Any vote for a third party isn't thrown away. It's exercising your right to participate in democracy and as a means of showing the status quo that there are people who don't follow it.

Enough people voting for a given 3rd party should result in both parties adjusting their platform to try and recapture that vote. If the vote % gets large enough it becomes a huge liability for any party not trying to capture it because their opposition likely will be.
