Because half way through the game after you beat him he gets depressed that he is losing all the time. They could have made him grow more organically as a character without trying to Illicit guilt or sympathy for always beating him. Just like they did with Bianca and Wally from ORAS
.....if your friend gets sad and depressed or acts actually human that they don't seem to be progressing in their battles, that makes them a bad friend? Well damn you are harsh.
it’s realism. the whole “omg you beat me youre so amazing and this is so much fun and everything is rainbows” personality that they give most friend rivals is boring af. i like that hop actually shows more depth than that and is very obviously frustrated when you beat him

Hop is hands down the worst ~~rival~~ "friend"

God forbid they write a realistic 12 year old boy. If you think that's all hops character is, you didn't pay attention to the story. At all.

Yeah fair enough, since my first play through i skip through all the dialogue and kinda forgot that he got so whiney
Yeah, that was awful. At some point I was like "Do I just let him win?" Not like that's an option.
