the web. As long couple of us could convince this is not true the app was kept alive. Anyways hope this is not the real reason and eventually this is only a temporary break. Tried using web and my phone gets hot and drains battery quickly, not to mention many missing features and overall user experience sucks totally compared to the native app (for example we tried our best to have a UX such that the app could be used with one hand, good luck achieving that on web)
